Gavin Newsom\u2063 also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/newsom-dedicates-more-officers-to-crack-down-on-organized-retail-crime-5476305\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pledged<\/a> to triple law enforcement officers in the region as a way to tackle the problem.<\/p>\n<p>Tim Lineberger, \u200ba \u200bspokesman \u200bfor the Recall District Attorney George Gasc\u00f3n committee, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/venturestrategic.app.box.com\/s\/tg48w2kmpqmf6gbty74l1ra5df34bl5w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suing<\/a> the county registrar to certify its recall petition, called the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/desantiss-track-record-in-florida-would-boost-potential-2024-run-but-work-is-needed-to-reach-non-florida-voters-analysts\/\" title=\"DeSantis\u2019s Track Record in Florida Would Boost Potential 2024 Run, But Work is Needed to Reach Non-Florida Voters: Analysts\">task force announcement<\/a> an \u200c\u201cempty gesture.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width:600px\" class=\"alignnone\"><figcaption>Los \u2062Angeles\u2063 County District\u200c Attorney George Gascon speaks at a press conference in Los Angeles, on Dec. 8, 2021. (Robyn Beck\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The group\u2019s \u2062petition was rejected by the county\u2019s registrar who claimed nearly 27 percent of \u2063the nearly 716,000 \u200bsignatures collected were invalid. After \u200ba 10-month review, the recall group alleges many of the rejected signatures were \u2062valid, according to Mr. Lineberger.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Gasc\u00f3n, the\u200c Los Angeles County district attorney, has advocated a controversial policy of reducing charges and eliminating cash bail for nonviolent misdemeanors and felony crimes since taking office in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Gasc\u00f3n was not invited\u200c to the mayor\u2019s retail \u200ccrimes \u2064task force press conference, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass told <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elex_michaelson\/status\/1692564408382202005?s=61&#038;t=0_nL2PODZjU5Uyrddxgnxg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FOX LA<\/a> Friday.<\/p>\n<p>She said, however, she\u200d thought Mr. Gasc\u00f3n would prosecute retail crime suspects charged by\u2063 the task force.<\/p>\n<h2>Prowler Not Charged<\/h2>\n<p>Serial prowler \u2063 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/serial-prowler-arrested-again-after-at-least-9-releases-under-zero-cash-bail-5476336\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Calese Crowder<\/a>, 37, of\u200d Glendale, was arrested Aug. 17\u200c by Glendale police after he allegedly failed to \u2064register as a sex offender.<\/p>\n<p>The \u200bsuspect has a lengthy record of prowling, burglary, and peeping into residences while people were home,\u2062 and was released a day before his arrest after serving one day of a 60-day sentence for\u200b peeping into a family\u2019s residence when they were home with their children.<\/p>\n<p>He pleaded no\u2062 contest to the charges and was ordered to complete 52 weeks of a sexual\u2062 impulse rehabilitation program\u200b and register as a\u2063 sex offender, according to police reports.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile last week, Burbank police suspected Mr.\u2063 Crowder in\u2062 connection to a report of a man stalking and sniffing women at the Burbank Barnes and Nobel bookstore Aug. \u20637.<\/p>\n<p>Following his\u200c latest arrest, Mr. Crowder\u200b was released just before 5:30 p.m. Friday, after Mr. Gasc\u00f3n decided not to charge him for failing to\u200c register \u200cas a sex offender.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width:254px\" class=\"alignnone\"><figcaption>Calese\u200c Crowder, 37, of Glendale, Calif.,\u2064 was arrested again Aug. 17, 2023 by\u2064 Glendale Police Department after failing to register as a sex offender. (Courtesy\u2063 of Glendale Police Department)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mr.\u200b Gasc\u00f3n\u2019s office claims Glendale\u2062 police didn\u2019t provide enough evidence to charge Mr.