But that can take time, analysts say, since airlines must \u2063manually override automated systems that raise fares in the\u200c case of higher demand.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a look at\u2062 how airlines deal with a sudden surge in demand on a particular route.<\/p>\n<h2>DISASTERS\u2063 VERSUS HIGH DEMAND<\/h2>\n<p>Airlines set a range of ticket prices based on factors like purchase timing and demand. They then allocate seats to \u200beach fare, \u200dexplained Chris Amenechi, founder of startup SeatCash, which offers subscribers a product that predicts future flight prices.<\/p>\n<p>A demand spike would lead lower-priced fares to sell out\u2062 and shift to higher priced fares.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe system doesn\u2019t know\u2063 it\u2019s a disaster and when it happens, then companies have to \u2062make a decision to override the system,\u201d said Amenechi, a former commercial airline executive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a place \u2063like Yellowknife, there are (limited) flights and if all the flights are full you can just imagine how expensive it\u2019s going to be because nobody has an open\u2064 seat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said in some cases only one first \u200dor business class seat may be available.<\/p>\n<h3>CAN CARRIERS CAP AGGREGATED FARES?<\/h3>\n<p>Air Canada said in a statement that social media examples of\u200c flights for C$4,500 ($3,322) from Yellowknife to\u200b Calgary were aggregated fares from booking websites. Some of the flights involved several stops operated by other carriers, with some trips lasting as much as 21 hours, compared with a two-hour normal non-stop flight to Calgary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe endeavour to get\u2064 these aggregated fares corrected where possible,\u201d Air Canada said.<\/p>\n<p>Air Canada said it canceled a business class fare of around C$1,000 and\u200d made it into a regular fare on one flight out of Yellowknife. They \u2063also \u2062said they refund\u200c passengers who purchase a fare\u2063 before\u2062 it is corrected.<\/p>\n<p>Travel site Expedia\u2064 Group said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/explainer-how-airlines-cope-with-price-surge-during-disasters\/\" title=\"How airlines handle price surges in disasters.\">air partners set flight prices<\/a> and \u2063availability on its site. \u201cAirlines are free to adjust the prices \u200cand availability they display.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Air Canada had a Tuesday flight from Yellowknife to Calgary for as \u200blow as C$303 on Saturday. Rival WestJet Airlines\u200b had a direct flight of\u200c C$122.98\u200c for the route on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Airlines \u200dstill have power to lower prices during disasters.
