Foerster in Miami two months after the Supreme Court sided with another group founded by activist \u2064Edward Blum and\u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/activist-behind-us-affirmative-action-cases-sues-major-law-firms\/\" title=\"Activist sues top law firms over US affirmative action cases.\">rejected \u2064affirmative action policies<\/a> used by many colleges to increase \u200benrollment\u2064 of racial minorities.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>The federal lawsuits \u200caccused both law firms of unlawfully\u2063 discriminating against white candidates by limiting which law students could be considered for paid \u200dfellowships designed in part \u200cto help support the recruitment of people of color.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cExcluding students from\u2064 these \u2064esteemed fellowships because they \u2063are the wrong race is unfair, polarizing and illegal,\u201d <strong>Blum, \u200bwho is white, said in a statement.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A Perkins Coie spokesperson in a statement said it would defend itself, saying its commitment to promoting diversity, equity and inclusion in the legal profession was \u201csteadfast.\u201d Morrison &#038; \u2064Foerster did\u2063 not respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuits came amid an uptick in legal challenges to corporate diversity programs in\u200b the wake of the \u2063Supreme Court\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/universities-scrap-sat-scramble-to-stay-diverse-ahead-of-affirmative-action-ruling\/\" title=\"Universities Scrap SAT, Scramble To Stay Diverse Ahead Of Affirmative Action Ruling\">affirmative action ruling<\/a>, with companies including \u2063Activision Blizzard, Kellogg and Gannett now \u2062facing complaints.  \u2063    <\/p>\n<p>Perkins Coie, founded in Seattle, offers \u201cdiversity fellowships\u201d that provide\u200b stipends of $15,000 to $25,000 and paid positions as summer\u2063 associates, a position that at major law firms can lead to full-time jobs\u200b with six-figure salaries.<\/p>\n<p>Applicants must belong to\u200c \u201ca group historically underrepresented in the legal profession, including students of color, students \u2063who identify as LGBTQ+, and students with disabilities,\u201d according to Perkins Coie, which employs more than 1,200 lawyers in the United States and Asia.<\/p>\n<p>Morrison &#038; Foerster, a corporate \u200blaw firm founded in San Francisco that has more than 1,000 lawyers worldwide, has a similar program that is open to applicants who are Black, Hispanic, Native American\u200d or members of \u2062the LGBT community.<\/p>\n<p>The fellowship consists of a paid summer-associate position and a $50,000 stipend.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuits allege that by limiting eligibility based on \u2064race,\u200b the \u200cfellowships\u200b violate Section 1981 of the Civil Rights Act of \u20621866, a\u200b federal law adopted after the end of slavery brought about by the American \u200cCivil War that bars racial bias in private \u2064contracts.<\/p>\n<p>Blum\u2019s Texas-based American Alliance for Equal Rights this month filed a similar case against \u2063Atlanta-based venture capital fund Fearless Fund, alleging it unlawfully allowed only Black women to be eligible in a grant competition in violation of the contracting law.<\/p>\n<p>  (Reporting by Nate Raymond in Boston;
