However, commenters argued \u2064that\u200d the memorial represents a movement towards reunification rather than a \u2064celebration of the Confederacy.<\/p>\n<p>Concerns were raised about the precedent set by dismantling a monument that \u2063symbolizes\u2062 peace, harmony, and reconciliation. Congress allowed for the reinterment of over\u200c 400 Confederate veterans in graves surrounding\u2064 the memorial, forming concentric circles as a means of fostering healing from the Civil War that had occurred half a century earlier.<\/p>\n<p>The memorial features\u2063 a statue of a woman representing the &#8220;American South,&#8221; holding a laurel wreath, plow stock, and pruning hook. Fourteen shields encircle her, representing the 11 Confederate states and the border states of Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri. The pedestal includes 32 engraved figures,\u200b two of which depict slaves, and an inscription that pays tribute to \u200bthe \u2063idea of the Southern states&#8217; war as a &#8220;lost cause.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Arlington Cemetery sought alternatives to the removal of the memorial that would minimize adverse effects. However, commenters argued that removing the \u200dmemorial would not \u2063only be illegal but also disrespectful to those buried at Arlington.<\/p>\n<p>Moses Ezekiel, \u2063a Jewish-American Confederate \u200dveteran\u2062 and renowned sculptor, designed\u2062 the memorial and is buried at\u200b its base.
