Reed also alleged that the\u200c clinic did not\u200d make sure\u200d children and their families were fully aware of the side effects, some of which are serious.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, emergency room staff at the hospital started seeing a spike \u2064in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/does-gender-affirming-care-for-trans-kids-actually-prevent-suicide-heres-what-the-data-say\/\" title=\"Does \u2018Gender-Affirming Care\u2019 For Trans Kids Actually Prevent Suicide? Here\u2019s What The Data Say\">trans-identifying children<\/a> showing up every day in \u2062psychiatric\u200c crisis, The New \u200bYork Times\u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/08\/23\/health\/transgender-youth-st-louis-jamie-reed.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The children were \u200btaking hormones but not receiving the therapy \u200bthey needed, emergency room doctors warned.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The clinic\u2019s nurse, wrote\u2064 in an email obtained by the \u2062Times that emergency\u2064 room staffers \u201caren\u2019t sure why patients aren\u2019t required to continue in counseling if they \u2063are continuing hormones\u201d and were concerned that \u201cno\u200b one is ever told no.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3>Spike in Trans-Identifying Children Seeking Services<\/h3>\n<p>In recent years, the clinic saw a huge spike in trans-identifying children asking for \u2062services. By 2021, four or \u2063five new patients were calling the clinic every\u200b day, up from 2018 when the clinic would only see four or five new\u200c patients a month. About 73% of\u200c those new patients were girls, according to internal documents reported by the Times.<\/p>\n<p>As the clinic became overwhelmed,\u200b it started relying on outside \u2062therapists, some of whom did not have much experience\u2063 in gender issues,\u2063 to\u200d determine\u2064 whether children were psychologically fit\u2063 for puberty blockers or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/very-complicated-dr-rachel-levine-dodges-sen-pauls-issue-about-sex-adjustments-for-children\/\" title=\"\u2018Very Complicated\u2019: Dr. Rachel Levine Dodges Sen. Paul\u2019s Issue About Sex Adjustments For Children\">cross-sex hormones<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some children with red \u200cflags in their medical histories <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/08\/23\/health\/transgender-youth-st-louis-jamie-reed.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">were put<\/a> on gender hormone regimens, the\u2064 Times \u2064reported. Some\u200c of those patients later stopped identifying \u2064as transgender \u200cand did not receive any support from the clinic afterwards.<\/p>\n<p>Reed and the clinic\u2019s nurse together kept a \u200dprivate \u201cred flag list\u201d of 60 patients with complex psychiatric diagnoses, a changing sense of gender, or\u2062 complicated family situations. One patient on testosterone stopped taking their schizophrenia medication,\u2062 one was known to hallucinate, and one had been in \u2064a psychiatric unit for five months.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2064 also kept track of 16 patients who\u2062 had detransitioned, meaning they changed \u200dtheir gender identity again \u200cor stopped taking hormones, the Times\u200d said.<\/p>\n<p>One \u200capparently female patient emailed the clinic to \u200dsay she had detransitioned and asked for a voice coach for her masculinized voice as well as\u2062 an autism screening. \u200cAnother\u200d patient ended up regretting her mastectomy and asked for a breast reconstruction, but she had not received a reply, according to emails between clinic staff. Another patient posted a warning about the clinic on Reddit after \u2063she was put on testosterone around the same \u200btime she was being treated for bipolar disorder and anxiety. She told the Times\u2064 that \u201coverall, there was a major lack of care and\u2063 consideration for me\u201d at the clinic.<\/p>\n<h3>Investigations and Concerns Over Gender Treatments<\/h3>\n<p>After the original whistleblower allegations from Reed, the former case manager, Missouri\u2019s Republican attorney general opened\u2062 an investigation into \u2064the clinic. That investigation remains ongoing.<\/p>\n<p>Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO)\u2062 also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawley.senate.gov\/hawley-outlines-investigation-washington-university-transgender-center-st-louis-childrens-hospital\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">launched<\/a> an investigation into the clinic that is ongoing.<\/p>\n<p>An internal investigation by Washington \u200dUniversity, which is affiliated with St. Louis\u2062 Children\u2019s Hospital, <a href=\"https:\/\/missouriindependent.com\/2023\/04\/21\/washington-university-says-allegations-against-transgender-center-are-unsubstantiated\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found<\/a> Reed\u2019s claims were \u201cunsubstantiated.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Risks of Gender \u200bHormone Treatments and Surgeries<\/h3>\n<p>Over the last few\u2063 years, critics have sounded\u2063 the alarm about the permanent effects of both gender hormone treatments and surgical procedures, especially on children.<\/p>\n<p>Both puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones \u200ccome with serious health \u200crisks.\u2063 Puberty blockers\u200b can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/gender-dysphoria\/in-depth\/pubertal-blockers\/art-20459075\">affect<\/a> bone growth and density and cause sexual\u200b dysfunction, voice damage,\u200d and infertility, among other issues. Cross-sex hormones\u200b can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/transgender-young-people-in-u-s-have-nearly-doubled-recently-report-shows\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cause<\/a> infertility, deadly \u200cblood \u200dclots,\u200c heart attacks, increased cancer risks \u2062of the breasts and ovaries, liver dysfunction, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/transgender-young-people-in-u-s-have-nearly-doubled-recently-report-shows\/\" title=\"Transgender Young People In U.S. Have Nearly Doubled Recently, Report Shows\">worsening psychological illness<\/a>, and other serious conditions.<\/p>\n<p>The number of gender surgeries nearly tripled \u2064in the U.S. from 2016 to 2019, according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2808707?utm_source=For_The_Media&#038;utm_medium=referral&#038;utm_campaign=ftm_links&#038;utm_term=082323\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">analysis<\/a> published Wednesday in JAMA Network Open. In 2016, there were \u2064about 4,550 procedures,\u200b and\u2063 that number spiked to around 13,000 in\u2062 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds \u200cof teen girls in the\u200d U.S., some as young as 12, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medpagetoday.com\/pediatrics\/generalpediatrics\/101252?xid=nl_mpt_DHE_2022-10-17&#038;eun=g394940d0r&#038;utm_source=Sailthru&#038;utm_medium=email&#038;utm_campaign=Daily%20Headlines%20Evening%202022-10-17&#038;utm_term=NL_Daily_DHE_dual-gmail-definition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have gotten<\/a> elective, gender-related double\u2064 mastectomies to remove their healthy breasts over the last few years.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, it is more popular than ever for youth to adopt new gender identities. An estimated 300,000 minors aged 13 to 17 <a href=\"https:\/\/williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu\/press\/transgender-estimate-press-release\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">identified<\/a> as transgender as of last \u2064year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Children&#8217;s Hospital, expressed concern about the lack of boundaries for trans-identifying patients seeking hormone treatments.
