new front in the culture war on &#8220;fatphobia.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Fady Shanouda is an associate professor at the Feminist Institute\u2062 of Social Transformation at Carleton University \u2062who \u200cspecializes in &#8220;fat studies&#8221; and \u200b&#8221;fatphobia.&#8221; On Monday, the \u2063fat professor wrote about the new hype around Ozempic, a type 2 diabetes medication \u200dbeing\u200c prescribed \u200coff-label to induce\u200b weight loss, perpetuating the &#8220;harmful idea of \u200ca \u200bfuture without fat.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is steeped in fat-hatred that \u2062could further damage \u200bour\u200d relationships to \u200dour bodies and food,&#8221; Shanouda explained. &#8220;The language used around Ozempic is\u200b about ending \u2064the so-called &#8216;obesity epidemic.&#8217; The very description is laced with the idea of eradicating \u200cfat people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Shanouda went\u2063 on to note \u2063that\u2063 Ozempic fails to &#8220;cure obesity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Certain users of the drug have lost significant weight, but they will \u200cneed to\u200c take this \u2064costly \u200cmedication in perpetuity,&#8221; the professor wrote.<\/p>\n<p>In May, The Wall Street Journal titled their coverage of the new medication with the\u2064 headline &#8220;Obesity Could Be Pharma&#8217;s Biggest Blockbuster Yet.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Patient testimonies have focused not only on the dramatic effect on their waistlines, but also on how quickly many seem to pack the pounds back on if they stop taking the injections,&#8221; the Journal reported. &#8220;That may not be ideal for patients,\u2062 but for Wall Street it is a feature rather\u200c than a bug.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to \u200dShanouda, however, the\u2062 primary problem with Ozempic extends\u200c to the drug&#8217;s use to eliminate obesity in the \u2064first place.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In a world marked by scientific uncertainty, the promise of &#8216;a cure&#8217; \u200cas a \u200cmagic elixir is the ultimate expression of science vanquishing the bad enemy,&#8221; Shanouda wrote.\u2064 &#8220;Drugs such as Ozempic can be understood as a form of &#8216;pre-emptive obesity \u200dbiopolitics,&#8217; a term used by\u2063 United Kingdom geographer, Bethan Evans, to describe policy interventions that seek \u2064in the present to prevent fat futures.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The blog post follows New \u2062York City Mayor Eric Adams declaring obesity a protected class in\u2062 May.<\/p>\n<h3>The Public Health Crisis \u200dof\u2064 Our Time<\/h3>\n<p>Obesity, meanwhile, a symptom of a toxic \u200cdiet, remains the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/oregon-governor-encourages-people-to-call-police-on-neighbors-violating-covid-orders\/\" title=\"Oregon Governor Encourages People To Call Police On Neighbors Violating COVID Orders\">public health crisis<\/a> of our \u2063time. People who are obese are at higher risk\u200c of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-year-of-living-fearfully\/\" title=\"The Year of Living Fearfully\">high blood pressure<\/a>,\u2063 diabetes, heart \u200cdisease, stroke, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea, and many types\u2063 of cancer, just \u200bto name a few.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Centers \u200bfor\u2064 Disease Control \u2064(CDC), 1 in 3 American adults 18 and older were considered \u2064categorically obese in \u20622021. The CDC reported that nearly 1 in 5 children aged 2-19 \u200bwere already obese between 2017 and 2020. Harvard researchers estimated before the coronavirus lockdowns \u200bthat roughly \u200dhalf the American population will become obese \u200dby the end of the\u2064 decade.<\/p>\n<p>A study \u200bfrom the University of Colorado Boulder published in February found that \u200bpeople \u200bwho are obese are\u200d up to 91 percent more likely to face an early death. Obesity, in\u200b the meantime, lowers quality of life, jeopardizes fertility, and hampers military readiness.
