But after Texas suffered the worst winter storm in years, Marrs\u2019 February electricity bill&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/02\/22\/970074424\/why-some-texas-residents-now-face-huge-electricity-bills\">totaled<\/a>&nbsp;more than $10,000,\u201d the outlet noted. \u201cThat\u2019s because for a period of 32 hours during the deepest freeze of February\u2019s winter storm, power companies were paying&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/live-updates-winter-storms-2021\/2021\/02\/21\/969912613\/after-days-of-mass-outages-some-texas-residents-now-face-huge-electric-bills\">$9 per kilowatt-hour<\/a>&nbsp;for electricity \u2014 about 75 times higher than the state\u2019s average winter costs. Companies passed those costs on to consumers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The PUC, Texas\u2019 utility regulator, chose not to retroactively reduce consumer bills, claiming such a decision would cause more harm in the long run.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just see the tip of the iceberg,\u201d Texas PUC Chairman Arthur D\u2019Andrea said. \u201cYou don\u2019t know who you\u2019re hurting. You think you\u2019re protecting the consumer and turns out you\u2019re bankrupting a co-op or a city. And so it\u2019s dangerous, after something is run, to go around and redo it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NPR also reported that Texas\u2019 independent market monitor, Potomac Economics, pointed out that increased electricity prices were inflated for longer than necessary. The monitor \u201ccalculated that the inflated electricity rate during that time period led to $16 billion in additional charges,\u201d the outlet reported.<\/p>\n<p>D\u2019Andrea, however, continued to defend the decision not to reduce electricity bills.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDecisions were made about these prices in real time based on information that was available to everybody, to all market participants,\u201d D\u2019Andrea said, according to NPR. \u201cAnd they did all sorts of things that they wouldn\u2019t have done if the prices were different. And it\u2019s just nearly impossible to unscramble this sort of egg.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the results of going down this path are unknowable,\u201d D\u2019Andrea added. \u201cI know, on the surface, it looks like \u2014 oh no, it\u2019s just money that generators got, and if you reverse it, it will go to the consumers. But that is very simplistic, and it\u2019s not how it works.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As The Daily Wire previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/millions-without-power-in-texas-energy-prices-climb\">reported<\/a> the winter storm that hit Texas earlier this month knocked out power for millions of residents, leading to soaring gas and electricity prices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe cold southern weather created a situation where fuel demand increased at the same time production capabilities were stymied. Energy prices went up as a result. The electric grid struggled to keep up with the need, which made some utilities enforce blackouts,\u201d The Daily Wire reported.<\/p>\n<p>Natural gas prices jumped 6.7%, while gasoline futures spiked more than 4%.<\/p>\n<p>As NBC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/amp\/ncna1258362\">reported<\/a> earlier this month, Texas\u2019 \u201cprimary electric grid was hit with off-the-charts demand for power as Texans tried to heat their homes \u2014 demand that outpaced utility officials\u2019 highest estimates for an extreme peak load.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
