They\u2019ve asked for DNA work-ups on other people. To the extent that they don\u2019t have them, they weren\u2019t done,\u201d Latah County Prosecuting Attorney Bill \u200cThompson argued. \u201cWe can\u2019t produce something\u2062 that doesn\u2019t exist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a\u2062 June court filing, the suspect\u2019s \u2062other attorney, Jay Weston Logsdon, filed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insideedition.com\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-files\/061623%20States%20Motion%20for%20Protective%20Order.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">motion<\/a> objecting to the prosecutor\u2019s attempts to avoid turning over a detailed breakdown of how authorities used genetic genealogy to link the accused to the murders. Logsdon wrote in the motion that investigators found DNA from three other men in the off-campus residence where Ethan Chapin, 20; Kaylee Goncalves, 21; Xana Kernodle, 20; and Madison Mogen, 21, were murdered in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/democrat-cori-bush-rushes-to-defense-of-very-violent-criminals-rioting-attacking-guard-in-jail\/\" title=\"Democrat Cori Bush Rushes To Defense Of \u2018Very Violent\u2019 Criminals Rioting, Attacking Guard In Jail\">early morning hours<\/a> of\u200d November\u200c 13, 2022.\u200c DNA from two men was found inside the house, while\u2063 DNA from a third man was found outside the home on a glove, the filing says, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insideedition.com\/bryan-kohberger-defense-dna-suspects-glove-murder-trial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Inside Edition<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>None of the three reported samples match \u2063the suspect\u2019s DNA, though it is unknown when \u200dthis particular DNA was left at the home, which was the location of frequent parties.<\/p>\n<p>The suspect and \u2063his attorney say these DNA samples were never run\u200c through\u2064 the national DNA \u2064database to find a match.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors have argued that they didn\u2019t need to turn over detailed information about \u200dhow genetic\u2063 genealogy was used to link the suspect to the crimes since a DNA\u200d sample provided by the suspect directly matched DNA found on a knife sheath found at the crime scene. The genetic genealogy wouldn\u2019t be used\u200b at trial, prosecutors argued.<\/p>\n<p>Once police had their suspect, they tracked \u200chim\u200d to his \u2063parents\u2019 house in Pennsylvania and\u200d collected garbage from the outside trash cans. They obtained DNA that partially matched the DNA collected\u2062 from the knife sheath, \u200cindicating they had the DNA of the suspect\u2019s father. Collecting DNA from the suspect later directly linked him to \u200dthe sheath. The sheath \u200dwas found on a bed next to \u2063Goncalves \u200cand \u2064Mogen\u2019s bodies, partially\u200d under one of them. The type of knife the sheath held would have \u200dbeen \u200dconsistent with the knife used to murder the four victims.<\/p>\n<p>In July, the suspect\u2019s defense attorneys <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/idaho-murder-suspect-claims-dna-may-have-been-planted-at-crime-scene-by-cops\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claimed<\/a> that their client\u2019s DNA may have been planted at\u2062 the scene by police but could not explain why he would have been targeted for the \u2062crime.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, defense attorneys <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/accused-university-of-idaho-killer-offers-alibi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">provided an alibi<\/a> \u200d for the suspect, saying \u200bhe was simply out driving around in the middle of the night when the\u2062 crime occurred.<\/p>\n<p><b data-stringify-type=\"bold\"><\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u201c[The suspect] has long had a habit of going for \u200cdrives alone. Often he would\u2063 go for\u200c drives at night. \u2063He \u200bdid so late on November 12 and into \u2064November 13, 2022,\u201d attorney Anne Taylor wrote in the\u200c filing. \u201c[The suspect] is not claiming to be at a specific location at a specific time; at this time there is \u2064not a specific witness\u2063 to say precisely where [my client] \u200b was at each moment of the hours between late night November 12, 2022, and \u200cearly\u200d morning November 13, 2022. He was out, driving during the late \u2062night and early morning hours of November \u206312-13, 2022.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Part of the \u2064evidence that led \u200bto the suspect\u2019s arrest,\u200b mentioned in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/heres-how-police-captured-the-man-suspected-of-killing-four-university-of-idaho-students\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously unsealed<\/a> probable\u2064 cause affidavit, showed that police were able to narrow the\u200d timeframe of the crime to between 4:00 a.m. and \u20644:25 a.m. and reviewed video footage taken in the area in the time before and after the murders \u200dare believed to have occurred. The footage showed a white Hyundai Elantra without a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/minnesota-lawmaker-claimed-he-was-cited-for-driving-while-black-so-police-released-bodycam-footage\/\" title=\"Minnesota Lawmaker Claimed He Was Cited For \u2018Driving While Black,\u2019 So Police Released Bodycam Footage\">front license plate<\/a> (front license plates are required in Washington and Idaho, but not in Pennsylvania, where the car was registered) \u200din the area between 3:29 a.m. and 4:20 a.m. The vehicle \u2064can be seen passing the off-campus \u2064residence three times before\u2063 returning a\u200c fourth\u2064 time around \u200c4:04 a.m. and attempting to turn around\u2064 on the road. The vehicle was next seen around 4:20 a.m. traveling away\u2062 from the direction of the off-campus residence at high speed heading in \u200cthe \u2064direction\u2064 of a\u200d road \u2063that eventually leads to Pullman, Washington, where the suspect attended Washington State University (WSU).<\/p>\n<p>Video footage from the WSU campus showed a\u200d white Hyundai Elantra leaving the area and heading toward Moscow at around 2:53\u200d a.m. This vehicle was\u2064 again observed on five cameras in Pullman and the WSU campus at around 5:25 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>Police pulled records for white Hyundai Elantras registered at WSU on November 29 \u2013 just over two weeks after the murders \u200dwere committed \u2013 \u200dand found one belonging to the man who was eventually arrested for the crime. Police reviewed \u200dthe owner\u2019s Washington state driver\u2019s license \u2063and determined he matched the physical description of the suspect provided by one of the surviving roommates.<\/p>\n<p>Police\u200c matched the suspect to the vehicle through two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/jail-trying-to-accommodate-accused-idaho-killers-vegan-diet-but-wont-buy-new-pots-and-pans\/\" title=\"Jail Trying To Accommodate Accused Idaho Killer\u2019s Vegan Diet But Won\u2019t \u2018Buy New Pots And Pans\u2019\">previous traffic stops<\/a> \u200cin the months before the\u200d murders.\u2062 They also said \u2064that the suspect registered his vehicle in Washington and received Washington plates on November 18 \u2013\u200d five days after the murders.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The defense attorney representing the 28-year-old murder suspect of four University of Idaho students persists in challenging the credibility of DNA evidence discovered on a knife sheath at the crime location.
