He was\u2062 also found guilty in federal court last year for mail \u2063fraud for cashing in\u2062 nearly $5 million in insurance policies \u200dfor his \u2064wife, \u200dBianca Rudolph.<\/p>\n<p>Larry Rudolph\u200d has claimed \u2062throughout the case that \u200dhis wife\u2019s death \u200cin the southern African nation in <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/crime-shootings-united-states-denver-d8d91fb3cf2a14faa20705a8e1940a66\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2016 was an accident<\/a>. His lawyers plan to appeal the conviction.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>Prosecutors say Rudolph, who owned a Pittsburgh-area dental franchise,\u200d shot his wife of 34 years in \u200cthe heart\u200d with \u200ca shotgun on her last morning \u200din Zambia, and then\u2062 put the \u200cgun in its soft case to\u200d make \u200dit\u200b look like she had accidentally shot herself while packing. The couple\u200c had\u2063 been hunting game during\u2064 their\u2062 trip.<\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>They also claim\u200c the setting, about 80 miles from the nearest\u2064 police station, was \u2063the perfect place \u2064to try to get away with the crime, where he rushed to have his\u2064 wife cremated and intimidated officials investigating her death.<\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>They allege the goal was to live a\u200b lavish retirement with his longtime girlfriend, Lori Milliron, with the help of\u200b the insurance money. <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/dentist-safari-killer-girlfriend-5966246946bfda9b10981a7afcf4dc28\">She was sentenced to 17 years in \u2062prison<\/a> in June after being convicted of being an\u200c accessory. She has filed an\u2062 appeal.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>\u201cThe\u200c murder was the culmination of a lifetime \u200cspent \u200cseeking domination and control over others through wealth and \u2062power,\u201d prosecutors said in a court filing outlining their\u200d sentencing proposal.<\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Larry Rudolph\u200c could also get \u200bmore time in prison for mail fraud in\u200d addition to \u200cpaying \u2064a nearly $10 million \u200dfine,\u2063 forfeiting \u200cmillions in assets and paying \u2062the \u200binsurance companies back, according to\u200b what\u2062 the prosecutors are\u200c seeking.<\/p>\n<p>It is unclear if\u2063 any family members \u200bor\u200d friends of\u2064 Bianca \u2062Rudolph will confront the dentist during the \u2062hearing.<\/p>\n<p>The couple\u2019s two adult \u200bchildren, Julian and AnaBianca Rudolph, \u200chave\u2063 so far\u200d opted not \u2064to\u200d to speak\u200c much \u2063publicly about\u200b the\u2062 death, although AnaBianca \u2064testified against\u200b Milliron \u2063at her \u200csentencing. In a court filing, they say they\u2062 have \u201csuffered\u200d considerable financial harm\u201d and are entitled to restitution.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators in\u2062 Zambia and for the insurers concluded\u200c Bianca Rudolph\u2019s death was an accident. The insurance\u2063 companies, some based in Colorado, then had to\u2064 pay out the life insurance because of her\u2064 death,\u200d according to the \u2064defense \u200bin court documents.<\/p>\n<p>But Rudolph was arrested nearly\u200b five years\u200d after her death following an FBI investigation that sent agents traveling around the world to\u2062 collect\u2063 evidence and interview witnesses.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>A \u2064bartender at a steakhouse \u2062in Phoenix, where Milliron moved to be with\u2062 Rudolph after \u200dBianca\u2019s death, said he overheard Rudolph saying \u201cI\u2063 killed my f\u2014g\u200d wife \u200dfor you!\u201d during an \u200cargument they were having in \u200cearly\u200c 2020. However, Brian\u2062 Lovelace testified that he could not hear the words \u200bright\u200c before that statement because music was playing. Rudolph testified that he \u200cactually \u2064said, \u201cNow they\u2019re \u200dsaying I\u2063 killed my f\u2014g wife for\u2062 you!\u201d after \u2063learning that the \u2063FBI was investigating him.<\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Prosecutors allege\u200c he built his wealth on\u2062 fraud. They say \u200dhe shot \u2064off his \u200dthumb during a previous visit to\u2062 Zambia to \u2063collect millions in disability insurance money, and allege he also cheated his dental patients, creating the need for root canals by \u200bnot doing fillings \u2063or \u200ddrilling holes\u200d in\u2064 their teeth while they were asleep.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>The fine sought \u2062by the government is twice the amount that Rudolph received for the life insurance polices as well as insurance\u2064 for the jewelry Bianca Rudolph was wearing when \u2062she was killed. Rudolph \u200creported that the jewelry\u2063 was lost although officials in Zambia said they gave the items to\u2063 him. His lawyers say the government did not charge Rudolph for that and never proved the\u200d allegation.<\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Prosecutors want\u200d Rudolph to pay $4.9 million \u200din \u200drestitution to the insurance\u2062 companies, forfeit $4.8\u200d million\u200b from \u2062bank accounts, as well \u2064as real estate in Arizona and\u200d Pennsylvania and two luxury vehicles \u2014\u2063 an\u200c Aston Martin DB-11 and \u2063a Bentley Bentayga, according to court filings.<\/p>\n<p>Rudolph\u2019s lawyers say the\u200b properties and cars are worth millions and\u2064 that the combination of penalties\u2063 totals over\u2062 $25 million.\u2064 They \u2062say he cannot\u2064 afford that \u200dsince he \u2064no longer controls his \u200bdwindling dental practice, has significant debts and will \u200bnever \u200cbe able\u200b to earn more money.
