and mistreated while in jail.<\/p>\n<p>Makyyla \u200dHolland, a transgender individual, was arrested on charges\u2062 of assault and criminal contempt\u200c and \u200cwas \u2063booked into Broome County Jail in early 2021, according \u2063to the U.K.&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-12448089\/Trans-woman-paid-New-York-state-misgendered.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daily Mail<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The 25-year-old \u200calleged \u200dthat he\u2064 experienced \u2062abuse and discrimination during his time in jail, as stated by the New \u2064York Civil Liberties Union and the\u2062 Transgender\u2063 Legal Defense\u200d and Education \u200dFund, who \u2064filed a lawsuit\u2062 on\u2064 his behalf in 2022.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Meet our client, Makyyla Holland.<\/p>\n<p>When Makyyla, a trans woman, was \u200ddetained at Broome County Jail, she \u2063was housed with men,\u200d misgendered, and attacked\u2063 by officers daily.<\/p>\n<p>Now \u200dshe\u2019s suing for the abuse she endured in\u200d jail \u2062\u2014 and to \u200censure it doesn\u2019t happen to more trans people. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/9sXMkChHpF\">pic.twitter.com\/9sXMkChHpF<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 \u2064NYCLU (@NYCLU) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NYCLU\/status\/1509183669780557837?\">March 30, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;I was harassed, mocked, misgendered \u2063and worse: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/transgender-ex-inmate-awarded-major-windfall-after-claiming-he-was-misgendered-in-jail\/\" title=\"Transgender ex-inmate receives significant compensation for being 'misgendered' in prison.\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/washington-state-jail-offers-inmates-ramen-noodles-to-get-vaccine\/\" title=\"Washington State Jail Offers Inmates Ramen Noodles To Get Vaccine\">jail staff<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/airstrip-one-transgender-police-permitted-to-strip-search-biologically-female-suspects\/\" title=\"Airstrip One: Transgender Police Permitted to Strip-Search Biologically Female Suspects\">strip-searched<\/a><\/a> me, beat me up, placed \u200cme in \u200bthe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/transgender-male-inmate-rapes-woman-nycs-rikers-island-jail\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">male section<\/a> of\u200d the jail, and withheld \u200cmy hormones for a period of time, forcing\u2063 me to go into\u2064 agonizing withdrawal,&#8221; Holland said in a March\u2063 22 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyclu.org\/en\/press-releases\/transgender-woman-sues-broome-county-and-broome-county-sheriff-and-jail-staff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No\u2062 person&#8217;s gender identity\u2063 gives jail staff the\u2063 authority to harm them, and Broome County law enforcement\u200d and\u200c jail staff must be \u200dheld \u200daccountable for their actions,&#8221; he\u2063 added. &#8220;The abuses that police and jail staff\u2064 across New\u200c York state commit against\u200b transgender New \u2063Yorkers must end.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Holland specifically claimed that during the intake\u200c process, he was assaulted,\u200b resulting in\u2063 a broken tooth and \u200da\u2063 bump on \u2063the\u2064 head,\u200b as reported by the\u2062 Daily Mail.<\/p>\n<p>He also alleged that\u2062 he was strip-searched by male officers and forced \u200bto remove his acrylic nails and wig without the proper equipment.<\/p>\n<p>On \u2063Thursday, the\u200b NYCLU \u200cand\u200b the TLDEF <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyclu.org\/en\/press-releases\/transgender-woman-reaches-landmark-settlement-broome-county-following-lawsuit-over\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> that \u200dthe lawsuit had been settled, with\u200d Broome County agreeing to pay Holland $160,000 &#8220;for harms \u2064she suffered.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As part of the settlement, the county \u2062will also \u200bimplement changes to its policies regarding transgender inmates, including housing them according \u200bto their \u2062gender identity, allowing them to choose the gender\u2063 of the officer who searches them, using their preferred pronouns, and \u2064providing \u200dclothing and toiletry items consistent with their gender identity.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">BREAKING: Our client Makyyla Holland has reached a settlement with the Broome County Jail following the violence and discrimination\u200d she faced there \u2063because \u2062she\u2019s transgender.<\/p>\n<p>This is a historic win\u2063 for Makyyla and for all trans \u200dpeople who have\u200c been mistreated while incarcerated. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/TNTozOmYp3\">pic.twitter.com\/TNTozOmYp3<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 NYCLU (@NYCLU) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NYCLU\/status\/1694691971296596247?\">August 24, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;No one should ever have\u2063 to go through what I\u200c went through at the\u2064 Broome County Jail, and I am so grateful that with this\u2063 new policy, hopefully no\u2064 one else\u2063 ever will;\u2063 this is a great outcome,&#8221;
