The judge has temporarily halted the enforcement of a Georgia law that prohibits the use \u2062of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/democrat-governor-says-he-doesnt-support-sex-change-operations-on-kids-he-vetoed-a-bill-banning-them\/\" title=\"Democrat Governor Vetoes Bill Banning Sex-Change Operations on Kids, Doesn't Support Them.\">cross-sex\u2064 hormones<\/a> for treating minors who identify as transgender.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. District Court Judge \u2064Sarah Geraghty granted a preliminary injunction on Aug. 20 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.splcenter.org\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/koe-v-noggle-injunction-order.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pdf<\/a>) in a lawsuit challenging \u2062Georgia&#8217;s ban on \u200bhormone replacement therapy for the treatment of gender dysphoria in \u2064children.<\/p>\n<p>Georgia&#8217;s ban on child gender transition was implemented when Republican Gov. Brian Kemp signed Senate Bill 140 into law on March 23. Proponents argue that \u200cthese treatments\u2064 are medically necessary\u200b to reduce \u2064the\u2062 risk of suicide among individuals with gender dysphoria.<\/p>\n<p>Opponents, however, \u200cdispute the claim that transgender procedures effectively lower\u200c suicidality. A study\u2063 conducted in March, which evaluated\u200b mental health outcomes \u2064solely in terms of\u2062 suicide likelihood, found inconclusive results.<\/p>\n<p>One reason for the inconclusiveness is that most of the underlying research failed to\u200b account for the time elapsed after transgender procedures. The \u200dstudy suggests that individuals who undergo such procedures may experience \u2064an initial &#8220;honeymoon \u2063period&#8221; that diminishes over\u200c time, leading to similar levels of suicidal ideation as before.<\/p>\n<p>The study authors noted the lack of methodological\u2063 robustness in the \u2062literature reviewed\u200b and its implications for the \u200binformed consent process of gender-affirming treatment.<\/p>\n<p>In her \u200dorder, Judge Geraghty acknowledged the risks associated\u200b with hormone\u200b therapy but emphasized that these risks can be managed through an individualized approach. This approach\u200d involves consulting\u200c mental health and medical experts, considering parental consent, and ensuring that the treatment is deemed medically necessary.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The imminent risks of irreparable harm to Plaintiffs flowing from the ban\u2014including risks \u2064of depression, anxiety, disordered eating, \u200dself-harm, and suicidal ideation\u2014outweigh any harm the \u2064State will experience from the \u200cinjunction,&#8221; the judge wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The question of \u2064whether transgender treatments are medically necessary\u2064 has been a topic of debate \u2063and has arisen in other legal cases, such as the one challenging Florida&#8217;s \u2062ban on taxpayer-funded \u200ctransgender\u2062 procedures.<\/p>\n<p>In that case, plaintiffs argued that\u200c &#8220;gender affirming care&#8221; should be considered \u200dmedically necessary, safe, and effective for both adults and adolescents.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Florida&#8217;s comprehensive review does\u2063 not support the use of puberty blockers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/very-complicated-dr-rachel-levine-dodges-sen-pauls-issue-about-sex-adjustments-for-children\/\" title=\"\u2018Very Complicated\u2019: Dr. Rachel Levine Dodges Sen.
