The U.S. attorney\u2019s office \u200dsuddenly\u2063 went quiet.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, May 23, after four days of silence, Ms. Wolf delivered unwelcome news. Mr. Weiss had revised what he\u200b wanted in the deal, now demanding that \u2062Mr. Biden plead guilty to two misdemeanor \u200ccounts of failing to pay his taxes. It \u2064crossed a red line for Mr. Clark.<\/p>\n<p>Erupting in \u200canger, Mr. Clark\u200d accused\u2064 Ms. \u200cWolf of misleading him. He renounced the\u200b possibility of any deal, but after \u200cconsulting with Mr. Biden,\u200d reversed course\u2062 and told Ms. Wolf that Mr. Biden was willing \u2062to go along.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Biden and Weiss then negotiated a now-infamous\u2062 plea deal\u200d that\u200b would have seen the first son avoid prison time and win broad immunity from further prosecution in exchange\u200b for \u2063pleading guilty \u200cto\u2063 misdemeanor tax\u200c crimes.<\/p>\n<p>Federal \u2064judge Maryellen Noreika last month <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/biden-administration\/justice-department-agrees-to-grant-hunter-biden-broad-legal-immunity-in-new-plea-agreement\/\">rejected<\/a> that\u2063 <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/democrats\/hunter-biden-felony-gun-charge-tax-charges\/\">plea deal<\/a>, \u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/biden-administration\/justice-department-agrees-to-grant-hunter-biden-broad-legal-immunity-in-new-plea-agreement\/\">taking issue<\/a> \u200b with the broad immunity \u2063the first son would have won. She told prosecutors and Biden&#8217;s legal\u2064 team to \u200dcraft a new one.\u200c She said the original deal was &#8220;not standard&#8221; and &#8220;different from what I normally see.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>Politico<\/em> reported this weekend that lawyers for\u200d Hunter Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2023\/08\/19\/hunter-biden-plea-deal-collapse-00111974\">threatened<\/a> to put\u2063 President Joe Biden on the stand if their\u200b client \u200bwas charged. &#8220;President Biden now unquestionably would \u200bbe\u200c a fact witness <i>for the defense<\/i> in \u2062any \u2063criminal trial,&#8221; Hunter Biden lawyer Chris Clark said\u200b in an October 2022 letter to Weiss.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hunter Biden&#8217;s investigation was almost closed by prosecutor David Weiss, but whistleblowers from the IRS prompted a change of plans, according to the New York Times.
