A\u200d radical suggestion, I know.<\/p>\n<p>The background here is that under the leadership of President Kevin Roberts, Heritage\u200b has been saved from irrelevance by focusing less on\u2063 what \u200bestablishment neocon Beltway elites think is important and more on what \u200bordinary\u2062 Americans\u200c actually want. And one of \u2062the things they want is for \u2064Congress\u200d to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/08\/04\/politics\/cnn-poll-ukraine\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-heritage-foundation-suggested-we-form-a-ukraine-strategy-the-neocons-lost-their-minds\/\" title=\"Heritage Foundation: Suggesting Ukraine Strategy, Neocons Go Crazy.\">stop pouring taxpayer dollars<\/a>\u200b into \u200cUkraine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-669938102\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-344f87f5b1590ab60bfae09e4c232d01 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-344f87f5b1590ab60bfae09e4c232d01\"><\/div>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/opinion\/international\/4149293-congress-must-not-hold-hurricane-funds-hostage-for-more-ukraine-war-money\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an op-ed last week<\/a>, Roberts noted this as part of a \u200cpointed criticism of an underhanded\u2064 White House plan to force another \u200bround of aid to Ukraine into a \u200d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/senate-gop-blocks-covid-funding-over-fight-to-keep-trump-era-immigration-rules\/\" title=\"Senate GOP Blocks COVID Funding Over Fight To Keep Trump-Era Immigration Rules\">supplemental funding bill<\/a> that would add money to \u200bFEMA\u2019s depleted Disaster Relief Fund (DRF). Roberts \u2064rightly \u2062says this is \u2062a dirty \u2064trick designed to pressure Republicans to\u2063 support more aid \u200dto Ukraine by\u200d tying it to aid\u2062 for hurricane and wildfire victims.<\/p>\n<p>Then this\u2064 week, \u200dHeritage posted a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Heritage\/status\/1694012835842375809?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">couple of ads<\/a> making the \u200dentirely fair point that every American\u2064 has now sent more \u2062money to\u2062 Ukraine than to\u2064 the victims of\u200c the Maui\u200b fires. One of those ads argued that \u2062until\u200d the \u200cBiden administration comes up with a \u2063plan to end \u2064the war, Congress shouldn\u2019t approve \u2064another cent of aid. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"> <span class=\"CTusbY\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Until Joe \u200dBiden offers a plan to end the\u2062 war in Ukraine, Congress\u2063 shouldn\u2019t approve another cent. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/E0oWOkm5vW\">pic.twitter.com\/E0oWOkm5vW<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Heritage Foundation (@Heritage) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Heritage\/status\/1694110211131515110?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 22, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/span> <\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Reasonable\u2063 people can disagree about how much support Americans owe the\u200d Ukrainians in their struggle against Russia. But even\u200c if one accepts that \u200cwe\u2063 should \u200cbe supporting\u2062 Ukraine to the hilt, it\u2019s fair to \u200bask \u200dwhat\u200c the plan is to end the war \u2062\u2014 and\u200d no, \u201cuntil Russia is totally defeated\u201d is\u200c not\u2064 a serious response,\u2062 much less a strategy. This\u200c war, like nearly all wars, \u2062will end\u2062 with a \u200c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/state-dept-calls-for-taliban-to-accept-peace-negotiations-amid-escalating-violence\/\" title=\"State Dept. calls for Taliban to accept peace negotiations amid escalating violence\">negotiated political settlement<\/a>. Since American taxpayers are funding the war, they deserve to\u200b know\u2063 if our leaders have a plan to end it \u2064that doesn\u2019t amount to\u200d World War III.<\/p>\n<p>As the war drags on, it seems increasingly obvious they do not have such\u200d a \u200dplan. Their only policy seems to be to keep funneling money\u2063 into Ukraine \u200bwith \u2063little\u2062 to no oversight and no strategy to \u2064forge a durable \u200bpeace settlement.