Two weeks later, Weiss was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/merrick-garland-announces-special-counsel-appointed-hunter-biden-probe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">appointed<\/a> as the Justice Department\u2019s special counsel in the case.<\/p>\n<p>All of this\u2062 has\u200c triggered a renewed focus on his early career.<\/p>\n<h3>A Close Working Relationship<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2023\/08\/20\/hunter-biden-david-weiss-special-prosecutor-delaware\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Washington Post<\/a> reported Sunday that in 2010, Weiss was the acting U.S. attorney for\u200b Delaware and worked closely with Beau Biden\u2064 \u2014 Delaware\u2019s attorney general and Joe Biden\u2019s eldest son \u2014 on a major prosecution.<\/p>\n<p>The report said that during Weiss\u2019 time with the U.S. attorney\u2019s office, it and the\u2063 state attorney general\u2019s office, which was headed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/white-house-staff-oblivious-guest-secretly-stayed-two-weeks-hunter-biden-plea-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beau\u2062 Biden<\/a> from\u200b 2007 through 2014,\u2064 often worked together. Biden died of\u2063 cancer in 2015.<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">\u201cWe are\u2062 always working hand-in-glove with federal government; there\u2019s nothing unusual about that,\u201d\u2064 Tim Mullaney Sr., Beau Biden\u2019s former chief of staff, told the Post.<\/p>\n<h3>Controversy and Criticism<\/h3>\n<p>Republicans \u2063have railed against Weiss\u2019 Aug. 11 appointment as special\u2062 counsel into issues related to Hunter Biden.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Weiss has been compromised,\u201d Republican Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/cnn-admits-truth-donald-trump-live-tv-bad-news-joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lindsey Graham<\/a> of South Carolina said, while Rep.\u2064 Jim Jordan of \u2062Ohio said he \u201ccan\u2019t be\u2064 trusted,\u201d according to the Post.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. It is normal,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<h3>A\u2063 Complicated Investigation<\/h3>\n<p>As noted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.factcheck.org\/2023\/07\/trump-appointed-weiss-with-democrats-blessing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FactCheck.org<\/a>, although Weiss was \u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/trumpwhitehouse.archives.gov\/presidential-actions\/president-donald-j-trump-announces-ninth-wave-united-states-attorney-nominations-third-wave-united-states-marshal-nominations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nominated<\/a> to\u2062 be U.S. attorney by a Republican \u2014 then-President Donald Trump \u2014 in 2017,\u200b he was supported \u2063by two Democratic senators from Delaware \u2014 Sens. Tom Carper and Chris Coons \u2013 both of whom recommended that Trump name Weiss.<\/p>\n<p>Weiss\u200b began investigating Hunter Biden in 2018. No charges \u200cwere filed until this year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/08\/19\/us\/politics\/inside-hunter-biden-plea-deal.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The New York Times<\/a> reported Saturday that Weiss \u201cappeared \u2063willing to forgo any prosecution of Mr. \u200cBiden at all, and his office came \u2063close to agreeing to end the investigation without requiring a guilty plea on any \u2064charges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The report said all that changed \u201caround the time \u200ba pair of I.R.S. officials on the case accused the Justice Department of\u2064 hamstringing the investigation.
