It also calls for no penalties for late work \u2064and no grades for both homework and &#8220;non-academic factors,&#8221; such as &#8220;participation, attendance, effort, attitude, [and] behavior.&#8221;\n  <\/p>\n<p>    \u200d The new grading practices, which are expected to be \u200cimplemented districtwide by 2025 after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pps.net\/Page\/12596\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">some classrooms<\/a> adopted them last \u2062year, \u200c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/portland-school-district-workshops-equitable-grading-practices-that-outlaw-zeros-for-cheating-missing-work\/\" title=\"Portland School District introduces workshops on 'Equitable Grading Practices' banning zeros for cheating or missing work.\">reflect left-wing \u2062efforts<\/a> across the country to\u2062 achieve \u200d&#8221;equitable outcomes&#8221; among all students. \u2062In California, for example, new <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/campus\/teaching-toward-social-justice-californias-new-math-framework-aims-to-create-equitable-outcomes-between-students\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">equity-focused math curriculum guidelines<\/a> aim\u200b to narrow the gap between gifted and non-gifted learners by abandoning &#8220;student\u2064 tracking&#8221; practices that help accelerated learners access more advanced instruction.\n  <\/p>\n<p>    \u2064 Erika Sanzi, the outreach director\u200d at parental\u200c rights group Parents Defending Education, said \u200bPortland&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/virginia-teachers-bristle-at-equity-proposal-to-abolish-grades\/\" title=\"Virginia Teachers Bristle at 'Equity' Proposal to Abolish Grades\">equitable grading practices<\/a>&#8221; hurt both struggling and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/elite-san-francisco-school-nixes-merit-based-admission\/\" title=\"Elite San Francisco School Nixes Merit-Based Admission\">high-achieving students<\/a>.\n  <\/p>\n<p>    \u2062    \u200c&#8221;These \u2062equitable grading\u200d policies, however well \u2062intended, are a disaster for the students\u2064 who\u200b struggle most and for \u2063the students who need accelerated coursework,&#8221; Sanzi told the \u200d <em>Free Beacon<\/em>.\n  <\/p>\n<p>    Portland Public\u2064 Schools \u200bdeclined to \u200dcomment on its new grading practices.\n  <\/p>\n<p>    \u2064 \u2062  The district&#8217;s new &#8220;bias-resistant&#8221; grading initiative argues that teachers should assign grades \u2063&#8221;based on valid evidence of a student&#8217;s content\u2062 knowledge, \u200cnot on\u2062 evidence\u2063 that \u2062\u2026 \u2064is likely to be influenced by a teacher&#8217;s implicit bias or reflect a\u200d student&#8217;s\u200b environment.&#8221; Teachers who offer \u200dextra credit, give \u2062zeros \u200dfor cheating, penalize late work, and\u2062 dock students for poor attendance or\u200b classroom \u200cbehavior may be guilty \u2064of such \u2064bias.\n  <\/p>\n<p>    \u2062   The initiative also calls to only &#8220;base \u200cgrades on \u200csummative \u200bassessments, \u200binstead\u2064 of \u2063classwork,\u2062 homework, formative assessments, etc.&#8221; Should a \u200cstudent cheat or fail to submit an \u200cassignment on time, \u200bteachers should provide a \u2064grade of at least 50 percent, \u200bthe district handout outlining the initiative\u2064 says. The initiative also \u200ccalls \u2062to replace the \u200btypical &#8220;0-100&#8243;\u2063 grading scale with a &#8220;0-4&#8221; scale.<br \/>\n \u2064\n  <\/p>\n<p>    While the district says\u200c it began implementing its equity-based grading \u2064policies in\u2064 some \u2063classrooms during\u2062 the\u2063 pandemic, its delay in\u2063 adopting them districtwide \u2062&#8221;has led to a mosaic\u200b of grading practices \u200dacross schools and across\u200c the district that is confusing \u2063to students and families.&#8221; As a result, the district will in the coming years work to\u2063 &#8220;consolidate&#8221;\u200b its policies, according to its\u2064 equitable grading \u200dpractices handout.<br \/>\n \u2063\n  <\/p>\n<p>    \u200b &#8220;We need to organize and consolidate our efforts towards common policies \u200bto more consistently\u200c and \u2064better support \u2064students and families with equitable grading,&#8221; the \u200bhandout\u200d says.<br \/>\n  \u2063\n  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>All Portland schools must adopt new guidelines by 2025.
