Version: 4.0.47--><p>Former Trump White House Chief of Staff Meadows asked a federal judge to block prosecutors from arresting him this week in Fulton County on charges listed in ex-President Donald Trump\u2019s sweeping Georgia racketeering indictment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbsent this Court\u2019s intervention, Mr. Meadows will be denied the protection from arrest that federal law affords former federal officials,\u201d Meadows\u2019 attorneys <a href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.gand.319225\/gov.uscourts.gand.319225.17.0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> to U.S. District Court Judge Steven Jones.<\/p>\n<p>Meadows is one of 18 co-defendants named in Trump\u2019s fourth indictment following a criminal investigation into the former president\u2019s alleged efforts to overturn the state\u2019s 2020 presidential election results.<\/p>\n<p>Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis pursued charging individuals under Georgia\u2019s RICO Act, which allows prosecutors to connect various crimes committed by multiple defendants and argue that they were working together toward a criminal goal \u2014 and were therefore part of a \u201ccriminal enterprise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, the state is set on subjecting Mr. Meadows to criminal process in Georgia as quickly as it can and without regard to his pending efforts to remove the case to federal court,\u201d Meadows\u2019s lawyer said in the filing. \u201cIn addition to threatening arrest on Friday \u2014 in advance of this court\u2019s Monday hearing \u2014 the state has also sought a scheduling order that would proceed exceptionally fast for a 19-defendant, 41-count prosecution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the indictment brought against Trump and his allies, Meadows faces charges under the state\u2019s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations statute and for soliciting an official to violate their oath of office.<\/p>\n<p>The indictment alleges that Meadows, Trump, and others \u201cunlawfully solicited, requested, and importuned\u201d Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger on January 2, 2021, citing a phone call where the former president reportedly tried to pressure the state official to find 11,780 votes.<\/p>\n<p>Meadows denied any wrongdoing in assisting Trump\u2019s efforts to challenge the election results.<\/p>\n<p>Meadows asked Willis for \u201ca modest extension of that [Friday at Noon] deadline,\u201d adding he had hoped to \u201cbe prepared to meet and confer \u2026 immediately following the federal court hearing\u2014which is scheduled for less than one business day after the current deadline\u201d to \u201cdiscuss the best path forward based on the outcome of the hearing, including a prompt voluntary surrender in Fulton County, if appropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Willis denied the request on Tuesday morning and \u201cmade clear that she would arrest Mr. Meadows before this Court\u2019s hearing if he does not agree to bond terms and voluntarily surrender.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am not granting any extensions. I gave 2 weeks for people to surrender themselves to the court.
