There&#8217;s a \u2062lot\u200d of old people here. And \u200dI think I know \u200bsome of them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Classmates Patty Lewis, youthful-looking in a short-sleeve \u200dshirt and denim, \u2062and Kathy Weishaupt, friendly and cheerful,\u200c would be among her\u200c peers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"shortcode\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-placeholder\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>And there would be \u2063others\u2014about 60 \u200cclassmates\u2014down around 42 from an original graduating class of \u2063108, the inevitable\u200c result of life and time passing.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. McGruder thanked social media for\u200c helping organizers bring her classmates together in the spirit of friendship.<\/p>\n<p>The graduates held their \u206360th reunion dinner \u200das a class the night before.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve kept in\u200d touch\u2064 with several \u200cof my high school friends that\u2062 I wouldn&#8217;t have\u2063 [without social media],&#8221; Ms. McGruder said. &#8220;So it&#8217;s\u200d good.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Damaging Effects<\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;Do I think it&#8217;s damaging? \u2063Yes, sir. It&#8217;s very damaging,&#8221; she said of\u2063 social media \u200din general. &#8220;It&#8217;s damaging to the young kids. They&#8217;re going to stick their noses \u200din this [cell phone], they&#8217;re going to get lost in games.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Some graduates may even decide not \u2062to attend large gatherings like the \u200cannual Fallon\/Churchill County reunion, and stay in touch with\u200c their classmates on social media.<\/p>\n<p>Only a few of the 106 \u200cgraduating members\u2063 of the Class of 2013 at Churchill County High attended Aug. 19&#8217;s community-wide event.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Like six people showed up\u2014yeah, really sad,&#8221;\u2062 said Kelsey Harriman, \u200bClass of 2012, helping her friend Darcy Tedford set up \u200bthe Class of 2013 tent.<\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-left:0;margin-right:0;max-width:1200px\">\n<figure style=\"width:640px;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto\" class=\"alignnone\"><figcaption>Two former classmates \u2063of Churchill County High\u200c School greet during \u200bthe annual community-wide class reunion in \u2064Fallon, Nev.,\u200d on Aug.\u200c 19, \u200d2023. (Allan\u200d Stein\/The Epoch Times)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As Ms. Harriman sees it, people are busy with their lives and careers, and social\u200d media helps them \u2064stay \u200cin the loop.<\/p>\n<p>The problem\u2064 is that while the younger graduates may &#8220;think they&#8217;re connected&#8221; on social media, \u200d&#8221;they&#8217;re not.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Missing from\u2062 the equation is that \u2064intimate connection\u2014what singer-songwriter Bruce Springsteen called \u200c&#8221;that human touch.&#8221; People still want to laugh, shake hands, embrace, and reminisce in person.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think as we age, we&#8217;ll want to\u2062 connect more in person and not from\u2064 a social media aspect,&#8221; Ms.\u2062 Harriman told The Epoch Times.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Social media is convenient for now, but I don&#8217;t think maintaining relationships \u200dis realistic.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yet, despite the inroads\u200d of social media and \u2062temporary setbacks like COVID-19\u2014which canceled many alumni gatherings in \u200c2020\u2014the annual tradition of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/she-hulk-attorney-at-law-review-a-show-that-exposes-all-the-flaws-of-progressive-screenwriting\/\" title=\"\"She-Hulk Attorney At Law\" Review: A Show That Exposes All The Flaws Of Progressive Screenwriting\">high school reunion<\/a> continues on.<\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-left:0;margin-right:0;max-width:1200px\">\n<figure style=\"width:640px;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto\" class=\"alignnone\"><figcaption>Classmates from the 1950s reminisce at the \u200c9th annual Fallon\/Churchill County Reunion in Fallon, Nev., \u2062on Aug. 19, 2023. I don&#8217;t want to do this virtually or online. I \u200bwant to dance\u2062 with them again.\u2064 I want to reminisce with\u2063 them\u2014drink with them, face to face again,&#8221; said Dr. Markus Pfeiffer, a communications professor and social media researcher at Regent University in Virginia.<\/p>\n<p>He said social media allows\u2064 classmates to stay connected in \u200bcyberspace, transcending time, distance, hotels, and other travel costs. Social media has\u2063 also\u2063 been beneficial in finding classmates in certain classes, Dr. Pfeiffer told \u2064The Epoch Times.