He recently addressed the mayor of St. Louis, Tishaura Jones, regarding her proposed ordinance to ban certain types\u200b of firearms. Tracy, Office of Violence Prevention Director Wil Pinkney, and five \u2062of St. Louis\u2019s\u200b 14 aldermen\u200b to discuss \u200b&#8221;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-to-sign-executive-order-for-background-checks-on-gun-sales\/\" title=\"Biden to sign executive order for background checks on gun sales\">gun violence survivors<\/a>\u2062 and advocates&#8221; on \u200bthe same day Bailey sent his letter.<\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-left:0;margin-right:0;max-width:1200px\">\n<figure style=\"width:640px;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto\" class=\"aligncenter\"><figcaption>Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey speaks to his staff\u200d in March 2023. We\u200b come together around a shared vision: a safer, stronger St. Louis, ready to stand up for our \u200cvalues. We know Missourians are demanding state-level action to pass\u2064 measures \u2062like red-flag \u200blaws and background checks, but we are\u200b ready\u200c to try every tool available to us at the local level to\u200d protect families from gun\u200b violence,\u201d the statement quotes\u200c Mayor Jones\u200c as saying.<\/p>\n<p>Her plan includes\u200d the\u200c prohibition of &#8220;military-grade weapons,&#8221; although the statement does not provide a specific definition. It also aims to prevent \u2064the transfer or sale of \u2062guns to minors, address privately made firearms (&#8220;ghost guns&#8221;), prohibit\u200c insurrectionists and those convicted\u2064 of hate crimes from possessing guns, and\u200b prepare for the passage of \u2064Blair\u2019s Law.<\/p>\n<p>Blair\u2019s \u200cLaw is legislation that establishes \u2064charges and penalties for reckless\u2063 discharge of a \u200dfirearm. It \u200dwas named \u200bin \u200bhonor of 11-year-old Blair Shanahan Lane, who tragically lost his life to a stray bullet during Independence Day celebrations in \u20622011.<\/p>\n<p>Last July, Missouri Governor\u2063 Mike Parson vetoed legislation\u200d containing Blair\u2019s Law due\u2063 to \u2064additional \u200dprovisions, including language that could \u200bpotentially reduce\u200b penalties for possessing \u2062child pornography.<\/p>\n<h2>Bailey Questions Mayor Jones&#8217;s Motives<\/h2>\n<p>Attorney General Bailey expressed skepticism regarding Mayor Jones&#8217;s \u2062motives for the proposed weapons ban. He believes that\u200b there are already existing\u2063 tools \u2063at the local \u2062level\u2063 that\u2062 the mayor should\u2063 utilize before creating \u2063new \u2064ones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy\u2063 doesn\u2019t she go after the criminals instead of the guns? There are \u200claws on \u2063the books\u200c now to deal with violent crime in\u200b St. Louis,\u201d Bailey \u2063stated.<\/p>\n<p>According to Bailey, Missouri law\u200d only allows\u200b cities to regulate the concealed carry of \u2064firearms. All \u2062other regulations fall under the jurisdiction of the state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe\u200c people\u2019s elected representatives have already spoken on this issue by preempting local authority in state statute.\u2063 To implement\u2062 your\u200c plan would be to \u2063violate Missouri law,\u201d Bailey emphasized.<\/p>\n<p>Attorney General \u200cBailey highlighted that the Missouri Constitution requires any proposed law restricting the right to keep \u200dand bear arms to\u200b undergo &#8220;strict scrutiny&#8221; to ensure that it is narrowly focused and necessary.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Missouri&#8217;s Attorney General asserts his duty to safeguard Second Amendment rights in his state.
