I think President Trump is going to be the Republican nominee. The only reason that [Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel] and company wants him on stage and the other candidates want them on stage is because they want \u2062America to watch. I mean, you&#8217;re talking 30, 40, \u200d50 points,&#8221; Mr. Patel added,\u200c describing President Trump&#8217;s lead over other Republican\u2062 candidates in the field.<\/p>\n<p>President Trump similarly cited his polling lead when he announced\u2064 on his Truth Social media account on Sunday that he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntd.com\/trump-confirms-he-will-skip-first-gop-presidential-debate_937438.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">would \u2064not attend the Aug. 23 debate<\/a>. He \u200bclaimed a 46-point lead over the next-closest \u200dcandidate, Florida Gov. \u2063Ron DeSantis, \u200dand argued that the \u2062public already knows who he is.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The\u200b public knows who I am &#038; what a successful Presidency I had, with Energy Independence, Strong Borders\u2064 &#038; Military,\u200c Biggest EVER Tax \u200b&#038; Regulation \u200cCuts, \u200cNo Inflation, \u200cStrongest Economy in History, &#038;\u200b much more. I WILL THEREFORE NOT BE \u2062DOING THE DEBATES!&#8221; the former\u2062 president wrote on Truth Social.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than attend the debate, which will be hosted by \u200cFox News, it&#8217;s been reported \u200cthat President Trump may counter-program the event in a sit-down interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson. Mr. Patel said an interview with Mr. Carlson would further draw attention\u200b away from the RNC\u200c debate and diminish \u2062whatever polling boosts Mr. Trump&#8217;s primary opponents might derive from Wednesday night&#8217;s debate.<\/p>\n<h2>Georgia Indictment a &#8216;Political Prosecution&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>President \u200cTrump&#8217;s decision to skip the debate on Wednesday means \u200dhe will also avoid being directly pressed by his \u2063primary \u200bopponents\u2063 or debate moderators on the four\u200b criminal \u200dindictments he currently faces. Last week, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis unveiled the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-responds-to-latest-criminal-indictment-reminiscent-of-nazi-germany\/\" title=\"Trump compares latest criminal indictment to Nazi Germany.\">latest criminal indictment<\/a> against the former president, alleging he and 18 other co-defendants broke the law in how they went about \u2063contesting\u200c the 2020 election results.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing \u2062the \u2062Fulton County indictment, Mr. Patel said &#8220;I think \u200bthe \u200bprosecution is baseless.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In an Aug. 15 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.donaldjtrump.com\/news\/a9d839d0-2fec-4f0f-8b35-7b7c049ee2ff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> after\u2062 Ms. Willis announced the indictment, President Trump&#8217;s 2024 \u2062campaign argued that her case is \u200ctainted by political bias.