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-6b60a302439e5bd9b7bb4e97cf19295a fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-6b60a302439e5bd9b7bb4e97cf19295a\"><\/div>\n<p>But for Heritage to\u2064 articulate all of \u200bthis was too much\u2062 for the neocons. \u2062As with \u2063one voice,\u2063 they denounced Heritage \u2064and invoked \u2063Ronald Reagan, declaring that Reagan is surely \u201crolling over in his grave,\u201d as both <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/marcthiessen\/status\/1694152548440039887?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Marc Thiessen<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Avik\/status\/1694155055094448551\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Avik Roy<\/a> put it. \u200cNational Review\u2019s Jay Nordlinger went a \u2062step further, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jaynordlinger\/status\/1694108941163135254?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pronouncing<\/a> that the Heritage Foundation has become a \u201cmoral\u200d obscenity.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere at NR \u2014 which unlike\u200d Heritage has not managed to escape irrelevance\u2062 \u2014 there \u200cwas an\u2063 unintentionally hilarious post from \u200dDominic \u2064Pino critiquing Heritage\u2019s position\u200d on U.S.\u2062 aid to Ukraine.\u200c Pino managed to sum up the \u200dneocon worldview in a single line, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/more-demagoguery-against-ukraine-aid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noting<\/a> that \u201cnot all the money\u2064 goes to Ukrainians. Much\u200b of it goes to U.S. defense contractors, which employ Americans and\u2064 contribute to U.S. economic \u200doutput.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ah yes, \u2063there\u2019s\u2063 nothing like \u200cbankrolling foreign \u2063wars with no end-game strategy to get the American economy going. Defense contractors are Americans too! Think about it, the Ukraine war \u200dis a \u200dU.S. jobs program!<\/p>\n<p>If any conservative of \u200cyore is rolling over in his grave\u2064 about\u2063 all this it\u2019s William F.\u200c Buckley, whose once-great \u200dmagazine apparently thinks that asking Congress to \u2062articulate \u2062realistic goals in Ukraine is somehow\u200b \u201cmorally obscene,\u201d or that bankrolling foreign wars to the tune of $113 billion (and \u200ccounting) amounts\u2063 to an industrial \u200bpolicy.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-281743f2f6a767dc7506729a2cc8465f fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-281743f2f6a767dc7506729a2cc8465f\"><\/div>\n<p>Both \u2064Buckley and\u200b Reagan were a little more prudent than that \u200dabout foreign policy, \u200cand were they alive today, they would \u2062likely be sounding \u200dthe same \u2062notes \u200cabout American aid to Ukraine as Roberts \u2064and Heritage\u2063 are sounding now. <\/p>\n<p>And in\u2062 any case, America today is\u200d not what \u200cit\u2063 was in\u200c the days of Buckley and Reagan.\u200c The Russo-Ukrainian \u2064War is not \u2062our very own\u2063 21st-century Cold War, and we can\u2019t afford to treat it as\u2062 such. (To the extent \u200bthere\u2019s a cold war out there, it\u2019s with China, not Russia, and\u2063 our ongoing enmeshment in the Ukraine conflict raises serious questions \u200babout whether we will be \u2063able, in our current state, \u2063to counter \u2063a CCP invasion of Taiwan.)<\/p>\n<p>But \u2062for the neocons, \u2064who clearly resent the loss of their \u200cinfluence over institutions like Heritage, even\u200d the mild demand\u2063 that we\u2063 tie\u2064 additional aid to Ukraine with some workable plan\u200d to bring peace \u2064and stability to the region is met \u2064with\u2063 the most \u200bhyperbolic howls of outrage. \u2063That should tell you everything you need to know about what their \u200cpriorities are and whose interests they really care about.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-e8ec973e98472595c6a543606569b362 fdrlst__b89e9-after-post-content\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-e8ec973e98472595c6a543606569b362\"><\/div>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">    \t\t\t\t\t   \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Heritage Foundation faced criticism for proposing to prioritize aid for Americans affected by natural disasters, such as the Maui wildfires, over funding the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict.
