President Trump \u200dmay have an interest in\u2064 delaying it \u2064beyond the election, while his opponents would\u200d like to see \u200dhim sentenced\u2064 during election season. The date \u2064selected by the judge \u2062happens to be one day before the &#8220;Super Tuesday&#8221; slew of primary elections in 16 states.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Smith previously \u2064asked for a January\u200c 2024 trial \u2064date\u200b with jury selection as early as Dec. 11. The defense proposed\u2063 April 2026.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2064case appears to be exceptionally \u200bcomplex. As part\u2064 of the discovery process, the prosecutors are almost\u2062 done handing\u200c over \u200cto the\u2063 defense some 12.8 million\u2064 documents and files, federal prosecutor Molly Gaston said during the hearing.<\/p>\n<p>She noted that more\u2062 than\u2064 60 percent of the \u2064discovery\u2063 came from entities affiliated \u2064with the former president, the implication being that the defense doesn\u2019t need\u200d to review all the material because it might\u2063 have seen some of it previously.<\/p>\n<p>President Trump\u2019s lawyer John Lauro called \u2064such a \u200cline of \u2064reasoning \u201cridiculous,\u201d accusing the prosecutors of trying to turn the case \u200cinto a \u201cshow trial.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was \u2062\u201cabsurd,\u201d he said, for the prosecutors to suggest that he could review the discovery in just\u200d four months.<\/p>\n<p>The\u2063 judge retorted that the\u200c former \u200dpresident\u200d has resources available\u2062 that other defendants \u2064don\u2019t, but she didn\u2019t explain what resources or why he should be forced to \u200dexpend them if other defendants\u200d aren\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>She pointed out that lawyers would be reviewing available materials even before \u2062the charges were \u200bbrought.<\/p>\n<p>There will\u200c be a number\u200d of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-washington-trial-date-set-on-march-4-in-election-obstruction-case\/\" title=\"Trump's trial date for election obstruction case set on March 4 in Washington.\">pre-trial legal issues<\/a> \u200bthat \u2064will\u200d need\u2064 to be litigated, including subpoenas and some questions regarding Mr.\u200c Smith\u2019s novel use of criminal\u2062 law, Mr. Lauro said.<\/p>\n<div>\n<figure style=\"width:600px\" class=\"alignnone\"><figcaption>Attorneys for former President Donald Trump, Todd Blanche (L), and John Lauro leave the E.
