Roy Cooper has taken a stand against a Republican-led bill that aims \u2064to make significant changes to the state\u2019s election laws. The \u2064bill includes provisions regarding absentee voting\u200d and same-day registration.<\/p>\n<p>In a bold move, Gov. Cooper vetoed the bill, but it is expected to be\u200b overridden by the state\u2019s GOP-controlled General Assembly.<\/p>\n<p>In a passionate\u2063 video\u200d message, the governor expressed his concerns, stating, \u201cRight now, legislative Republicans in North Carolina are pushing an all-out \u200dassault on\u2062 the right\u2063 to vote.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThis attack has nothing to do with election security and everything to do with keeping and gaining power.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The controversial Senate Bill 747, which was passed by the legislature last week, proposes changes such as\u2063 eliminating\u200d the three-day grace period for the receipt of absentee\u200c ballots. However, it extends the period for challenging\u2064 such ballots to five days after the election.<\/p>\n<p>The bill also introduces new requirements for same-day registrants, including the\u200d use of a \u201cretrievable ballot\u201d with a unique identifier. Additionally,\u2062 it allows\u200c election observers to move freely about\u200b voting locations instead of being confined to\u2063 a specific area.<\/p>\n<p>Gov. Cooper\u200d criticized the bill, accusing Republicans of attempting to disenfranchise\u200c young and minority voters through the new absentee ballot restrictions. He\u2062 stated, \u201cThey know that younger and nonwhite voters tend to vote more by absentee ballot or by early voting,\u200d so they shortened the time your absentee ballots can \u200carrive and still\u2062 count. And they \u2062made it easier to throw\u2063 them\u200d out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The governor also pledged to veto another elections-related bill, Senate Bill 749, if it reaches his desk. This bill aims to shift the power to select members of the state\u2019s elections board from the governor to the legislature\u2063 and restructure the board to have an equal number of Republicans and Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans argue that these bills strengthen North Carolina\u2019s elections and help prevent fraud. Republican state \u200bSen. Warren Daniel of Burke County stated, \u201cWe are creating a\u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/election-security-is-key-for-voter-turnout-florida-rep-lee\/\" title=\"Election Security Is Key for Voter Turnout: Florida Rep. But Gov.
