Ron DeSantis is now within the margin \u2064of error in a two-person race with Trump in\u200c Iowa, which will hold the first-in-the-nation caucuses.<\/p>\n<p>While Public Opinion Strategies is working for the\u200d DeSantis\u2019 campaign, it\u2019s worth noting that the pollster\u2019s numbers for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/cnn-analyst-runs-three-new-polls-warns-viewers-trump-real-shot-beating-biden-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump<\/a> were far better in a\u200c pre-debate survey, where the \u2064former president led on a two-way ballot 51 \u2064percent to 34 percent.<\/p>\n<p>In a post-debate matchup,\u200c he led DeSantis by 3 percentage points, 43 percent to 40 percent \u2014 within the survey\u2019s 4.9 percent margin of error. The poll was taken among 400 likely Republican caucus-goers on cell and landline phones.<\/p>\n<p>The governor \u200calso saw the\u200d largest leap in \u200chis favorability rating in pre-debate and post-debate numbers, jumping from 68 \u200bpercent favorability to 72 percent. South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott was the only other candidate to gain ground, with a \u2062net change of 1 percent\u2064 favorability.<\/p>\n<p>Trump, meanwhile, lost 9 points, going from 71 percent favorable and 27 percent unfavorable to 67 percent favorable and 23 percent unfavorable.<\/p>\n<p>The only candidate to do \u2063worse was former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who lost 14 points, proving that trying to replicate his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CkdpzRDxTXU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2016<\/a> Marco Rubio takedown on every candidate for an entire debate season isn\u2019t \u2062going to be a viable strategy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/biden-handed-brutal-news-rfk-jr-wont-able-compete-campaign-trail\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Iowa<\/a> is likely to be the first state in the nation to choose candidates in \u200dthe 2024\u200c race, although this is somewhat up in the air for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/post-debate-poll-shows-rival-within-margin-of-error-of-trump-in-head-to-head-matchup-in-key-race\/\" title=\"Post-debate poll reveals close race between Trump and rival in key matchup.\">supremely dumb technical reasons<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmoinesregister.com\/story\/news\/elections\/presidential\/caucus\/2023\/06\/01\/kim-reynolds-signs-in-person-iowa-caucus-requirement-as-2024-campaign-heats-up\/70203997007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Des Moines Register<\/a>,\u2062 Democrats have been trying to offer a mail-in version of the caucus for their contest \u2014 and \u2062if they do so, \u2064New Hampshire officials have said they would consider this a primary,\u2064 not a \u2062caucus.<\/p>\n<p>Since\u200b New Hampshire has a law stating it <em>must<\/em> hold the first primary in the nation, this means the Granite State could leapfrog Iowa \u2014 although Iowa Gov. \u200cKim Reynolds,\u200b a Republican, signed a law in June requiring the caucuses to be held in\u200d person. You will be responsible for knowing all \u200dof this \u200don the test.<\/p>\n<p>This\u200d minutia is important, however, because DeSantis has been campaigning hard in Iowa \u2014\u2063 including a recent appearance at the state\u2019s\u2064 famous \u201cField of Dreams\u201d\u200d cornfield baseball stadium, where, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ron-desantis-field-of-dreams-53fd6fcd32faff4d451f66dbff3b3679\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Associated \u2062Press<\/a>, the former Yale \u2064baseball player was hitting balls and throwing pitches \u2064while\u2064 former President Trump was undergoing his legal Sturm und Drang <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/reid-claims-justice-trump-actually-revenge-something-nearly-35-years-ago\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">down in\u2062 Georgia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Trump skipped the first debate, in part because\u2062 he accused host network Fox News of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-66599534\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bias against his campaign<\/a> in favor of DeSantis\u2019. In addition, he cited the fact that he was \u201cleading the field by\u2064 \u2018legendary\u2019 numbers\u201d in a post\u200c on \u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/110924112193729328\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Truth Social<\/a> as a\u200b reason for avoiding\u2062 the Milwaukee debate. Instead, he sat down for an interview with former Fox News host Tucker\u200d Carlson on the \u2063<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-new-acting-attorney-general-jeff-rosen-recently-wrote-an-essay-on-foreign-influence-in-us-elections-this-tells-us-a-little-about-his-knowledge-of-whats-going-on-today\/\" title=\"The New Acting Attorney General Jeff Rosen Recently Wrote an Essay on Foreign Influence in US Elections \u2013 This Tells Us A Little About His Knowledge of What\u2019s Going On Today\">social media platform<\/a> X.