He emphasized that these diseases travel with the\u200c migrants when they are bussed to different locations, \u2062including New York.<\/p>\n<p>One study cited by Siegel revealed that more than 4% \u200bof migrants from \u200dCentral and South America\u2064 to Europe were sick with Chagas&#8217; disease, a contagious\u2063 illness that can lead\u2064 to \u2063serious complications, including heart failure. She also \u200dnoted that New York City&#8217;s TB rate is more than double the national rate, with the\u2062 majority of cases\u2062 being from people \u200dborn\u200d outside \u200dthe country. Texas border counties have a TB rate three times\u2064 the \u2063national average.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to tuberculosis, another concerning \u2064case in New York was \u2063a man who\u2062 became \u200cparalyzed after contracting \u200bpolio\u200c in 2022. He had not been vaccinated\u200b against the disease, and this was the first \u200cknown case of polio in\u2063 the state \u200bsince 1990.
