Core inflation \u2064in Japan\u2019s capital \u2062slowed in August for the second \u200bstraight month\u200c but remained well above \u200dthe central \u2064bank\u2019s\u2062 2% target, data showed\u2062 on Friday, keeping policymakers under pressure to phase\u2062 out decades of massive \u200dmonetary stimulus.<\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1\" style=\"min-width: 320px; min-height: 50px;  text-align: center;\">  \t<script>  \t\tgoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1'); });  \t<\/script>  <\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot__ad-label\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>The data for \u200dTokyo, which is \u200cseen as a leading indicator of nationwide trends, adds to recent signs of broadening inflationary pressure in the world\u2019s third-largest economy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The \u200dTokyo core consumer price index (CPI), \u200cwhich excludes volatile fresh food but includes fuel costs, rose 2.8% \u200din August from a year earlier, against a\u2064 median market forecast for a 2.9% gain.<\/strong> \u2063 It slowed from a \u200c3.0%\u2064 rise in July \u200band exceeded the Bank of Japan\u2019s\u200b 2% target \u2063for the 15th straight month.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts expect inflation \u2063to \u2062keep slowing in\u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/inflation-in-japans-capital-slows-in-august-stays-above-boj-target\/\" title=\"August inflation in Tokyo decelerates, remains higher than BOJ goal.\">coming months reflecting recent declines<\/a> \u200bin commodity prices \u200band the base effect of last year\u2019s sharp rises.<\/p>\n<p>But an index that strips away both fresh food and fuel costs,\u200b which\u2064 is closely watched by the \u2064BOJ\u2064 as a better \u200dgauge of broad price trends, held steady at 4.0% \u2062in August, highlighting the risk of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/inflation-costing-average-american-717-a-month\/\" title=\"Inflation Costing Average American 7 a Month\">inflation remaining stubbornly high<\/a>, analysts say.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInflation likely peaked in June \u200dbut isn\u2019t slowing as much as expected, suggesting that \u2064companies aren\u2019t done raising\u2064 prices,\u201d said Yoshiki Shinke, chief economist\u2063 at Dai-ichi Life Research Institute.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe \u200doutlook\u2063 depends\u2062 largely on whether consumers can \u2062continue to weather price hikes. \u2064It\u2019s \u2062very hard, probably even for the BOJ, to predict the \u200bfuture path of inflation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While government subsidies drove down utility bills, food and daily necessities continued to see prices rise such \u200bas\u200b a 9% jump in those for seafood and a 15.5% gain for toilet paper.<\/p>\n<p>While much slower\u200b than\u2062 a 4.0% year-on-year rise \u200bin goods prices, services costs were up 2.0% in August after\u2062 gaining 1.9% in July, \u2063the data \u2064showed.<\/p>\n<p>A spike in global commodity prices last year drove many Japanese companies to shed their aversion to price hikes and pass on\u200b higher\u200d costs to households, keeping inflation above\u2062 the BOJ\u2019s target for longer than policymakers initially expected.<\/p>\n<p>The\u2064 inflation overshoot led \u2064the BOJ \u200cto make modest tweaks to its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nervousness-over-banks-sends-euro-1-lower-despite-pmi\/\" title=\"Nervousness over banks sends euro 1% lower despite PMI\">bond yield control policy<\/a> last month, a move investors saw as \u2062a \u2063shift away from decades of ultra-loose monetary policy.<\/p>\n<p>But Governor \u200bKazuo Ueda has ruled\u200d out the\u200c chance of an early exit from ultra-loose policy, saying that it needs to wait until wages rise \u2063enough\u200d to keep inflation sustainably around\u2063 2%.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Tuesday \u200cunveiled plans to cushion the blow from rising prices that is likely\u2063 to include an extension to gasoline and utility subsidies that expire in September \u2013 a move that will weigh on inflation.<\/p>\n<p>The BOJ has said it \u2063is focusing more on trend inflation that strips away \u200done-off factors, such as government\u200c subsidies to curb rises in gasoline and\u2063 utility bills, deciding policy.<\/p>\n<p>Several indices \u2064seen as key\u2064 gauges of trend inflation hit \u200drecord highs in July, heightening the case for a retreat from decades\u2064 of ultra-loose monetary policy.<\/p>\n<p>  (Reporting by Leika\u2064 Kihara and Takahiko Wada.
