In response to accusations of promoting &#8220;ableism&#8221; and discrimination against people with\u2064 disabilities, the NIH is determined\u200c to create a more inclusive and empowering message.<\/p>\n<p>In December 2022, an advisory working group at the\u200c NIH recognized the current \u2062mission statement as\u200b offensive. The statement claimed that the organization&#8217;s goal\u200c was to apply scientific knowledge &#8220;to enhance health, lengthen life, and reduce illness and disability.&#8221; This language was seen as perpetuating ableist beliefs and suggesting that disabled individuals needed\u2063 to be &#8220;fixed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;One immediate\u2063 action for the NIH to support disability inclusion is to remove\u200d the language of \u2018reducing disability\u2019 from the NIH mission \u200bstatement,&#8221; emphasized\u2063 NIH \u2062scientists as part of the working group&#8217;s final recommendations for \u200dorganizational reform.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The proposed language for the new mission statement is both powerful and inclusive. It states, &#8220;To seek fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and to apply that knowledge \u200bto optimize health and prevent or reduce illness for all people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The NIH is actively seeking\u2062 public input on this proposed change until November 24. \u2063They value the opinions and perspectives of\u200b the community before finalizing the new mission statement.<\/p>\n<p>Acting\u2062 NIH Director Lawrence A.
