There are many players from the\u200c NBA that \u200dwe \u2063are excited to \u200bsee,\u201d \u200dcollege student James Froilan Almeda\u200c told Reuters near championship venue Mall\u2062 of Asia Arena. \u200cThe NBA is the \u200dU.S. National Basketball Association. <\/p>\n<p>The Philippines might not \u2062clinch the \u206232-nation\u200d championship but it \u200ccan win some games, added Almeda. FIBA ranks the Philippines \u2062men\u2019s team 40th globally and the women\u2019s \u200d42nd. Spain and the United States are in the top two spots.<\/p>\n<p>Basketball first came to\u200b the Philippines in the 1910s, \u200dwhen \u200dit \u200bwas a U.S. colony. American\u200b teachers\u2064 introduced \u2064the game\u200d to the public school system, initially\u2063 just \u200dfor girls.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2063appeal\u200d of basketball endured through the\u200d decades because of its simplicity, \u200cveteran sports anchorman Sev Sarmenta\u2064 said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe \u2062love affair with basketball \u200bcontinues,\u201d he \u200ctold Reuters. \u201cI will give you a backboard \u200cright here, I will find a piece of wire,\u200c it \u200dbecomes our ring, I\u2019ll attach\u2062 it to the wall here and we can play. And it\u2019s a scene repeated many times in many \u2062streets throughout the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Basketball\u2064 also cuts across all social classes in this developing nation, where nearly half \u2064the population consider themselves to be living in poverty, a recent survey by private pollster\u2063 Social Weather Services \u2062showed.<\/p>\n<p>Jessie Conde, a \u200dregular at a court built by waste pickers in\u200d the slums of Tondo, said\u200b he always turns to basketball when things get tough at home\u2064 or at school.<\/p>\n<p>His teammates, bare-chested and barefoot, \u200btypically bet 50 pesos \u200d($1) each per game, \u200dwith the winner\u2062 often using the \u2062prize \u2062money to buy everyone refreshments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce I\u2019m \u200don the court, I\u200c forget all my \u2062problems\u201d, the 18-year-old said. At home, a statue \u200bof Jesus Christ wearing \u2062a Golden\u200d State \u200bWarriors jersey\u2063 is prominently on display.<\/p>\n<p>Even though the cheapest \u2062ticket for the World Cup costs almost half the minimum daily wage, organisers hope to\u200d smash the\u2063 record attendance of\u200c 32,616 \u2062fans that\u200d watched the 1994 FIBA World Cup \u2063finals in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Opening games \u200bthat \u200binclude the Philippine team facing the Dominican \u2064Republic will be staged at \u2063a 52,000-seat\u200d arena. Ticket \u2063prices for these early\u2063 games range \u200dfrom 249\u200c to 19,199 pesos (about $4 to $342).<\/p>\n<p>Laurah Agmata, who plays for\u2062 her school\u2019s\u200d varsity and the local community league by the train tracks in Manila\u2019s Pandacan\u2063 neighbourhood, said she was looking forward to seeing Jordan Clarkson represent the Philippines in the championship.\u200c One day, she hopes she \u2063can \u2063also play for her \u2064country like the Filipino-American NBA player\u200c who is currently with Utah Jazz.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes I get discouraged because it\u2019s
