Mr. Barkin said in an interview with Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>That includes a possibility &#8220;that\u2062 inflation stays high and the economy\u200c strengthens,&#8221; Mr.\u2062 Barkin\u2063 said. &#8220;If I got convinced that inflation was remaining high and demand\u200d was giving \u2063no signal that inflation was going to come down, that would\u2063 make the \u200dcase&#8221; 8\/21\/2023<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Retail sales rose 0.7 percent in July, far more\u2064 than\u200d expected, and the economy grew at a 2.4 percent annualized rate in the second quarter, well above the level Fed officials feel would allow \u200dinflation to cool.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Barkin said the possibility of a strengthening economy meant a broader &#8220;playing field&#8221; of possibilities beyond the\u2063 Fed&#8217;s recent discussion of whether the economy might slide into a recession or achieve the so-called \u200d&#8221;soft landing&#8221; in which inflation\u2064 slows without a downturn.<\/p>\n<p>He said he would \u200cnot prejudge what \u2062the central bank should do at \u200bits meeting next month, when it is widely expected to\u200c leave its\u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/strong-us-data-makes-reacceleration-scenario-possible-feds-barkin-says\/\" title=\"Fed's Barkin says strong US data could lead to a reacceleration scenario.\">benchmark overnight interest rate unchanged<\/a> in the current \u20645.25\u200c percent-5.50 percent range. Inflation has declined in \u200drecent months, though it remains well above the Fed&#8217;s\u200d 2 percent\u200c target, and\u2064 there is data still\u2062 to come on jobs\u2064 and prices that \u2064could influence\u200c the outcome\u200d of the \u200bnext policy session.<\/p>\n<p>Officials \u200dare also discussing \u2063the degree to\u200d which the economy \u2062has fully \u200babsorbed the aggressive rate hikes \u200cdelivered by the \u200cFed since \u2062it began its monetary\u200c tightening campaign in March of 2022. Since the last policy \u200bmeeting \u200cin July, for \u200bexample,\u200c the yields on long-term and 2-year U.S. Treasuries have risen sharply, raising \u200cborrowing costs for households and businesses.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Barkin said there was nothing in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/stocks-jump-as-wall-street-cruises-to-best-day-since-january\/\" title=\"Stocks Jump as Wall Street Cruises to Best Day Since January\">recent market movements<\/a> which caused \u200dhim to think financial conditions were tightening too quickly\u200d or\u2064 in ways that\u2064 were concerning.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2064 doesn&#8217;t strike me that having\u200d a \u200c10-year rate over 4 (percent) is\u2063 somehow wildly inappropriate,&#8221; given the Fed<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>must be considered,&#8221; Barkin said.
