While technology has changed dramatically over the last 250 years, human nature and family dynamics have not.<\/p>\n<h3>UP FOR DEBATE: TRUMP, \u200dDESANTIS, \u200dAND 2024 GOP HOPEFULS&#8217; STANCES ON ABORTION<\/h3>\n<p>And despite the headlines and congressional\u2063 hearings, the historical \u2063record shows that even the most misbehaved presidential\u2063 children\u2064 may not have much impact on election\u2062 outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>Troubled first\u2062 family members are as\u200d old as the presidency itself, dating back \u200ball the\u2064 way to the first president of the United \u200cStates and continuing \u200ctoday, only with \u2064better \u200ddocumentation.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s not to say that problem children are the norm. More than one executive offspring has risen to\u2062 become president themselves, while \u200bothers\u2063 caused headache after headache, some even ruining their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-white-house-follows-familiar-playbook-on-embarrassing-presidential-relatives\/\" title=\"Biden White House sticks to old script with embarrassing presidential relatives.\">fathers&#8217; post-presidential lives<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The first example carries a bit of an asterisk. George Washington did not have any biological\u200c children but helped \u2064raise the offspring of\u2062 his \u200dwife Martha,\u2063 who had\u200d four \u2064children by her first husband before he died\u2063 and left\u2063 her a 26-year-old \u200cwidow.<\/p>\n<p>George \u200cWashington grew particularly frustrated \u200cwith one of his step-grandchildren, George \u200dWashington Parke Custis, which we know of today thanks to Washington&#8217;s \u200cletters. Custis attended \u2063three \u200ddifferent colleges as a young man, including\u200b the precursors to the University of Pennsylvania and\u200b Princeton\u2064 University, and graduated from none of them.<\/p>\n<p>After \u200dCustis\u2063 returned home for good after only one semester at a Maryland college, George Washington sent him back \u200cto his mother\u2062 with\u2062 a \u2063searing note that could describe a modern \u2063teenager who plays \u200dtoo many \u2063video games.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;He \u2064appears to me to be \u2063moped and stupid,&#8221; the first president wrote. &#8220;[He] says nothing, and\u2062 is always in some hole \u2064or corner excluded\u2062 from the company.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Custis repaid Washington somewhat in later years by turning his home (now part of Arlington National\u2062 Cemetery)\u200c into a shrine to his famous grandfather, and even \u200dwrote books and plays about George Washington&#8217;s life.<\/p>\n<p>The fourth president was\u200d not so lucky.<\/p>\n<p>James \u200cMadison is hailed as the &#8220;Father of the Constitution,&#8221; but he was also the stepfather of \u2062a \u200dman who brought the entire Madison \u200bfamily crashing down.<\/p>\n<p>That man, John Payne Todd, \u200bis\u2064 arguably one of the closest predecessors to Hunter Biden. Like the younger Biden, Todd&#8217;s life was marked by early \u200dtragedy\u200d and personal struggle. Todd&#8217;s \u2063father died when he was just 1 year \u200dold,\u2064 and his \u200bmother\u200c married the much older\u200c Madison a year later.<\/p>\n<p>As an adult, Todd never developed a career but did develop a\u200c love for alcohol, guns, and gambling. He was twice sent to debtors&#8217; prison, and Madison later mortgaged and \u200bthen\u2062 lost his Montpelier, Virginia, plantation in order \u2063to cover his stepson&#8217;s debts.<\/p>\n<p>Todd&#8217;s\u2064 mother spent the end\u2063 of her life in genteel poverty following Madison&#8217;s death and the sale\u200c of Montpelier, and Todd \u200donly\u200d outlived her by two years before succumbing to \u200btyphoid fever at age 59.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t \u200call bad for the Founding Fathers. The sixth president, \u200bJohn Quincy\u200d Adams, was the eldest son of \u2063the second president, John Adams, becoming the first man to follow his father into the executive office.