Knudsen, along with\u200b a group of \u200c18 \u200dattorneys general, filed an amicus brief in \u200bthe U.S. \u2063Court of Appeals \u2063for the 4th Circuit, urging the court to side with plaintiffs who argue that the law creates &#8220;unconstitutional&#8221; \u2062gun-free <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/washington-abortion-clinic-protesters-have-restrictions-eased\/\" title=\"Washington Abortion Clinic Protesters Have Restrictions Eased\">buffer zones<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>A Personal Passion for the Second Amendment<\/h3>\n<p>When\u2062 asked about his involvement in the\u2063 case, Knudsen expressed his personal connection to\u2063 the Second Amendment. As\u200b an avid hunter, reloader, and\u200d competitive \u2063shooter,\u200b he closely follows issues related to gun rights. He believes that\u2063 if laws like\u2063 the one in\u200d Maryland go unchallenged, \u200bsimilar regulations could be attempted in other states.<\/p>\n<p>Montana&#8217;s assistant solicitor general outlined in the brief that\u200c the\u2062 Montgomery County law prohibits \u200bthe sale, transfer,\u200b or possession of firearms within \u2064100 yards\u200b of a place of \u2063public assembly. The definition of a &#8220;place of public assembly&#8221; includes various locations such \u2062as parks, places of\u2063 worship, schools, libraries, recreational facilities, multipurpose exhibition facilities, and\u200b childcare facilities.<\/p>\n<p>The plaintiffs in the case,\u200b supported by \u2063the 19\u2063 states, argue that\u2064 the law effectively prevents\u2062 anyone besides designated security\u2063 guards and active \u200dpolice \u200cofficers from carrying a gun\u200c for self-defense in public. They claim that\u2063 it\u2063 is practically impossible for permit\u2064 holders to legally carry a \u200dhandgun \u2062within\u200d Montgomery County.<\/p>\n<p>The Supreme Court&#8217;s 2022 decision\u200d in Bruen v. \u200dNew York Rifle &#038; Pistol Association established that while governments can regulate\u200b the public carrying of guns, they cannot prohibit it for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/california-sheriffs-tell-newsom-they-wont-enforce-covid-curfew\/\" title=\"California Sheriffs Tell Newsom They Won't Enforce COVID Curfew\">law-abiding citizens<\/a>. The court \u200calso\u2063 acknowledged that \u200c&#8221;sensitive \u200bplaces&#8221; can be designated \u2063as \u200c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/gun-rights-activist-tells-congress-education-can-reduce-shootings-not-more-laws\/\" title=\"Gun Rights Activist Tells Congress Education Can Reduce Shootings, Not More Laws\">gun-free zones<\/a>, but did not provide \u200da\u2064 clear\u2063 definition of what qualifies as sensitive.<\/p>\n<p>Montana&#8217;s\u200d brief argues\u2062 that the historical \u2064record does not support the notion that places of worship, parks, recreational facilities, multipurpose \u2063exhibition facilities, public libraries, and\u200d buffer zones have traditionally been subject \u2064to firearm \u2064restrictions.\u2063 The attorneys general of\u2064 18 other states have also signed the brief in support of challenging the \u200cMaryland\u2063 law.<\/p>\n<p>The legal battle over Maryland&#8217;s gun \u2063laws extends beyond Montgomery\u200b County.\u200d The state&#8217;s SB1 law, signed by Governor Wes Moore, has faced opposition from the National Rifle Association and other gun groups.
