The \u200c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/oil-companies-sue-u-s-over-gulf-auction-changes-meant-to-protect-whale\/\" title=\"Oil firms sue U.S. over Gulf auction changes for whale protection.\">final sale notice included<\/a> new restrictions on development to protect the endangered Rice&#8217;s whale.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Challenging the Department of the Interior&#8217;s Actions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today we&#8217;re taking steps to challenge the Department of the \u2063Interior&#8217;s unjustified actions to further restrict American energy access in the \u200dGulf of Mexico,&#8221; said Ryan Meyers, \u200cSenior Vice President and General Counsel of the American Petroleum Institute.<\/p>\n<p>The Interior Department has not yet responded to the lawsuit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unjustified Changes to the Lease Stipulations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The new lease stipulations removed over 6 million acres\u200d originally intended for the auction \u2063and imposed requirements on vessel operators to maintain a vigilant watch for \u200dthe whales and abide by\u2062 speed restrictions in their\u200b habitat.<\/p>\n<p>The American \u200cPetroleum Institute argues\u2063 that these changes\u2062 are unjustified and \u2064unlawful.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Agreement with\u200b Environmental Groups<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The\u200b changes\u2062 were made\u2064 as a result of an agreement between federal agencies and environmental groups that sued in\u200b 2020, alleging inadequate safeguards for the whales.
