American Airlines and its regional partners have \u2062flown approximately 976,000 flights during\u2062 the first two quarters of this year.<\/p>\n<h2>DOT Issues Largest\u200d Fine\u200c in Its History<\/h2>\n<p>The DOT issued\u200b this penalty as part of a consent\u2063 order, alleging that American Airlines violated its rule on \u200c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/american-airlines-fined-4-1-million-for-dozens-of-long-tarmac-delays-that-trapped-passengers\/\" title=\"American Airlines fined .1M for numerous tarmac delays, trapping passengers.\">tarmac delays<\/a> by keeping passengers onboard for over three hours. These rules have been in effect for over a decade.<\/p>\n<p>Out of the $4.1 million fine, American Airlines has already compensated passengers with over $2 million for these incidents, resulting in\u200b a credit for half of the fine. The remaining $2.05\u200c million will be paid to the government within the next 30\u200c days.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2064federal government hopes that this substantial fine will discourage\u2062 airlines from violating the law in the future.\u2063 Federal regulations state that passengers can \u200cbe \u200dheld on board for a \u200dmaximum of \u200dthree hours for domestic flights and four hours for international flights, with provisions for food and water within two hours of the \u200cdelay.<\/p>\n<p>American Airlines was accused of not following this \u2063rule on one \u2062of the \u200dflights, and none\u200b of \u2063the exceptions allowed \u200bfor bending the rules were applicable to any of the identified flights.<\/p>\n<p>Most of these delays occurred at Dallas-Fort \u2063Worth\u2063 International Airport, one of the largest transit hubs in the United States and the location of American\u2064 Airlines&#8217; headquarters.<\/p>\n<p>In one of the longest incidents, passengers\u200c were stuck on a plane at a Texas\u200c airport for six hours and three minutes in August\u200c 2020. The flight had been diverted due to severe weather.<\/p>\n<p>The DOT\u2064 alleged that \u201cAmerican lacked sufficient resources to appropriately handle several\u2064 of these \u2063flights once they landed.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Secretary \u2064Buttigieg\u200b Calls for More Regulations to Protect\u200d Passengers<\/h2>\n<p>Transportation Secretary\u2064 Pete Buttigieg stated, &#8220;This is\u200c the latest action in our continued drive to enforce the rights of airline passengers. \u200bWhether the issue is extreme tarmac delays\u2063 or \u2062problems getting refunds, DOT will continue to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/chinese-dissidents-petition-supreme-court-to-strike-down-donor-disclosure-law\/\" title=\"Chinese Dissidents Petition Supreme Court to Strike Down Donor Disclosure Law\">protect consumers<\/a> and hold\u2064 airlines accountable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, the DOT created an online dashboard\u200d to inform travelers of their \u200bentitlements if\u2062 flights are canceled or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/blackrock-invests-state-retirement-funds-in-chinese-firms-tied-to-uyghur-genocide\/\" title=\"Blackrock Invests State Retirement Funds in Chinese Firms Tied to Uyghur Genocide\">significantly delayed due<\/a> to reasons within an airline&#8217;s control. The DOT will also propose that\u2063 airlines and travel search \u200dwebsites disclose\u200b any surprise fees upfront and provide \u2064flight credits or vouchers if\u200c a flight to, from, or within the United States is\u200b canceled\u2064 or significantly changed.<\/p>\n<h2>American Airlines Protests Government Decision<\/h2>\n<p>American Airlines respectfully disagrees with the government&#8217;s decision, \u200cstating that &#8220;certain of these tarmac delays warrant\u200b enforcement action under the extreme circumstances presented.&#8221; The airline had previously been fined $1 million by the DOT for delays at Reagan Washington \u200dNational Airport \u200cduring\u200b a winter storm \u2062in January \u20642019.<\/p>\n<p>United Airlines was also fined $1.9 million in 2021 for similar incidents.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>American Airlines received the biggest fine in U.S. Department of Transportation history, amounting to $4.1 million.