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s \u200cbecoming a search tool\u2014not \u200cjust Google. Social media \u2064is becoming a search tool for long-lost classmates\u200b and integrating them again and inviting them,&#8221;\u2062 he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They are connected on Facebook, Linked In, and Instagram. They see each other\u200b daily or weekly [virtually or online], what their classmates do \u200cif they want to \u2062stay in touch with them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>&#8216;Double-Edge Sword&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>However, social media can be\u200b a double-edge sword, Dr. \u2063Pfeiffer said.<\/p>\n<p>While social\u200d media can bring people together in virtual reality, it can give them a reason not \u200cto attend social events like high school reunions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People&#8217;s interests change. People&#8217;s relationships change. Friends they had in high school may have faded\u2064 away, and there&#8217;s less desire to see these people,&#8221; Dr. Pfeiffer said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As the years \u2063go on, there is a \u200clittle bit of a fading of that \u2064interest. But the people who value these relationships will continue.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t think the\u200b high school reunion is \u200ddead, but it is certainly changing in terms of the influence of social\u2063 media. (Allan Stein\/The Epoch Times)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>And there are\u200c many \u2062reasons for staying away, ranging from physical appearance as we age to encountering former \u2063classmates who may have mistreated us in high school to not\u200c measuring up to \u200bour dreams and \u2062expectations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;On the other hand, high school\u2062 reunions can be\u2062 eye-opening. We usually\u200d develop maturity and wisdom as we age,&#8221; according\u200b to Psychology Today.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Encountering our former classmates and recalling old\u200b memories, \u200dgood and \u200dbad, may help us gain better insight into who we are now and how we\u200b got\u2062 here.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Fred Miller, Class of 1978 at Churchill County High, laughs \u2064at how his classmates voted\u200c him\u200c most\u2062 likely not to reach 50\u2014&#8221;and I&#8217;ll \u200dbe 63 on\u2064 Tuesday.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Every day&#8217;s a blessing,&#8221;\u2064 Mr. Miller\u200c said, born and raised in Fallon, conversing with former classmates under the small &#8220;Class of 78&#8243;\u2062 tarp at Oats Park.<\/p>\n<h2>Life Choices<\/h2>\n<p>What becomes of \u200dus after high school is primarily a matter of our\u200c choices. So Fred Miller \u2063became a tungsten carbide worker at a local factory and\u200d remained there for the next \u206339 years until he retired at age 59.<\/p>\n<p>He makes it a point to stay in\u2063 touch with former classmates on \u2062social media. At the same time, he enjoys meeting former\u200c classmates in person and\u200c catching up on old times.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We all connect on \u2062social media. But\u2064 then, we\u200b like to\u200d meet here and see everybody. That&#8217;s the thing \u2064with us,&#8221; Mr. Miller told The Epoch Times.<\/p>\n<p>This year, the Class of &#8217;78 celebrated with a 45-year reunion in person. The annual \u200bcounty-wide reunion allows \u2064people to\u200d meet and interact across generations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I like that\u2064 they do it for all the classes here,&#8221; Mr. \u200cMiller said. &#8220;You get to \u200csee people you don&#8217;t see [otherwise.] \u200c My dad\u200b was Class of\u2062 &#8217;60.&#8217; They meet\u2063 elsewhere because\u200c most like to be in bed by 6 p.m.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-left:0;margin-right:0;max-width:1200px\">\n<figure style=\"width:640px;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto\" class=\"alignnone\"><figcaption>A member of the Class of 1983 at Churchill County High\u2064 School puts up a banner during the annual community reunion \u200bin Fallon, Nev., \u200don Aug. 19, 2023. (Allan Stein\/The Epoch Times)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Mr. Miller is\u2062 also proud that\u2063 he \u2062wasn&#8217;t\u200d one of those classmates who \u200c&#8221;peaked&#8221;\u2063 in high school.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I peaked\u2062 well after high\u200d school. I was still in my 20s when I started\u2064 getting good at \u2064cross-country running. I was all of 140 pounds too. That&#8217;s not the case anymore.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Like sea turtles\u200d returning to the place where they were born, many high school\u200b graduates \u200cat the Fallon\/Churchill \u200dCounty reunion needed to meet and commune once again \u200bin person\u2014perhaps for \u2064the last time.<\/p>\n<p>On the\u2064 whole, a high \u200cschool class of 330 seniors loses three\u200b people by their 10-year\u2063 reunion, according to\u2062 Fox Business.<\/p>\n<p>The number \u2062increases to seven by the \u206220-year reunion, 15\u200b by the 30-year\u200b reunion, and 70 by the 50-year milestone reunion.