I hate the\u200d way they turn your beverage into a mushy pulp and leave thin strings of paper stuck to your palate, which obliges you to hack and spit like a cat with a furball in front of polite company.<\/p>\n<p>But I accept that pathetic excuse for a sipping tube because the restaurant tells me\u200b it\u2019s the \u201cright thing to do\u201d for the environment.<\/p>\n<p>And because I can never \u200dremember to pack a plastic one \u2062in my purse.<\/p>\n<p>But a study published Thursday in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/19440049.2023.2240908\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Food \u2064Additives and Contaminants<\/a> \u2062shows that not only are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/100-facts-elon-musk-owned-twitter-should-now-allow-people-to-say-without-getting-banned\/\" title=\"100 Facts Elon Musk-Owned Twitter Should Now Allow People To Say Without Getting Banned\">paper straws<\/a> gross to drink with, they are actually\u2062 bad for your\u200c health.<\/p>\n<p>In the study, conducted in Belgium, researchers \u2062examined 39 straw brands \u2014 composed of paper, bamboo, glass, stainless steel or plastic \u2014 available in supermarkets, toy stores,\u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bold-fiscal-policy-matters-yellen-says-biden-spending-agenda-is-meant-to-cut-inequality\/\" title=\"\u2018Bold Fiscal Policy Matters\u2019: Yellen Says Biden Spending Agenda Is Meant To Cut \u2018Inequality\u2019\">fast-food chains<\/a>, drug stores and \u200ce-commerce \u200bplatforms for concentrations.<\/p>\n<p>They looked for \u200cconcentrations \u200cof poly- \u200cand perfluoroalkyl substances \u2014 synthetic compounds commonly dubbed \u201cforever chemicals\u201d because they resist being broken\u2063 down by either the environment or \u200bthe human body.<\/p>\n<p>PFAS usually are found in things such as outdoor apparel and non-stick cookware because of their resistance to water, heat, and\u2064 stains.<\/p>\n<p>The results from the study indicated that 69 percent of the brands\u200b contained PFAS,\u2063 with \u2063paper straws showing the highest prevalence of these chemicals.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, 90 percent of paper straws, 80 percent of bamboo straws, 75 percent of plastic straws\u2063 and\u200b 40 percent of glass straws tested positive for PFAS, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2023\/08\/24\/paper-straws-harmful-forever-chemicals-plastic-straws\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fortune<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The brand with the highest concentration of PFAS was also, surprise, surprise, a paper straw brand.<\/p>\n<p>According to the study, perfluorooctanoic acid\u200c was the most common of the PFAS found in the straws. Though\u2062 it is no longer made in the U.S., it is made in some other countries and can be found in products bought in this country, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/risk-prevention\/chemicals\/teflon-and-perfluorooctanoic-acid-pfoa.html#:~:text=Studies%20in%20humans&#038;text=Some%20of%20these%20studies%20have,have%20been%20due%20to%20chance.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Cancer Society<\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to that\u2062 organization, studies have indicated exposure to PFOA increases the risk of testicular cancer and kidney cancer and might be linked to prostate, \u2064bladder, \u200dbreast and ovarian cancer.<\/p>\n<p>No one knows \u200chow much of these \u2064chemical \u200dsubstances make their way into our drinks.<\/p>\n<p>But Thimo Groffen, an environmental scientist at the University of\u200d Antwerp and the author of the study, issued a warning \u2064in a <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.taylorandfrancisgroup.com\/paper-drinking-straws-may-be-harmful-and-may-not-be-better-for-the-environment-than-plastic-versions-researchers-warn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news \u2064release<\/a> \u200c Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStraws made from plant-based materials, such as paper and bamboo, are often advertised as \u2063being more sustainable and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/coroner-issues-warning-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-political-activism-and-influence-of-bill-gates\/\" title=\"The Political Activism And Influence of Bill Gates\">eco-friendly<\/a>-straw-kills-woman\/&#8221; target=&#8221;_blank&#8221; rel=&#8221;noopener&#8221;>eco-friendly<\/a> than those\u2062 made\u200d from plastic,\u201d he\u200d said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, the presence of PFAS\u200b in these straws means that\u2019s not necessarily true.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Paper drinking straws may not be better for the environment and could \u2063be damaging your health <\/p>\n<p>A new study finds non-biodegradable chemicals in 18\/20\u2064 paper straw brands  <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/UblWrz4yFw\">https:\/\/t.co\/UblWrz4yFw<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MaartenKeusters?\">@MaartenKeusters<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ElsToxic?\">@ElsToxic<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LievenBervoets?\">@LievenBervoets<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/h2c1sTxrka\">pic.twitter.com\/h2c1sTxrka<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Taylor&#038;Francis News (@tandfnewsroom) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tandfnewsroom\/status\/1694989496796774563?\">August 25, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Given this data, Groffen suggested using metal straws or not \u200dusing straws at all rather than using paper\u200d ones.<\/p>\n<p>As often is the case, it appears the cure might be worse than\u2063 the illness.
