Mott Children\u2019s Hospital National Poll on Children\u2019s Health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChildren are using \u2063digital devices and social media at younger ages, and\u200c parents may struggle with\u200c how to\u200c appropriately monitor use to prevent negative impacts on safety, self-esteem,\u200d social connections,\u2063 and habits that may interfere with sleep\u200c and \u2064other\u200d areas of health,\u201d\u2064 said Mott Poll co-director and Mott \u200bpediatrician Dr. Susan Woolford in a \u2063news release.<\/p>\n<h2>Harmful Effects of Social Media<\/h2>\n<p>Findings from the poll, based on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/exclusive-daily-wire-poll-most-americans-oppose-oscars-diversity-requirements\/\" title=\"EXCLUSIVE: Daily Wire Poll: Most Americans Oppose Oscars\u2019 Diversity Requirements\">nationally representative sample<\/a> of over 2,000 respondents, \u200calso\u2064 reveal that 50 \u2064percent of \u2064parents are \u2064concerned about mental health problems such as depression, suicide, stress, and anxiety associated with excessive screen\u200d use.<\/p>\n<p>Social media platforms include Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, and\u200b Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>Findings\u200d from a <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamapsychiatry\/fullarticle\/2749480\">2019 study<\/a> \u200d published \u200din\u200c JAMA Psychiatry showed preteens and teens \u2062who spent more \u200cthan three hours per day on social media had a 60 \u2062percent higher\u200b risk\u200d of\u2064 developing mental health problems. Separate research shows unhealthy scrolling is a significant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8674581\/\">source of distraction<\/a> \u200dthat can lead \u2062to addiction, which\u2064 then \u200badversely \u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7873710\/\">impacts academic performance<\/a> \u2063and fuels unrealistic expectations when kids compare themselves \u200dto \u2063popular, self-declared influencers.<\/p>\n<p>According\u200d to an \u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaleatingdisorders.org\/media-eating-disorders\">official\u200d blog<\/a> by the National Eating\u2062 Disorder Association, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/judge-compares-biden-admins-social-media-censorship-to-mafia-style-tactics-as-biden-lawyers-claim-no-proof-of-coercion\/\" title=\"Judge likens Biden administration's social media censorship to mafia tactics; Biden lawyers deny coercion evidence.\">social \u200dmedia platforms<\/a> are\u200b linked \u2062to a fixation on appearance, pressure to be muscular, and reduced body satisfaction. Social media also sets\u200c students up\u200b for cyberbullying.\u200b Fifty-nine percent of teens in the United \u200cStates say they\u2019ve been\u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/internet\/2018\/09\/27\/a-majority-of-teens-have-experienced-some-form-of-cyberbullying\/\">bullied or harassed\u2062 online<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>What\u2063 to Do<\/h2>\n<p>The back-to-school months\u200b are \u2063an excellent time to\u200c reinstate expectations and set limits that may have been lifted\u200c during \u2063the \u200dsummer months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is typical for \u200bparents to\u2062 relax those rules during the summer, but once\u2062 school starts, parents \u200band children need\u2063 to \u200bhave\u2062 a\u2064 conversation about limits on social media and screen time by setting up agreed-upon rules,\u201d Dr. Michelle Escovedo, an adolescent medicine specialist at Cedars-Sinai Guerin Children\u2019s in Los Angeles, said in \u2064a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cedars-sinai.org\/newsroom\/back-to-school-preparing-children-for-a-healthy-happy-year\/#:~:text=Parents'%20first%20step%20is%20to,%2C%20dinner%2C%20bath%20and%20bedtime.\">virtual community conversation<\/a> about the \u2062back-to-school season.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/topics\/social-media-internet\/social-media-parent-tips#:~:text=Monitor%20and%20discuss%20your%20child's%20social%20media%20use.&#038;text=As%20noted%20above%2C%20time%20limits,adult%20content%20is%20also%20recommended.\">American Psychological \u200bAssociation<\/a> (APA) recommends the following strategies to keep kids safe:<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1. Limit Screen Time<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Limit social media by utilizing available screen time settings so \u200ckids and teens learn self-control. Lack of self-control can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scirp.org\/journal\/paperinformation.aspx?paperid=126948\">lead to addiction<\/a>. Brain\u200b specialists have shown that acquiring likes, \u200bengaging \u2063with people, and \u200d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/excessive-social-media-use-is-no-1-concern-for-parents-as-kids-head-back-to-school-new-poll\/\" title=\"New poll reveals parents' top concern as kids return to school: excessive social media use.\">temporarily \u2064escaping reality trigger<\/a> the brain\u2019s reward system by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2889690\/\">releasing dopamine<\/a>, the\u200d same neurotransmitter released with other\u2064 addictions\u200b like\u200b eating and gambling.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/1081292\/social-media-addiction-by-age-usa\/\">2019 data<\/a> from\u2064 the research firm Statista show that 40 percent\u2063 of U.S. online users aged 18 to 22 reported feeling addicted to social media, with 5\u2063 percent of \u200drespondents describing themselves as\u2063 being \u201ccompletely\u201d\u2062 addicted.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>2.
