The Youth Justice Lab\u2019s<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/law.stanford.edu\/education\/only-at-sls\/law-policy-lab\/practicums-2020-2021\/the-youth-justice-lab-imagining-an-anti-racist-public-education-system-law-808a\/\"><span>website<\/span><\/a> <span>designates the American public school system as an institution that \u201cperpetuate[s] anti-Black racism, white supremacy, and discrimination.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cNo institution has reproduced racial hierarchy in the U.S. more than our public education system,\u201d the website reads.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The policy operation will design policy and research \u201cinterventions\u201d that aim to \u201cdismantle the systemic racism and interlocking oppressions built into those educational policies and practices.\u201d The hub takes specific problems with \u201chigh-stakes\u201d standardized testing for student placement.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The University of California system has already eradicated SAT and ACT requirements for applicants. According to<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/education\/university-california-system-drops-sat-act-requirements-applicants-n1212561\"><span>NBC<\/span><\/a><span>, the university system dropped the standardized testing for in-state freshmen applicants until 2024. The Youth Justice Lab will likely encourage other schools to drop standardized testing as well.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On the Youth Justice Lab\u2019s website, the center designates classes for students with disabilities and advanced placement courses as a form of segregation.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cFrom state-sponsored racial segregation of schools to the more subtle, but no less insidious racially segregated academic placements (e.g., special education, advanced placement) to exclusionary school discipline policies, to ostensibly \u2018meritocratic\u2019 testing and grading policies,\u201d the website reads.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Boston Public Schools have already nixed new advanced classes citing lower enrollment due to the coronavirus pandemic and racial \u201cequity\u201d problems.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Daily Wire<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/boston-public-schools-will-suspend-advanced-classes-because-too-many-students-in-them-are-white-or-asian\"><span>reported<\/span><\/a><span>:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em><span>New fifth and sixth graders will not be accepted into advanced classes in Boston for the next year, the entry test is being suspended due to the pandemic, while at the same time the school district has raised concerns about racial \u201cequity\u201d problems, noting a vast majority of students in those classes are white or Asian.&nbsp;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>Stanford partnered with Public Counsel \u2014 the world\u2019s largest pro bono public interest legal firm \u2014 and IntegrateNYC, a youth-led activist group that calls for increased social justice programming in schools, to create the research center.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The overarching goal of the new center is to \u201ccritically analyze\u201d the alleged structural racism in schools and ask, \u201cwhat would an anti-racist public education look like?\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Activists have given parents an inside look at what an \u201canti-racist\u201d public education would look like for children. Oregon\u2019s Department of Education sent out an 82-page instructional guide detailing how asking students to show their work in math class is a form of white supremacy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/asking-students-to-show-their-work-in-math-class-is-a-form-of-white-supremacy\"><span>guide<\/span><\/a><span>, actions that allegedly perpetuate white supremacy include asking students to show their work, focusing on getting the right answer, tracking student success, and grading students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Other anti-racist educators have suggested that grading student\u2019s writing is a form of racism and white supremacy as well. An Associate Dean at Arizona State University<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/arizona-state-dean-grading-writing-based-on-quality-is-racist-promotes-white-language-supremacy\"><span>encouraged<\/span><\/a> <span>teachers to ditch grading for a \u201clabor-based\u201d grading system wherein students earn grades based on their effort.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
