It&#8217;s a concerning trend that demands immediate\u200b attention.<\/p>\n<p>Believe it or not, there\u2064 are seven times more car thefts \u2062than\u2063 carjackings in the nation&#8217;s capital. This shocking\u2063 statistic highlights the severity of the problem.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, a brazen\u2063 thief took authorities on a wild chase, first in a stolen truck and then in a stolen ambulance. The chaos that ensued resulted in multiple collisions with\u200d police cruisers \u200band innocent victims&#8217; vehicles. Seven people were rushed to the hospital, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/stfu-israeli-arab-muslim-blasts-aoc-for-calling-israel-an-apartheid-state\/\" title=\"\u2018STFU\u2019: Israeli Arab Muslim Blasts AOC For Calling Israel An Apartheid State\">requiring urgent medical care<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;He struck my cruiser once. He&#8217;s trying to strike it again. We&#8217;re trying to get him \u2063to stop,&#8221; an officer was heard saying on the \u200dpolice scanner.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>One of the culprits behind\u2064 these\u200c car thefts is Darell Caldwell, \u2062a 30-year-old repeat offender. In April, he stole a Cadillac Escalade SUV and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/michigan-gov-gretchen-whitmer-unveils-plans-to-shut-down-a-65-year-old-pipeline\/\" title=\"Michigan Gov. Eventually,\u2062 his stolen vehicle got stuck near \u2064train tracks, leading to his arrest. Shockingly, \u2064just two days later, he was released from jail, raising serious concerns about the judicial system&#8217;s handling of car \u200ctheft \u200ccases.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If the theft of the car was for just stealing \u2014 very likely that the \u2063judges, per the [D.C. Criminal Code], would have no grounds\u2062 to\u2062 hold him pending trial [in] such \u200da case,&#8221; a D.C. Courts spokesperson reportedly said.<\/p>\n<p>These incidents have sparked \u2064outrage among Washington residents,\u200b including attorney Denise Rucker Krepp, who took to social media to express her frustration.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;4610 cars \u2063stolen to date this\u2062 year in D.C. \u200cMaybe it\u2019s time to update the law?&#8221; she asked.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3>Addressing the Crisis<\/h3>\n<p>As the\u200c summer break comes to\u2063 an end, the DC Council \u2063is gearing up to tackle the rising crime rates in the city. Mayor Muriel Bowser&#8217;s &#8220;Safer, Stronger DC&#8221; bill will be \u200cunder consideration, but it&#8217;s\u200d disheartening to note that car theft is not currently listed as a crime that allows judges to hold\u200c suspects \u2064in \u2062jail until their trial.<\/p>\n<p>In\u2063 response to the \u2064concerns,\u2063 Bowser&#8217;s office has highlighted her proposed safety bill and\u2062 Councilwoman Brooke Pinto&#8217;s legislation.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;In May, as\u200d part of her Safer Stronger Amendment Act of 2023, \u200dMayor Bowser proposed greater discretion for the Courts to \u2063determine who\u200d should be held pre-trial, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/dc-leaders-pressed-on-why-car-thieves-cant-be-held-in-jail-after-stolen-ambulance-crashed-into-13-cars\/\" title=\"DC leaders questioned about lack of jail time for car thieves after stolen ambulance crashes into 13 cars.\">including\u2064 defendants previously convicted<\/a> of a violent crime while they await trial for a new violent crime.
