In a letter \u200dsent to Governor\u2062 Gavin Newsom and legislative leaders on August 21, the group requested an additional $1.5 billion in funding to \u2062support a bill \u2062aimed at tackling this issue.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe \u200chave reached a crisis point,\u201d the authors wrote\u2063 in the letter.\u200c \u201cSeriously mentally ill and addicted Californians are languishing in \u200dour \u200dcommunities in dangerous encampments.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria led this coalition of city officials, which included Mayor\u2063 London Breed of San Francisco, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, and other mayors and\u2063 supervisors representing Long Beach, Oakland, Riverside,\u2062 Sacramento, and San Jose.<\/p>\n<h3>Assembly Bill 531: Addressing the Crisis<\/h3>\n<p>The focus of\u2063 their \u2063request is Assembly\u200c Bill\u200c 531,\u200c also known as the Behavioral Health Infrastructure Bond Act, authored by Assemblywoman Jacqui Irwin. This bill proposes\u2064 a $5 billion bond measure to be decided by voters \u2063in the 2024 primary election. However, the mayors and \u200dsupervisors \u200bare urging for the bond amount to be revised to $6.5 billion \u200cto meet \u200bthe\u200d increasing demand for addiction recovery and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/white-house-releases-list-of-president-trumps-accomplishments-and-it-is-historic\/\" title=\"White House Releases List of President Trump\u2019s Accomplishments \u2013  And It Is Historic!\">mental health services<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The additional funding would enable the\u2063 creation of thousands of treatment\u200b beds and supportive housing units, where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/celebrate-the-truth-politifact-announces-festival-of-fact-checking-with-special-guests-anthony-fauci-and-cnns-brian-stelter\/\" title=\"\u2018Celebrate The Truth!\u2019 PolitiFact Announces \u2018Festival Of Fact-Checking,\u2019 With Special Guests Anthony Fauci and CNN\u2019s Brian Stelter\">mental health counselors<\/a> can provide much-needed \u200dassistance\u200b to residents.<\/p>\n<h3>Addressing Homelessness\u200b and Mental Health<\/h3>\n<p>The connection between homelessness and\u200c mental health challenges is significant, with over 40,000 homeless Californians suffering from severe\u2064 mental illness and \u200dmore than 30,000 struggling with addiction, according to the legislative analysis of the bill.<\/p>\n<p>Veterans \u2063are particularly affected, with over 10,000 experiencing homelessness in 2022. At least 50 \u2063percent of homeless veterans suffer from mental illness, and\u200c 70 percent are impacted by substance abuse.<\/p>\n<p>Assemblywoman Jacqui \u200bIrwin emphasized the \u2062importance of AB 531 in expanding access \u2064to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/california-mayors-ask-for-1-5-billion-to-help-homeless-suffering-from-mental-health-issues\/\" title=\"California mayors seek .5B to aid mentally ill homeless.\">high-quality residential care<\/a>\u2064 for those\u2064 with the\u2062 greatest\u2063 needs, including veterans. The \u2062bill aims \u200dto address the behavioral health \u2064needs of veterans who are currently homeless or \u2063at risk \u2062of homelessness.<\/p>\n<h3>Complementary Legislation<\/h3>\n<p>Senate Bill 326, authored \u200dby Sen. Susan\u2062 Eggman, is another crucial piece of legislation related to mental health services. This bill seeks\u2064 to \u200cmodernize California&#8217;s Mental Health Services Act, which was\u2064 approved by voters in 2004. \u2062SB 326 has already passed the Assembly Health Committee \u200cand will next be heard by the\u200b Assembly&#8217;s Housing and Community Development Committee.<\/p>\n<h3>Urgent Action Needed<\/h3>\n<p>Governor Newsom has stressed the need for immediate action to address the homelessness and \u200bmental\u200c health crises in the state. In a press release on August 23, \u2063he expressed his support for SB 326 and the ongoing efforts\u200c to confront these pressing\u2064 issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCalifornians know the urgency\u2063 needed to address the crises our \u2063state\u200d and our country are \u2062facing, from opioids to mental health to\u2063 homelessness.
