[But] \u2062if you were to try\u2064 to find that same one, that&#8217;s the electric version of it, that can go up to &#8230; about $12,000.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Additionally, he said, the battery\u2019s endurance and charging will be another\u200c concern for these businesses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf there are three employees on a truck, you&#8217;re going to have \u2062to have about 50 batteries to get through the day,\u201d he said, citing a study his \u200dcompany had done.<\/p>\n<p>Another California landscaper, Arnulfo Hermosillo, who\u2063 has hands-on experience with both gas-powered and electric models, expressed his concern about the latter one\u2019s low efficiency. Work that normally takes \u2062about 45 minutes \u2063to finish using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/texas-considers-bills-against-biden-administrations-stance-on-oil-gas-and-renewables\/\" title=\"Texas Considers Bills Against Biden Administration\u2019s Stance on Oil, Gas, and Renewables\">gas-powered equipment<\/a>, Mr. Hermosillo said, takes up to two hours when using electric tools.<\/p>\n<p>Such differences\u2064 stem in part from the newer \u200dmodel&#8217;s\u2063 technology lacking the same robustness as the conventional type, Mr. Martinez said, and this shortfall could lead to small companies who don\u2019t have enough manpower and equipment to \u200close business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey&#8217;ll be having to work more just to make\u200d what they were\u2064 making, or eventually, they\u2063 may have to wise up and charge a \u2062little bit more, which is unfortunate [to customers] as well,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The ban, <a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202120220AB1346\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">initiated<\/a> in 2021 by the state Legislature, which directed the California Air Resources Board \u200c(CARB) to adopt the new regulations, is part of California\u2019s latest effort to transition toward a carbon-neutral economy. According\u2062 to the rules, \u2062portable generators are also subject to the ban starting in 2028.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>Environmental Concerns and Energy Considerations<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cSmall gas engines are not only bad for \u2063our environment and contributing to our climate crisis, they can cause asthma and other health issues \u2062for workers\u200c who \u2062use them,\u201d said then state Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez (D-San Diego), co-author of the bill, in \u2063a 2021 statement.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ww2.arb.ca.gov\/resources\/fact-sheets\/sore-small-engine-fact-sheet#:~:text=Emissions%20are%20significant,4%20hours%20of%20drive%20time.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According<\/a> to CARB, mowing for an hour \u200dwith a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/california-landscapers-worried-about-green-energy-transition\/\" title=\"California landscapers concerned about shift to green energy.\">commercial lawn mower emits smog comparable<\/a>\u2064 to driving a new light-duty passenger\u200b car for 300 miles, while leaf blowers are\u200b worse, emitting smog equivalent\u2062 to a 1100-mile journey.<\/p>\n<p>Jim Phelps, a California energy consultant, said that \u200banother concern \u200cregarding the state\u2019s aggressive transition to using batteries is that people could be underestimating the energy it takes to make\u200d and to charge those batteries versus the\u200c energy they\u2064 can supply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the things that people really need to come to terms with is in this whole clean energy \u2063revolution is how much energy we&#8217;re actually\u2063 losing by getting clean,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Mr. Phelps said that it is important to consider that the process of making a battery is not as \u201cclean\u201d as most\u2063 people think\u2014due to the heavy mining of raw\u2063 materials, like cobalt and lithium, required. While electric-powered equipment\u200b appears to be zero-emission on the consumer end of the equation, it creates a \u200bconsiderable amount of carbon emission during \u200cits making, he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Meanwhile, another landscaping business owner said that she\u2019s\u200b also worried about the practical issues of such a transition.<\/p>\n<p>Elizabeth Burns, president of\u200c Zone 24 Landscaping, located in the Los Angeles area, said that\u2062 some of \u2063the portable equipment available is not suitable for some yard work. However, dragging an extension cord through a yard to operate such equipment could damage the landscaping.