<\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-left:0;margin-right:0;max-width:1200px\">\n<figure style=\"width:640px;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto\" class=\"alignnone\"><figcaption>Class of\u200b 1973 alumni Kathie Hull (R) and Don Ellis (2nd R) enjoy personal time\u2064 with former classmates at \u2062a community-wide reunion in\u200d Fallon, Nev., on\u200c Aug. 19,\u2062 2023. (Allan Stein\/The Epoch Times)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Long before \u200bthere was a community-wide\u2064 reunion, the graduates of Churchill County High, built in 1917, held separate class gatherings once every five or 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>The community later decided to\u2062 have an even more significant, unified event, representing \u2064many classes in one location, where the public could visit and learn about\u200d the long and rich history of Churchill County High\u2014home of the\u200d Greenwave.<\/p>\n<p>Notable alumni include\u2063 Harvey Dahl, the\u200b St. Louis Rams football offensive guard, and Alan Bible, a \u2062prominent lawyer\u200b and U.S. Senator from Nevada from 1954 to 1974.<\/p>\n<p>The Churchill Reunion Committee was the driving \u200bforce behind the effort, organizing the first community-wide reunion in 2014. The event has since\u2063 blossomed to include\u200c live musical performances, car shows, and a breakfast for\u200c all participating classes.<\/p>\n<p>The committee ran the \u2062event for several years, and later, \u200bthe city of Fallon \u2062took on the\u2063 responsibility.<\/p>\n<h2>Value of Social Media<\/h2>\n<p>Theresa Guillen, \u200bClass \u200dof 1984 and chairman of the Churchill Arts Council, said \u200csocial media is crucial in ensuring yearly reunions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think it&#8217;s \u2063a great connector. I stay in better touch with\u200b my classmates,&#8221; Mrs. Guillen told The Epoch Times. &#8220;Being a small community, you know the parents, the grandparents,\u2063 the class ahead \u2064of\u200c you, or the\u2062 class behind you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Sadly, beyond 1983 and the lower classes, we don&#8217;t \u2062have as much attendance,&#8221;\u200c Mrs. Guillen said.<\/p>\n<p>But \u2062as former classmates get older, &#8220;you appreciate those relationships and\u2063 want to get together as you start losing classmates. Then, we make\u2063 that effort.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Guillen also views social media \u200das a tool for planning \u2064and finding classmates dispersed far and wide.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s\u200b a great community-wide spirit here. Quite a few people live local, \u2062but quite a few make the trip from out of town,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Honestly, it helps overall. I would\u2063 hate to say \u200cit took the place of coming out [in person], seeing each other in\u200d person.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, the city called off the \u2063county-wide reunion due to\u200b COVID-19, but\u2063 &#8220;people were \u200cjust ready to get out&#8221; the following year, Mrs. Guillen \u200dsaid.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I do believe there\u2063 were some people here in masks. (Allan Stein\/The Epoch Times)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>According to GroupTravel.com, the most popular month to hold class reunions \u2062is \u200bJuly at 23 percent, August at 21 percent, and June and October at 12\u2062 percent.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Summer, as expected, had the\u2064 highest number of class reunions. The weather is nicer, it&#8217;s easier to travel, and\u2063 outdoor activities can be planned,&#8221; the company\u2064 said on its\u200b website.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Planning a reunion in the summer is also practical for classmates with families that can only vacation\u200d during this time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The \u2063company noted that more than\u2064 60 percent of former\u2063 classmates reside in their\u200d home state, which helps to locate people\u200b when planning class reunions.<\/p>\n<p>At the Fallon\/Churchill County reunion on Aug. 19, former classmates hailed near\u2063 and far and up and down the years\u2014from the 1950s \u2064to the Class of 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Each class had a tent set\u2064 up and tables\u2063 filled with yearbooks and other memorabilia capturing the year&#8217;s fleeting spirit.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was not\u200b hard for me\u200d to get here,&#8221; said Darcy \u200dTedford, Class of 2013, who flew in \u200cfrom Texas and works in education.<\/p>\n<h2>Hugs\u2064 Are Better<\/h2>\n<p>Even at her tender age, Ms. \u2062Tedford sees positive value in the physical high school reunion\u2014meeting and sharing with her\u200c former classmates in\u2064 person as opposed to virtual reality.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I \u2062don&#8217;t think [reunions will fade away] in a\u2064 community like \u200dours,&#8221; she told The Epoch Times. &#8220;People will always want to stay in touch.
