The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/oil-companies-sue-u-s-over-gulf-auction-changes-meant-to-protect-whale\/\" title=\"Oil firms sue U.S. over Gulf auction changes for whale protection.\">final sale notice included<\/a> new restrictions on\u200c development meant to protect the endangered Rice&#8217;s whale.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today we&#8217;re taking steps to \u200bchallenge the Department of the Interior&#8217;s unjustified actions to further\u2062 restrict American energy access in the Gulf of Mexico,&#8221; <strong>American Petroleum \u200bInstitute Senior Vice President and \u200bGeneral Counsel\u200b Ryan Meyers<\/strong> said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The Interior\u2064 Department did\u200b not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<h3>Unjustified Changes\u200c and \u200bLegal Disputes<\/h3>\n<p>The new lease \u200bstipulations removed\u200c more than 6 million acres (2.4 million hectares) originally intended to be offered\u2062 at the auction and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/oil-companies-sue-biden-admin-for-restricting-drilling-to-protect-whales\/\" title=\"Oil firms sue Biden admin over drilling restrictions to safeguard whales.\">require \u2064vessel operators maintain<\/a> a vigilant watch for the whales and \u2064abide by speed restrictions in the \u2063whale&#8217;s habitat.<\/p>\n<p><strong>API argued\u2064 that the changes were unjustified\u200c and unlawful.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The changes stem from an agreement earlier this month between\u2062 federal agencies\u200b and environmental\u2063 groups that sued in 2020\u2064 alleging \u200bthe government \u2062did not provide adequate safeguards \u200bfor the whales.
