Version: 4.0.47--><div data-post-content=\"true\" class=\"post_content\" id=\"post_content\">\n<h2>Union Members Vote Overwhelmingly to Authorize Strike<\/h2>\n<p>Union members \u200bof the United Auto Workers (UAW) on Friday voted overwhelmingly\u200d to authorize a strike \u2064at Detroit&#8217;s Big Three automakers, setting up a tense final stretch of contract negotiations ahead of a looming deadline.<\/p>\n<p>UAW President Shawn \u2063Fain said in a statement on Friday that 97 percent of the union&#8217;s 150,000 members who work at Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis, voted in favor of going on strike if a new contract agreement isn&#8217;t reached \u2062when the current one expires in several weeks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur\u200d union\u2019s membership is clearly fed up with living paycheck to paycheck while\u200d the corporate elite and billionaire class continue to make out like bandits,\u201d Mr. Fain \u200bsaid. \u201cThe Big Three have been breaking the bank while we have been\u200b breaking our backs.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>Related \u200bStories<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\n        <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/article\/uaw-workers-reject-cnh-offer-extending-8-month-strike-4970020\">UAW Workers Reject CNH\u2063 Offer, Extending 8-month Strike<\/a><br \/>\n        <span class=\"text-comp-caption\">1\/8\/2023<\/span>\n      <\/li>\n<li>\n        <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/article\/no-current-talks-with-tesla-about-potential-union-vote-uaw-president-4371496\">No Current \u2063Talks With Tesla About Potential Union Vote: UAW President<\/a><br \/>\n        <span class=\"text-comp-caption\">3\/31\/2022<\/span>\n      <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The authorization vote doesn&#8217;t guarantee that a \u200dstrike will take place, only \u200cthat UAW members have\u2063 agreed \u2064to a walkout if the \u200dthree automakers don&#8217;t \u2064put forward satisfactory terms for the new contract.<\/p>\n<p>The three contracts between UAW and Ford, General\u200b Motors, and Stellantis\u2014which sells cars and trucks under the brands such as Dodge, Ram, and Chrysler\u2014are set to expire\u200b on Sept. \u200c14.<\/p>\n<p>Contract proposals made by UAW so far would add \u2063roughly $80 billion in labor costs over four years for\u200b the Big Three automakers, according to Kristin Dziczek, automotive policy advisor for the Federal \u200bReserve Bank of Chicago\u2019s Detroit branch.<\/p>\n<h2>&#8216;Forge a Fair Agreement&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>Strike authorizations \u2064are a common tactic \u200bduring contract talks, \u200bthough\u200d tensions around \u2064these negotiations have been unusually high amid the Biden administration&#8217;s push towards electrification.<\/p>\n<p>The UAW has expressed concern about the transition\u200c to electric vehicles,\u2062 including federally subsidized work going to\u200c non-union battery\u200b plants.<\/p>\n<p>The White House has become involved in trying\u200b to broker\u2064 a deal, with Mr. Fain meeting President Joe Biden in the West Wing briefly in July to outline the UAW&#8217;s \u200bdemands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the Big Three auto companies and the United Auto \u200dWorkers come together\u2014one month before the expiration of their contract\u2014to negotiate a new agreement, I want to be clear about where I stand. I\u2019m asking all sides to work together to forge a fair \u200dagreement,\u201d President Biden said\u2062 in an Aug. 14 statement.<\/p>\n<h2>&#8216;Audacious and Ambitious List of Proposals&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>Mr. Fain has outlined an ambitious\u200d set of goals, including a significant 46 percent \u200dpay hike for hourly workers over the duration of the new four-year contract that is being\u2064 negotiated.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re proposing substantial wage increases to offset years of damaging inflation and put auto workers back on a path toward\u200d shared prosperity,&#8221; Mr. \u200cFain said \u2064in a video message a few weeks ago.<\/p>\n<p>Wages\u2062 haven&#8217;t kept up with\u200c the pace of inflation, \u200dwhich hit a four-decade high of 9.1 percent in June 2022.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yes, we&#8217;re demanding double-digit pay raises,&#8221; Mr. Fain continued. &#8220;Big Three CEOs saw their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/uaw-union-workers-authorize-auto-strike-amid-contract-negotiations\/\" title=\"UAW union workers approve auto strike during contract talks.\">pay spike 40 percent<\/a> on average\u2064 over the last four \u2062years. We know our members are worth the same and more.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Fain has also called for ending the tiered\u2063 wage system\u2062 that\u200b pays new hires less than veterans, reinstating cost-of-living adjustments, and \u200c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/uaw-members-authorize-strike-at-ford-gm-stellantis\/\" title=\"UAW members approve strike at Ford, GM, Stellantis.\">restoring defined-benefit pension plans<\/a> that the automakers\u2062 ended \u2063years ago for new employees.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As I go to the table this week, I&#8217;ll be \u200dgiving the Big Three the \u2064most audacious and ambitious list of proposals that they&#8217;ve seen in decades,&#8221; Mr. Fain said in the video message.<\/p>\n<p>For their part, the Big Three automakers have said they \u200bwant to \u200creach a\u200c deal\u200c that&#8217;s fair to workers but that also gives the companies flexibility as the industry shifts to electric \u200bmodels that have fewer parts and \u2063require less labor.<\/p>\n<p>It takes around two-thirds the time to assemble a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nissan-expects-38-full-year-profit-rise-on-stronger-sales-outlook\/\" title=\"Nissan predicts a 38% increase in annual profits due to improved sales prospects.\">battery-powered electric vehicle<\/a>\u2064 as it does a vehicle with an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/report-philadelphias-proterra-fleet-in-complete-shambles\/\" title=\"Report: Philadelphia\u2019s Proterra Fleet in Complete Shambles\">internal combustion engine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Among its various\u200c demands, the UAW\u200b has asked for protections in case of plant closures.<\/p>\n<p>The Epoch Times \u200chas reached out to Ford, General Motors, \u2063and Stellantis with a request\u2062 for comment on \u200dthe strike authorization.<\/p>\n<h2>&#8216;Standard Procedure Used\u2063 by Labor Unions&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>General Motors called the\u2063 strike authorization a\u200d &#8220;standard procedure used by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/team-biden-hopeful-economic-outlook-brightening-the-polls-dont-tell-the-full-story\/\" title=\"Biden's team optimistic about improving economy: Polls don't reveal everything.\">labor \u2062unions<\/a> going into contract negotiations&#8221; in an Aug. 25 update following\u2064 the\u2064 UAW&#8217;s vote.<\/p>\n<p>The c<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>for General Motors, Ford, and Fiat Chrysler voted in favor of authorizing a strike.
