This inflation is hitting lower-income Americans the hardest.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) introduced updated nutritional guidelines for federal food stamp benefits during the Biden administration. As a result, \u2063the Supplemental Assistance Nutrition Program (SNAP) expanded by approximately \u200c27 percent compared to its pre-pandemic scale.<\/p>\n<p>The Foundation for Government Accountability (FGA) conducted a study, which estimates that per-capita food stamp spending\u2064 grew by over 90 percent\u200c between December 2019 and \u2064March 2023. Republicans have been advocating for curbing food stamp spending, while Democrats have urged them not to do so.<\/p>\n<p>While the \u2064White House and the USDA \u200bhave not responded to the FGA&#8217;s findings,\u2062 the \u2062White House \u2062recently \u2064issued a note authored by the Council \u2063of Economic Advisors (CEA) about\u200b grocery inflation \u200cin the nation. The note attributes &#8220;higher than normal&#8221;\u2064 grocery\u2062 inflation to various factors such as pandemic-induced\u2062 shifts in food demand, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/thanks-to-inflation-back-to-school-prices-expected-to-skyrocket\/\" title=\"Thanks To Inflation, Back-To-School Prices Expected To Skyrocket\">global supply chain bottlenecks<\/a>, and unforeseen supply shocks.<\/p>\n<h2>Getting to &#8216;At \u200cLeast\u200d 15 Percent&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>The FGA based its calculations on USDA data on monthly food stamp enrollment and \u200bexpenditures, monthly resident population totals from\u2064 the U.S. Department\u2064 of Commerce, and World Bank estimates of the impact on\u200d grocery prices for each percentage point increase in per capita food stamp spending.<\/p>\n<p>According to \u2063the World \u2063Bank study, a 1 percent increase in benefits per population causes a moderate and\u200d persistent increase in grocery store prices \u200cof 0.08 percent. Inflation data from the U.S.\u200c Labor Department shows that between December 2019 and March \u20642023,\u200b the &#8220;food at home&#8221; price index (a \u2064proxy for grocery store prices) rose by roughly 24.3 percent.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2062FGA report estimates that \u200dfood \u200bstamp spending hikes could account for\u2063 at least two-thirds\u2062 of that increase, which aligns with the \u200bestimated 15 percent increase in grocery prices caused\u2064 by \u200dfood stamp spending. \u200dSome individual food item prices, such as margarine and eggs, have risen even faster during this period.<\/p>\n<h2>Food \u2064Stamp\u2064 Spending Soars<\/h2>\n<p>The FGA report also highlights a\u200b significant increase in overall expenditures on\u2062 the \u2064food stamp benefit program between 2019 and 2022. The funding\u2063 allocation more \u200bthan doubled from $4.5 billion in 2019 to $11 billion in 2022. While \u200b<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/food-stamp-spending-expansion-blamed-for-15-percent-grocery-price-inflation\/\" title=\"Food stamp spending increase blamed for 15% rise in grocery prices.\">pandemic-related emergency allotments contributed<\/a> to some of the\u200b spending increase, most of it came from permanent benefit increases.<\/p>\n<p>According \u2062to the\u200b non-partisan \u200cCongressional Budget Office (CBO), the food stamp program is projected to cost taxpayers a total of $1.1 trillion over the next decade. The FGA estimates\u200b that the food stamp program expansion\u200b itself, which \u200dbypassed Congress, accounts for around $250 billion of that \u200bcost.<\/p>\n<p>Although grocery \u200cinflation has eased in recent \u2062months, it remains a significant concern.