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;On\u2062 balance, presidential \u200cchildren have been more good than \u2064bad,&#8221; presidential historian Craig Shirley told \u2062the Washington Examiner.\u2062 Shirley points to \u200cexamples like \u200dthe \u2062four sons of Franklin \u200dDelano Roosevelt \u2064who all served in World War II, or the sons of \u2062George H.W. Bush who became the 43rd governor\u200d of Florida and the 43rd \u200dpresident.<\/p>\n<p>Yet even some of \u2063the most celebrated presidents didn&#8217;t <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/our-familys-sick-why-hunter-biden-lied-about-paying-50k-monthly-rent\/\" title=\"\u2018Our Family\u2019s Sick\u2019: Why Hunter Biden Lied About Paying k Monthly Rent\u00a0\">escape family drama<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Honest Abe&#8221; Lincoln attracted a measure of controversy when he and his\u200d wife kept their oldest son, Robert Todd\u2063 Lincoln, out of the Civil War \u2064until \u200cits final \u200bstages, and then in a mostly noncombat role when he finally enlisted.\u200b But the younger Lincoln succeeded\u2062 in life \u2064and was\u200b rumored for\u2064 the presidency in \u2063later\u2064 years, though he declined\u2062 to \u200brun.<\/p>\n<p>One of\u2062 the more colorful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/billionaire-mega-donor-at-center-of-hunter-biden-art-sales-raises-ethics-concerns\/\" title=\"Billionaire Mega-Donor At Center Of Hunter Biden Art Sales Raises Ethics Concerns\">presidential children<\/a> \u200dwas \u2064Alice Roosevelt Longworth, the \u200birrepressible daughter of Teddy Roosevelt. Her father\u2062 became president\u200b when she was just 17, and\u2063 Longworth soon\u200c became a\u200b fashion icon and a tabloid sensation, the subject\u200b of public fascination and \u2064even\u2062 popular music.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The\u200d whole phenomenon of \u200d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/march-for-life-charts-course-for-biden-administration\/\" title=\"March for Life Charts Course for Biden Administration\">media attention<\/a> to\u2064 the first \u2063family really \u2063dates to the \u2064Teddy \u200cRoosevelt administration,\u201d David Greenberg, \u2062a Rutgers \u200bUniversity\u200d history, journalism, \u200dand\u200c media \u2062studies professor, told the Washington Examiner. \u201cHe was the first president since Lincoln with young kids in the White \u200bHouse, and the first ever to \u200bdo so\u2064 amid a mass media \u2064environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Longworth smoked cigarettes in \u2063public, kept a\u2064 pet snake in the White House, and \u200bannoyed \u2063her father with unsolicited political advice. \u2063She married \u200da\u2062 speaker of the House but had her only\u200c child via an affair with a U.S. senator.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;I can either run the country, or I can attend to Alice,&#8221; Roosevelt once said. &#8220;I cannot possibly do both.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>More \u2062recent presidents might have thought the same thing about\u200c their relatives.<\/p>\n<p>Richard Nixon&#8217;s brother Donald borrowed\u200d $205,000 from business magnate Howard Hughes in 1957, while Richard was \u2062vice president, in\u200d order\u200c to shore up a failing drive-in restaurant. The business \u200dwent bust anyway, and questions about the\u200d nature\u200b of the loan \u200dhaunted Nixon for the rest of his political career.<\/p>\n<p>Jimmy Carter was a devout Baptist who taught Sunday school into his 90s, but his relatives proved that the apple can indeed fall far from the tree.<\/p>\n<p>Carter&#8217;s younger\u2064 brother, \u2064Billy\u2064 Carter,\u200d ran \u200bthe \u200dfamily&#8217;s peanut business\u200b and \u200bpromoted &#8220;Billy Beer&#8221; in the\u2062 1970s.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;I had this beer brewed up just for me,&#8221; read a note \u2063from Billy printed on each \u2062can. &#8220;I think it&#8217;s the best I ever tasted. And I&#8217;ve tasted\u2063 a lot.