New European Union regulations are coming into effect this week, and they will have a broad impact on these companies&#8217; global operations.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">Starting on Aug. 26, the sweeping EU Digital Services Act (DSA) will bring about significant changes in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/twitter-cannot-be-saved-its-time-for-free-speech-proponents-to-let-it-die\/\" title=\"Twitter Cannot Be Saved. It\u2019s Time For Free Speech Proponents To Let It Die\">social media content moderation<\/a>, user privacy, transparency, and the fight against counterfeit goods sold online.<\/p>\n<p>The EU law also aims to prevent \u200cthe spread\u200c of harmful content or disinformation, restrict certain user-targeting advertising practices, and require companies to \u200bshare internal data with regulators.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h2>Big \u200cTech Platforms Face EU Regulatory Deadline<\/h2>\n<p>But that&#8217;s not all. The \u2064DSA is the most ambitious effort to regulate the tech industry, and companies will need to implement major software changes or face massive fines.<\/p>\n<p>Any company found in breach of the new act \u2062could be fined up to 6 percent of its global turnover, and repeat offenders may even be banned from operating in the EU\u200b altogether.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Some online platforms have already taken steps to avoid these hefty fines. However, platforms like\u2063 eBay, Airbnb, Netflix, and even \u2064Pornhub were \u200cnot included in the list, but they may be added later \u2063on.<\/p>\n<p>Pornhub, for example, has faced scrutiny for hosting illegal and violent content, and it will face \u200bfewer obligations than other platforms for now. However, by February 2024, the DSA will be applied to all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/tech-giants-to-face-new-sweeping-eu-regulations\/\" title=\"EU to impose strict regulations on tech giants.\">online platforms\u2064 providing digital services<\/a> to Europeans, regardless of size.<\/p>\n<p>The European bloc has been at the \u2062forefront of tech regulation, and more laws are \u2062on\u200b the horizon, such \u200das the Digital Markets Act and the AI Act. These laws \u200dare expected to influence similar regulations for tech firms worldwide.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">According to Brussels, the DSA aims &#8220;to establish a level playing field to\u200d foster innovation, growth, and \u2064competitiveness both in the European Single Market and globally.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">European policymakers have long been concerned about the power of Silicon Valley and the wider tech industry. They want to ensure the protection of Europeans&#8217; fundamental rights \u200cto privacy\u200d and freedom of speech.<\/p>\n<p>However, \u200dsome\u200b civil liberties advocates worry that the new law may \u200cbe used by\u2062 authorities in Brussels to\u200b suppress\u2063 unpopular\u2063 views\u200d instead of safeguarding free speech.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Who will get to define what actually constitutes mis\/disinfo? Surely, it will be the job of an [independent] regulator\/judicial authority with clear\u2064 procedural parameters and \u200bminimal conflicts of interest. But no. The \u200dultimate decider will be&#8230;the EU Commission,&#8221; said one European commentator in a post on\u200b X.<\/p>\n<p>European Commissioner Thierry\u2062 Breton emphasized that &#8220;the real test begins now&#8221; and vowed to \u200dthoroughly enforce the\u200c DSA and use new powers to investigate and sanction \u200bplatforms where necessary.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h2>Amazon and Zalando Challenge Inclusion<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\">Meanwhile, two platforms on the list, Amazon.com and German fashion retailer Zalando,\u2063 are currently contesting their inclusion in court.<\/p>\n<p>Amazon, with its 181 million EU\u200c users, filed a legal challenge in July, arguing that it was unfairly singled out compared to its larger rivals who were not designated.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the\u200b legal challenges, Amazon has \u2063stated that\u2062 it will comply with \u2062the DSA while awaiting a final decision from the EU General Court in \u2062Luxembourg.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\">Amazon will introduce DSA-compliant \u200dfeatures, such as a new channel for users to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/big-tech-braces-for-roll-out-of-eus-digital-services-act\/\" title=\"Big Tech prepares for EU's Digital Services Act launch.\">report incorrect product information<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Zalando, on the other\u2064 hand, argues that it has\u2064 only 31 million European visitors and &#8220;zero risk of\u2063 illegal content&#8221; due to its\u2064 model. Nevertheless, it will make the necessary changes to \u200ccomply with the law.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Generally, Zalando\u2064 doesn&#8217;t pose systemic risks like other platforms. That&#8217;s why we don&#8217;t think we fit in that category,&#8221; said \u200cAurelie Caulier, Zalando&#8217;s head of public affairs for the\u2062 EU.
