Version: 4.0.47--><div>\n<h2>A Parents Group Challenges\u2064 Admissions Policy\u2064 at Elite Virginia High School<\/h2>\n<p>A parents \u2063group backed by a conservative \u200clegal organization <span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">is\u2064 urging<\/span> the U.S. <span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Supreme\u200c Court<\/span> to\u200d consider whether an admissions policy aimed at diversifying an elite Virginia high school\u200c is \u200bracially discriminatory.<\/p>\n<p>The case over how \u2064students are selected to attend Thomas Jefferson High School for Science &#038;\u2062 Technology came to the \u200c <span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">court<\/span> two months\u2064 after \u200cits \u2063conservative majority barred colleges and universities from considering \u200crace as a\u200d factor in admissions.<\/p>\n<p>But unlike the higher education cases, the admissions\u200c policy \u2064adopted in 2020 by\u2063 Virginia&#8217;s\u2064 Fairfax County School\u2063 Board for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/supreme-court-asked-to-hear-case-testing-scope-of-affirmative-action-ban\/\" title=\"Supreme Court urged to review case on Affirmative Action Ban.\">state-chartered magnet high school<\/a> was on its \u200cface race-neutral.<\/p>\n<p>The \u200cAlexandria-based \u2063school, known as TJ,\u200d often ranks \u2063among the best U.S. public high\u200c schools.<\/p>\n<p>The board eliminated\u200b a \u2064standardized test from \u2062its admissions \u2064process, capped \u200cthe\u200d number of students from each of the \u200ddistrict&#8217;s middle schools, and guaranteed\u200d seats for the top students from each.<\/p>\n<p>After the overhaul, the share of\u200d black and Hispanic students \u200cincreased, but the percentage\u2062 of Asian-American students fell to 54 percent from 73 percent in the first\u2062 year.<\/p>\n<p>A parents group called Coalition for TJ, whose members include Asian Americans, sued,\u200d saying the policy was adopted with\u200b a racially discriminatory \u2064purpose in\u2064 violation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-legal-team-files-appeal-after-obama-judge-dismisses-lawsuit-seeking-to-block-pennsylvania-from-certifying-its-results\/\" title=\"Trump Legal Team Files Appeal After Obama Judge Dismisses Lawsuit Seeking to Block Pennsylvania From Certifying Its Results\">equal protection clause<\/a> of the U.S. Constitution&#8217;s 14th\u2063 Amendment.<\/p>\n<p>In February 2022, U.S. District\u200d Judge Claude Hilton sided\u200d with the \u2063parents&#8217;\u200c group\u200b lawyers at the libertarian \u200cPacific Legal\u200d Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>In\u2064 May, however,\u2063 the \u2062Richmond-based 4th U.S. \u2062Circuit <span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Court<\/span> of Appeals reversed him, saying the board did\u2063 not intend to discriminate against \u2062Asian Americans\u200d and had a legitimate \u200binterest in &#8220;expanding\u2062 the array of student \u2064backgrounds.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In Monday&#8217;s petition asking the\u2063 <span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Supreme Court<\/span> to hear the case, the coalition&#8217;s\u2063 lawyers said \u2064the <span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">court<\/span>&#8216;s June decision \u2062ending affirmative\u2064 action \u2062in college\u2062 admissions &#8220;might mean little \u2063if schools could accomplish the\u2063 same discriminatory result through race-neutral proxies.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/elite-san-francisco-school-nixes-merit-based-admission\/\" title=\"Elite San Francisco School Nixes Merit-Based Admission\">school board&#8217;<\/a>s lawyer \u200ddid not immediately respond to a request \u2063for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Last\u200c year the\u2063 <span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Supreme Court<\/span> declined an emergency request to block its policy, though three conservative justices \u2063dissented.<\/p>\n<p>(Reporting\u200d by\u2062 Nate \u200bRaymond in Boston; Editing by Clarence Fernandez)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A conservative legal organization-supported parents group has urged the U.S. Supreme Court to review the admissions policy of a Virginia high school.