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>His\u200d outlandish reputation took a dark\u2062 turn \u2064when it was reported that he received up to $2 million from\u2064 the government\u200b of Libya, an incident with strong parallels to the doings of Hunter \u200cBiden.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Jimmy Carter&#8217;s sons Jack and \u2064Chip both used illicit drugs, the latter developing a serious drug problem \u2062that\u2063 led to an estrangement\u2063 from his father. Chip and his father reconciled before \u2063Carter became president, and Chip later shared\u200b a \u201cbig \u200cfat Austin\u2064 torpedo\u201d (marijuana) \u200dwith country star Willie Nelson on the roof \u200dof the \u200dWhite House.<\/p>\n<p>Ronald Reagan\u2062 also\u200c found himself saddled \u200dwith children \u2064who seemed diametrically \u200dopposed to his ideals. In 1986, Reagan ordered an investigation\u200d into pornography that became known \u200cas the \u200bMeese\u2063 Report. Eight years\u2063 later, his daughter Patti Davis posed for Playboy. His son \u2063Ron Reagan has \u200bbecome an outspoken liberal advocate\u2064 and atheist.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, there is Bill\u2062 Clinton&#8217;s\u200d half-brother Roger,\u200b an actor whose string of minor roles in movies and television began \u2063and ended with the Clinton presidency.<\/p>\n<p>The Secret Service gave Roger Clinton the\u200b code\u200d name &#8220;headache,&#8221; and for good reason. In 1999, Roger took $50,000 \u2063and a Rolex from the Gambino crime \u200dfamily on the \u200ccondition that he\u2064 convince \u2062Bill\u200d to pardon the jailed mobster Rosario Gambino.<\/p>\n<p>Gambino did not receive a pardon, but Roger Clinton did \u2063shortly before his brother exited the \u2062White\u2063 House, nullifying a 1985 federal cocaine possession\u200d and drug trafficking conviction.<\/p>\n<p>Presidential children in the 21st century have been\u200b mostly clean, though Democrats \u2062might\u2064 cry foul over\u200b the\u200b business dealings of Donald Trump&#8217;s son-in-law \u2064Jared Kushner.<\/p>\n<p>Conservatives counter \u2064that Hunter Biden is not\u2063 just another wayward\u2063 son. They point to growing evidence that Joe Biden \u2062knew about, countenanced, and potentially profited from\u200b his son&#8217;s adventures in Ukraine and China.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;This is \u200cdifferent,\u201d Shirley said. \u201cIt\u2019s \u200cnot isolated. It\u2019s \u2063part of a pattern. It\u2019s indicative \u2064of criminality in the Biden family. He\u2019s the \u2062most obvious representative, and while his father doesn\u2019t snort \u200ccocaine from the rear \u2064ends of hookers \u200das far as we know, he has taken illegitimate money from foreign governments and foreign entities.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The question going forward will be\u200c how much weight \u2063voters\u2062 give the Hunter Biden saga, especially as the 2024 presidential contest sharpens into\u200d view.\u200d History doesn&#8217;t show much correlation between nefarious relatives and election\u2063 results.<\/p>\n<p>University of Virginia Center for Politics Director Larry Sabato \u2063points to the Billy Carter precedent as a relevant example.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cHunter Biden will have the same effect on the 2024\u2062 election \u2064results as Billy Carter had \u2063on the\u200d 1980 results: Next to\u2064 none,\u201d\u200c Sabato posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Refresher: President Carter\u2019s colorful brother Billy took\u2062 a \u2018loan\u2019 of \u2064$200,000 to $2 million\u2064 from \u200dLibyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi \u200b\u2014 months of bad\u200b headlines plus Congressional investigation,\u201d\u200b he \u200ccontinued. \u201cPartisans love this \u200bstuff but it\u2019s not why or how\u200d people vote\u200d for president.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That warning hasn&#8217;t stopped Republicans from digging deeper into Hunter-related investigations,\u200d with impeachment \u200drumors beginning \u2064to grow louder as the GOP seeks more information and documents from a reluctant\u200d Biden administration.
