Ltd., a Chinese company \u200dbased near Hefei, a city in eastern China.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>Related Stories<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/article\/ev-inventories-pile-up-as-dealer-expectation-dims-for-q3-5475813\">EV Inventories Pile Up as Dealer Expectation Dims for Q3<\/a> &#8211; 8\/18\/2023<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/pennsylvania-planning-54-locations-for-ev-charging-stations-5464106\">Pennsylvania Planning 54 Locations for EV Charging Stations<\/a> \u200d &#8211; 8\/15\/2023<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The document also asks the registrant to state if \u201cthis foreign principal,\u201d meaning the American company\u2062 Gotion Inc. is\u200d either \u201csupervised,\u201d \u201cdirected,\u201d or \u2064\u201cfinanced\u201d by \u201ca foreign government, foreign \u2063political party, or other foreign principal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gotion\u2019s answer \u200cto this was &#8220;No.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It is, though, \u201ccompletely controlled\u201d by Gotion High-tech Co., a Chinese company.<\/p>\n<p>The\u2062 document also \u2064asks if the \u201cforeign principal,\u201d or Gotion Inc., \u200cwill engage in \u201cpolitical activities.\u201d Gotion\u2019s answer to this\u2064 was &#8220;Yes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Gotion explains\u200b that the company came into contact with many CEOs and company directors in Michigan, as well as politicians, in its pursuit of starting the battery plant.<\/p>\n<p>The method used by Gotion to achieve this was \u201ccommunication by email, text, and phone with members of the Michigan executive and legislative branches on legal and policy-related matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition, there was communication by\u200b email or phone with the \u2064\u201cMecosta County Board of Commissioners regarding legal and policy concerns\u201d with \u200cthe proposed battery\u2063 plant, including \u201ceconomic \u2064incentives, and\u2062 rezoning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Just the News reported that Gotion secured a $1 billion taxpayer support for its\u2063 factory and that its overall cost\u2062 would be $2.4 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Michigan residents, Republicans, and environmental groups have raised concerns about the deal.<\/p>\n<p>All companies in China, including foreign companies, are\u200d required under the law to have a Chinese Communist Party (CCP) office set\u2062 up inside the company\u2019s structure. This office supervises the company\u2019s function.<\/p>\n<p>Gotion High-Tech\u2019s governing article states:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArticle 9: The Company shall set up a Party organization and carry out \u2062Party activities in accordance\u2064 with the Constitution of the Communist Party of China. The Company shall ensure necessary conditions for \u2063carrying out Party activities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It goes\u200c on\u2064 to say, \u201cThe secretary of the Party committee shall be the chairman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This seems to mean that the CCP \u200dcommittee inside the company is not \u200cjust for supervising and reporting back \u200dto the CCP but\u2063 it also functions as the director of the company.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, a Chinese company is a CCP-controlled company, which is allowed to control \u200can American company \u2064that \u200dconducts business and probably lobbies American politicians.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese Gotion&#8217;s &#8220;Party Committee&#8221; will ensure the company follows the Chinese Communist Party&#8217;s regulations and &#8220;lead the ideological and political \u200cwork, united front work, spiritual civilization\u2064 construction, enterprise culture construction, labor union, Communist Youth League and other mass work of the Company; lead the construction of Party conduct and clean government, and\u200b support the Commission for Discipline Inspection,&#8221; according to\u200b the articles.<\/p>\n<p>Gotion&#8217;s North American Manufacturing Vice President Chuck Thelen dismissed concerns \u2063saying that Gotion\u2064 Inc. is \u2062\u201cnot Chinese-owned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The rumors that \u200cyou\u2019ve heard\u200d about us bringing communism to North \u200dAmerica are just flat-out fear-mongering and really \u200dhave nothing based in reality,&#8221; he said earlier this month, according to Politico.<\/p>\n<p>Gotion did not immediately reply to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<h2>Chinese Business Expanding in Michigan<\/h2>\n<p>Yet another Chinese company,\u2062 named CATL, producing EV batteries has plans of making business with a Ford battery plant in Michigan.<\/p>\n<p>The factory will be owned by Ford through a\u200c wholly owned subsidiary without foreign investment; Chinese EV battery maker \u200cContemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL) will provide the\u200c battery technology, some equipment, and\u2062 Chinese workers. (Screenshot via The Epoch Times)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Michigan locals are mounting resistance against the plant being concerned about CATL&#8217;s communist backing, the associated national security risk, the loss of prime farmland, the lack of transparency in the process, and an oversize industrial park\u2019s impact on a \u200bsmall town.<\/p>\n<p>But EV batteries might not come only\u2063 through China. Chinese investment in South Korea might serve a similar\u200c purpose, as South Korea \u2064has a free trade agreement with the United States.<\/p>\n<p>In\u2062 the past\u200d five months, four\u200d Chinese firms have announced investing more than 5.6 trillion won ($4 billion) \u200din South Korea for new EV battery factories.\u200c These deals were established to take advantage of Korea\u2019s free-trade agreement with \u2063the United \u2062States to qualify for EV tax credits under the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.)\u2062 has asked\u2063 the Biden administration\u2062 to stop U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/canada-mexico-angry-over-bidens-support-for-electric-vehicle-tax-credits-citing-trade-agreements\/\" title=\"Canada, Mexico Angry over Biden\u2019s Support for Electric Vehicle Tax Credits, Citing Trade Agreements\">electric vehicle tax credits<\/a> from going to Chinese companies through their partnerships in South Korea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe \u200bproducts\u2064 manufactured in\u200d our South Korean base \u2064meet the critical \u200cminerals requirements in the IRA bill for the benefit of tariff policies when exporting to European and U.S. markets,\u201d Ningbo Ronbay New \u2063Energy Technology Co. stated in an announcement\u2062 regarding setting up\u2062 a plant in South Korea to produce 80,000 tons of EV battery precursors a year. The value of the investment hasn&#8217;t been disclosed.<\/p>\n<p>Another\u2064 Chinese\u200d company, \u200cGEM Co., Ltd., stated\u200c in\u2063 a March release, \u201cTo qualify for tax credits, IRA requires that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/price-tag-for-biden-signature-climate-law-balloons-to-multiple-of-initial-estimates\/\" title=\"Price tag for Biden signature climate law balloons to multiple of initial estimates\">consumer electric vehicles<\/a>\u200d contain a certain percentage of battery materials and critical minerals from America\u2063 or countries with a\u200c free-trade agreement with America, but China is not one such \u200ccountry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>GEM also stated that its investment of more than $937 million \u2064in an EV battery precursor\u200b factory with an annual production capacity of 43,000 tons in South Korea.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>the U.S. government.
