The ancient Greeks invented\u200b democracy, and in Athens many\u2064 government \u200dofficials were selected through sortition \u2014 a random lottery from a pool \u200cof candidates. In\u200b the United States, we \u2062already use a version\u200b of\u200b a lottery to\u2062 select jurors. \u200dWhat if we did the\u2064 same with \u2063mayors, governors, \u2064legislators, \u2062justices and even presidents?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWhen \u200cyou know you\u2019re \u200dpicked at random, you don\u2019t experience enough power\u2062 to be corrupted by \u2062it,\u201d Grant added. \u201cInstead, you feel a heightened sense of responsibility: <em>I did nothing to earn this, so I\u2063 need \u200bto \u200cmake sure \u200bI represent the group well.<\/em>\u201c<\/p>\n<p>If the \u200bauthor had ever examined the histories of\u200c recent lottery winners, he might rethink that claim. Lottery \u200dwinners are more likely to declare bankruptcy than the \u200caverage American within\u200d three \u2062to five years of winning, with nearly \u200ba third \u2062eventually doing so, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ngpf.org\/blog\/question-of-the-day\/question-of-the-day-what-percent-of-lottery-winners-eventually-go-bankrupt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according<\/a> to Next Gen Personal Finance.\u200c Money \u2014 like power \u2014\u200d goes to \u200bpeople\u2019s heads.<\/p>\n<p>While acknowledging random selection might \u201cdeprive\u2062 us of the chance to select a leader with distinctive skills,\u201d\u2062 Grant was\u200d clear: \u201cthat\u2019s a \u200crisk I\u2019m willing to take.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-110269db2d2046d6290b5f51a85b75a6 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-110269db2d2046d6290b5f51a85b75a6\"><\/div>\n<p>Grant made his \u201cfinal\u201d point that \u201cvoting also means no boundaries to gerrymander and no \u200bElectoral College to dispute.\u201d In other words, no\u200c more objections to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/what-is-going-on-minnesota-and-wisconsin-both-had-89-90-turnout-something-that-is-highly-unlikely\/\" title=\"What is Going On? Minnesota and Wisconsin BOTH had 89%-90% Turnout -- Something That Is Highly Unlikely\">election results<\/a>. Odd\u200d that this proposal would come two years after President Donald Trump raised \u200cconcerns over how the \u20642020 presidential election was\u2063 conducted instead of following Democrats\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/06\/13\/second-j6-hearing-criminalizes-republicans-for-election-objections-after-democrats-made-them-for-decades\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">objections<\/a> in 2001,\u200b 2005, \u200cand 2017. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead of questioning whether millions of ballots were \u200ccounted accurately, we could watch \u200dthe lottery live, just as we do with \u200bteams getting their lottery picks in the N.B.A. draft,\u201d \u200bGrant wrote. <\/p>\n<p>He \u200cwarned against using elections \u201cto\u00a0roll the dice on\u200c the hopes \u200dof finding the best\u201d candidates, \u2063as if the lottery system he proposes were not a way to \u200d\u201croll the \u200cdice\u201d \u200bon who oversees \u2064one of the largest enterprises in human history: the \u2062federal government. <\/p>\n<p>The \u200bproposal to\u200c eliminate elections altogether for the sake of \u201cdemocracy\u201d further goes to show that \u2063\u201cbad for democracy\u201d means\u200c anything <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/new-york-times-op-ed-declares-elections-bad-for-democracy-changes-headline-after-online-mockery\/\" title=\"NYT Op-Ed Claims Elections 'Harm Democracy,' Alters Title Amid Online Ridicule\">left-wing activists don\u2019<\/a>t like, from particular candidates\u200b to free speech, the Electoral \u2062College, and the U.S. Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-e82056c0011681946e2e36f5d357c387 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-e82056c0011681946e2e36f5d357c387\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>[READ:[READ:<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/10\/27\/here-is-everything-democrats-claim-is-a-threat-to-democracy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Here Is \u200bEverything Democrats\u200b Claim Is \u2018A Threat To \u2063Democracy\u2019<\/a>]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Other entries in \u200bthe Times op-ed pages have joined the pile-on too, smearing Republican\u200b leadership as antithetical \u200dto \u201cdemocracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Republican Party Is the Anti-Democracy Party,\u201d read an August 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/08\/03\/opinion\/republican-party-anti-democracy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">headline<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cInside\u200d the\u2064 Completely Legal G.O.P. Plot to Destroy American Democracy,\u201d read\u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/09\/21\/opinion\/republicans-democracy-elections-bannon.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">another<\/a> from last September. <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile\u200b leftists, who apparently have free reign \u200bto call \u200cfor completely abolishing elections, have chastized any Republicans raising concerns\u200c about election \u2062administration as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/08\/22\/the-election-denier-smear-is-the-dumbest-rhetorical-device-in-modern-politics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">election deniers<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Republicans \u2062aren\u2019t the ones who are advocating to deny Americans free and \u200cfair elections\u2063 in the name\u200b of \u201cdemocracy.\u201d Nor are\u2063 they the ones who <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/12\/03\/were-insecure-voting-processes-this-years-insurance-policy-for-democrats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">exploited<\/a> lockdown-era panic measures\u200c to\u2063 remove legal election safeguards \u200cand jeopardize confidence\u2063 in American \u200celections. It\u2019s not elections\u2062 that are \u201cbad for democracy.\u201d It\u2019s the\u2062 fight to eliminate them,\u2064 whether \u200cby dismantling election laws or siccing \u2062the \u200cfeds on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/is-xi-jinping-worried-about-leaving-china-chinese-leader-set-to-meet-president-biden-virtually\/\" title=\"Is Xi Jinping Worried About Leaving China?