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/2024\/president\/us\/2024_republican_presidential_nomination-7548.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RealClearPolitics<\/a> polling \u200baggregate, Trump\u2019s numbers have dipped only \u2062slightly since the Wednesday debate, and the polls taken \u2063since then have him with leads\u2063 ranging\u200b from 27 to 52 points nationally.<\/p>\n<p>However, \u200cthe move to skip the debate didn\u2019t \u2062help\u2063 any: As <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/4174521-trump-drops-6-points-in-post-debate-gop-poll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Hill<\/a> noted, Trump\u200d was down 6 points in one of those polls,\u200c an Emerson survey that \u2062still found him taking home 50 percent of support. \u2064That\u2019s down from 56 percent in a pre-debate Emerson poll, \u200chowever, and the lowest numbers he\u2019s received thus far.<\/p>\n<p>And while DeSantis didn\u2019t exactly have a \u2063breakout performance \u2014 nobody seemed to,\u2064 in fact \u2014 the\u200c governor certainly didn\u2019t do\u200c badly.<\/p>\n<p>He managed to\u2062 get in one of the more memorable lines of the night, saying that we \u201cmust reverse Bidenomics so that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fncs-carlson-gamestop-saga-shows-system-is-not-the-capitalism-we-were-promised-not-even-close\/\" title=\"FNC's Carlson: GameStop Saga Shows System Is 'Not the Capitalism We Were Promised -- Not Even Close'\">middle-class families<\/a> have a chance to succeed again\u201d and that America \u201ccannot succeed as a country if you are working hard and you can\u2019t afford groceries, a car or a new home while Hunter \u200bBiden can make hundreds of thousands of dollars on lousy paintings.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Our country is in decline. \u2064This decline is not inevitable. It is a choice.<\/p>\n<p>We need to reverse\u200c American decline, and it starts with understanding that \u200dwe must reverse Bidenomics.<\/p>\n<p>As your president, I will \u200dget \u200bthe job done. To a certain extent, you saw how it could \u200dpay off, as the\u2064 most Trump-adjacent candidate \u2014 businessman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/speaking-time-totals-first-gop-debate-dont-line-polling-averages\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vivek Ramaswamy<\/a> \u2014\u2063 received most of the fire that would have otherwise been reserved for the front-runner.<\/p>\n<p>However, it also gave DeSantis and other candidates a chance to move out of the former president\u2019s\u2064 shadow. \u2062In this case,\u2063 it looks like it\u2019s paid off in Iowa, where the debate has\u200d given \u200cthe Florida governor\u2062 a major bump\u2063 if (and it\u2019s a big if, depending on how many candidates drop\u200c out and\/or \u2063become \u200dirrelevant) this becomes essentially \u200da two-man race.<\/p>\n<p>Trump \u2063doesn\u2019t have to win Iowa to maintain his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/desantis-rivals-seize-on-early-stumbles-as-campaign-gets-underway\/\" title=\"DeSantis' opponents capitalize on initial missteps during campaign start.\">front-runner status<\/a>, mind you; he lost\u2063 it \u2063in 2016 to Texas Sen.\u2064 Ted Cruz and still went on\u200d to take \u200dthe nomination\u200b in convincing \u2062fashion.<\/p>\n<p>However, a loss in Iowa to DeSantis would prove, at\u200c the very least, that \u200bthe former president isn\u2019t invincible \u2014\u200b and \u2062that would shake up the 2024 race in dramatic fashion, no matter how \u201clegendary\u201d the \u2062former president\u2019s polling lead remains.<\/p>\n<p>The post \u2063 <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/post-debate-poll-shows-rival-within-margin-error-trump-head-head-matchup-key-race\/\">Post-Debate Poll Shows Rival Within Margin of Error of Trump \u2063in Head-to-Head Matchup in \u200bKey Race<\/a> appeared first on <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\">The Western Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former President Donald Trump&#8217;s absence from the first GOP debate in the 2024 presidential race didn&#8217;t significantly impact his national lead.
