Despite his majorities \u2063in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-great-politically-for-republicans-to-talk-arizona-election-audit\/\" title=\"Trump: 'Great Politically' for Republicans to Talk Arizona Election Audit\">national polls<\/a>, Trump is at\u2064 43.2% in Iowa\u2062 and 44.3% in New Hampshire, according to\u2063 the RealClearPolitics average.<\/p>\n<p>In the latest Des Moines Register\/NBC \u2062News poll finds that\u200b a 41%\u200c plurality wants the party to keep being led by Trump. But 31% want a new leader with different behavior and strategies and 26% say Trump was a good president but it is time to consider other possibilities.<\/p>\n<p>Those last two groups add up to a 57% majority willing to at least contemplate a post-Trump future.<\/p>\n<p>A national Ipsos\/Washington Post poll\u200d released the day of the debate\u200b found\u200d that 64% of likely Republican primary voters were considering casting their ballot for Trump compared to 51%\u200b who said the\u200b same for Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL).<\/p>\n<h3>The Challenge of Anti-Trump Republicans<\/h3>\n<p>The trouble is that anti-Trump Republicans are split between those to the right \u200bof the\u200b former president and those to the\u2064 right.<\/p>\n<p>There are also some who want a scorched-earth de-Trumpification of \u200dthe \u200bRepublican Party, not\u200d just a different \u200dnominee.<\/p>\n<p>But that alienates the soft Trump supporters that\u2062 DeSantis \u200cin particular realizes are key to actually winning the nomination.<\/p>\n<p>In January, DeSantis peaked at 31.3%\u200d when \u200bhe consolidated a large slice of Trump-skeptical GOP voters\u2063 in the aftermath of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/last-line-of-defense-jim-banks-calls-house-gop-to-regroup-to-block-bidens-agenda\/\" title=\"\u2018Last Line Of Defense\u2019: Jim Banks Calls House GOP To Regroup To Block Biden\u2019s Agenda\">disappointing midterm election<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Over time, however, Trump\u2062 was \u2062able to win back some of his soft supporters. A combination of the indictments and DeSantis\u2019s early\u200d surge revitalized a listless \u200dTrump campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Then former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie began \u2062to win over \u2062some of the Republicans looking \u200bfor a more overtly \u2064anti-Trump candidate, a lane \u200cthat\u200d former Vice President \u2064Mike Pence is now entering.<\/p>\n<p>That is more appealing to a slice of the Republican primary electorate that is especially important in New Hampshire. But it puts a ceiling on a campaign\u2019s support well short of what is needed to \u2064win \u200cthe nomination while fracturing\u2064 the coalition that can potentially beat Trump.<\/p>\n<p>In the Ipsos poll, Christie\u2019s \u200cnet favorability is minus 28 points \u2064and only 14% of likely GOP\u200d voters said they were considering voting for him.<\/p>\n<p>Entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy has started winning\u200c over primary voters seeking a younger alternative who is still mostly\u200d Trump Lite, otherwise \u2062a prime DeSantis constituency.<\/p>\n<p>If you are too pro-Trump,\u2062 however, the former president can argue that it is better to just \u2063vote for the genuine article. \u2062Elvis impersonators, for example, were not \u2063in much demand before the King\u2019s death in 1977.<\/p>\n<p>This approach also naturally limits a candidate\u2019s appeal to primary voters who want to move on from Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Ramaswamy has plus 26 net favorability in the Ipsos\u200c poll, but only 23% are actively \u2064considering voting for him. That\u2019s less than\u200d Pence\u2019s share.<\/p>\n<h3>The\u2064 Battle for a Single Trump Alternative<\/h3>\n<p>The\u2064 whole dynamic plays out amid calls for the Republican field to consolidate \u2062around a single Trump alternative.<\/p>\n<p>Polling data suggests DeSantis remains best positioned to capitalize on any Republican second thoughts \u2063about \u2064Trump despite falling far behind him.<\/p>\n<p>But the fact that DeSantis\u200b is so far behind \u2014 a national\u200d Yahoo News out this week has him trailing Trump by\u2062 40 points \u2014 has convinced\u200c other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/republican-debate-why-2024-republicans-do-the-trump-dance\/\" title=\"2024 Republicans embrace the Trump dance in debate.\">lower-polling\u2064 candidates<\/a> and some donors that the Florida governor\u2019s challenge\u200d has already failed.<\/p>\n<p>The bottom line is that either Trump or some alternative can win a majority\u200b of Republican voters.<\/p>\n<p>How any alternative positions himself against Trump is important.