\u2062 Crowder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fort-lauderdale-airport-temporarily-evacuated-over-security-investigation\/\" title=\"Fort Lauderdale Airport briefly evacuated due to security probe.\">law\u2062 enforcement investigation<\/a> into Mr. Crowder\u2019s knowledge\u2062 as to his registration requirements did not reveal sufficient evidence that he was provided adequate notification upon release from custody \u200bto prove he was aware of his specific registration duties,\u201d\u2062 Gasc\u00f3n\u2019s office told The Epoch Times in an emailed statement.<\/p>\n<p>According to\u2064 the state\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/codes_displayText.xhtml?lawCode=PEN&#038;division=&#038;title=9.&#038;part=1.&#038;chapter=5.5.&#038;article=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">penal code<\/a>, Mr. Crowder had five working \u200cdays to register with the Glendale police. \u2064The law requires detention\u200d officials \u2064to inform \u200csex offenders of their duty to register.<\/p>\n<p>The district attorney is \u200calso unable to \u2063file any additional charges against\u2064 the suspect until a case is presented by law enforcement, Gasc\u00f3n\u2019s office said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Lineberger, the \u2064recall \u2064effort\u2019s spokesman, said not charging Crowder \u200bsent \u2063a dangerous message.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just emblematic of so\u200b many criminals \u2062George Gasc\u00f3n let\u2062 off easily or has not prosecuted at all,\u201d \u2063he said. \u201cPeople feel like they can get away with anything \u2064they want. They know he\u2019s on their side.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Glendale Police Department spokesman did not return a request for comment by press time.<\/p>\n<h2>Crime \u2062Wave Continues<\/h2>\n<p>Despite facing a tropical storm\u200b in the region, groups\u2064 of thieves struck several establishments again last weekend.<\/p>\n<p>A \u2064Nike store \u200cin East Los Angeles was burglarized three times Saturday and \u200cSunday\u200d by four suspects, according to what appears to be an internal email written\u2063 by Los Angeles Sheriff\u2019s Sgt. Reginald Hoffman, which was \u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/alexvilanueva33\/status\/1693423159675179059?s=61&#038;t=w1j5KvewfOq5LvfYUGFQAA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">posted<\/a> by former Sheriff Alex Villanueva on X, formerly known as \u2064Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is embarrassing,\u201d Mr. Villanueva said in the post.<\/p>\n<p>According to the email, Mr. Hoffman said three men and one woman took over \u200c$2,000 worth of merchandise\u200c from\u200d the store located on Whittier Boulevard Aug. 20. The store has also burglarized two times the \u2063day before, within an hour.<\/p>\n<p>The LAPD\u200c also \u2064reported a\u2064 rash of crimes targeting\u200d five kosher restaurants Saturday, according to media reports. The smash-and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/californias-flash-mob-burglary-suspect-released-hours-after-arrest-on-zero-cash-bail\/\" title=\"California's 'flash-mob' burglary suspect freed shortly after arrest with no bail.\">-grab thefts reportedly \u200cinvolved numerous male suspects wearing dark clothing<\/a>.\u200d The \u200cthefts occurred in the heart of Los Angeles\u2019s Jewish Community on West Pico Boulevard and involved\u2063 Nagila Pizza, Fisherman\u2019s Bowl, Shanghai Diamond Garden, SushiKo, and Shalom Grill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis\u2063 is\u200d unacceptable in Los Angeles!\u201d Los Angeles\u2063 County prosecutor Jonathan Hatami, who is also running for district attorney in \u200d2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jonathanhatami\/status\/1693401661262450882?s=61&#038;t=shckus5mdsZcO0MuiPjfTQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">posted<\/a> on X. \u201cI\u2019m confident the LAPD will fully investigate these crimes but we all need \u200bto make sure Gascon, who has been\u200b silent on the matter,\u2063 files the appropriate charges.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two high-profile suspects in Los Angeles County were swiftly released after their arrests on Aug. 18, sparking criticism over the county&#8217;s revived zero-cash bail policy.
