The memorial, which has \u200blong been a symbol of unity and reconciliation,\u200c is now facing dismantling after a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/americans-fight-back-against-pentagons-order-to-remove-prominent-confederate-memorial\/\" title=\"Americans resist Pentagon's directive to remove significant Confederate memorial.\">congressionally mandated study deemed<\/a> it problematic.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2063Army sought feedback\u2064 from the\u2062 public as part of the legal process to determine the memorial&#8217;s historic significance and the best approach for its removal. During the three-hour\u2062 session, numerous respondents,\u200b including \u2062veterans with both Union and \u2063Confederate heritage, made compelling arguments for preserving the memorial. However, commenters\u2062 argued that the memorial&#8217;s purpose is not to honor the\u2062 Confederacy but to commemorate the movement towards reunification after the Union&#8217;s victory.<\/p>\n<p>Concerns were raised \u200cabout\u2063 the precedent set by \u200ddismantling the memorial, with one \u2063commenter describing it as the &#8220;paradox of \u200ddestruction of a monument to\u2062 peace, harmony, and reconciliation.&#8221; However, others disagreed, stating that there should be no memorials to those who took up arms against the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The memorial, commissioned by former\u200b President William McKinley in 1898, was designed \u200dto foster healing from the Civil \u2064War. It allowed for the reinterment of over 400 Confederate veterans in graves \u200dforming concentric circles around the memorial. The memorial&#8217;s webpage \u2064acknowledges that \u200cit presents a nostalgic and mythologized vision of the Confederacy, including sanitized depictions of slavery.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2062memorial features a statue of a woman representing\u2063 the &#8220;American South,&#8221; surrounded\u2062 by shields representing the Confederate states and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/texas-attorney-general-to-sue-biden-admin-over-illegal-deportation-freeze\/\" title=\"Texas Attorney General to Sue Biden Admin Over \u201cIllegal Deportation Freeze\u201d\">border states<\/a>. The pedestal includes engravings of 32 \u2062figures, including two slaves, and \u200can inscription that pays \u2063tribute to\u200d the idea of the Southern \u2064states&#8217; war \u200bas a &#8220;lost cause.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Arlington Cemetery\u2064 sought \u200dalternatives to\u2064 the memorial&#8217;s removal but instructed commenters \u200cnot to call for no \u2062action. Many commenters\u200d argued that\u2062 removing the memorial would be both illegal and disrespectful to those buried at Arlington.
