The party pushed for the proposal using slogans like \u201cStop extremism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The people who are against the ban point out that \u201cit appears to be mostly pointless,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/03\/07\/europe\/switzerland-referendum-face-covering-intl\/index.html\">CNN<\/a>. Andreas Tunger-Zanetti is a researcher at the University of Lucerne who has reportedly \u201cbeen studying Islam in Switzerland since 2007.\u201d According to Tunger-Zanetti\u2019s\u2019 new book, almost no one in the country wears a burqa and the amount of people who wear a niqab is at most 36.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-56314173?xtor=AL-72-%5Bpartner%5D-%5Bbbc.news.twitter%5D-%5Bheadline%5D-%5Bnews%5D-%5Bbizdev%5D-%5Bisapi%5D&amp;at_campaign=64&amp;at_custom3=%40BBCWorld&amp;at_medium=custom7&amp;at_custom2=twitter&amp;at_custom4=FE489064-7F57-11EB-BA25-A3E84744363C&amp;at_custom1=%5Bpost+type%5D\">BBC<\/a> reported on the minority muslim community, as well, stating that around \u201c5% of Switzerland\u2019s population of 8.6 million people are Muslim, most originating from Turkey, Bosnia and Kosovo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Central Council of Muslims said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-56314173?xtor=AL-72-%5Bpartner%5D-%5Bbbc.news.twitter%5D-%5Bheadline%5D-%5Bnews%5D-%5Bbizdev%5D-%5Bisapi%5D&amp;at_campaign=64&amp;at_custom3=%40BBCWorld&amp;at_medium=custom7&amp;at_custom2=twitter&amp;at_custom4=FE489064-7F57-11EB-BA25-A3E84744363C&amp;at_custom1=%5Bpost+type%5D\">statement<\/a>, \u201cToday\u2019s decision opens old wounds, further expands the principle of legal inequality, and sends a clear signal of exclusion to the Muslim minority.\u201d The group said that it would bring a challenge against the recent vote to the courts.<\/p>\n<p>Amnesty International also criticized the outcome, describing it as \u201canti-Muslim.\u201d The group said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-56314173?xtor=AL-72-%5Bpartner%5D-%5Bbbc.news.twitter%5D-%5Bheadline%5D-%5Bnews%5D-%5Bbizdev%5D-%5Bisapi%5D&amp;at_campaign=64&amp;at_custom3=%40BBCWorld&amp;at_medium=custom7&amp;at_custom2=twitter&amp;at_custom4=FE489064-7F57-11EB-BA25-A3E84744363C&amp;at_custom1=%5Bpost+type%5D\">statement<\/a> on Sunday, \u201cSwiss voters have once again approved an initiative that discriminates against one religious community in particular, needlessly fueling division and fear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Swiss government was reportedly also against the ban, and said that the state could not decide how women are allowed to dress.<\/p>\n<p>There are a few exceptions to the ban, namely that people can still cover their faces in locations of worship and \u201cother sacred sites.\u201d The face coverings will also be permitted if they need to be worn because of health and safety issues, reasons related to the weather, or when it is seen as \u201clocal custom,\u201d according to the proposal that was put forth by the Swiss federal government. There are reportedly no other exceptions, including no allowance for tourists.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-56314173?xtor=AL-72-%5Bpartner%5D-%5Bbbc.news.twitter%5D-%5Bheadline%5D-%5Bnews%5D-%5Bbizdev%5D-%5Bisapi%5D&amp;at_campaign=64&amp;at_custom3=%40BBCWorld&amp;at_medium=custom7&amp;at_custom2=twitter&amp;at_custom4=FE489064-7F57-11EB-BA25-A3E84744363C&amp;at_custom1=%5Bpost+type%5D\">BBC<\/a>, the proposal included in the referendum was focused on \u201cstopping violent street protesters from wearing masks.\u201d It was also put forth before the pandemic took hold and led to the requirement of mask-wearing in different situations. While the language in the document did not specifically include the topic of Islam, it has been referenced as \u201cthe burka ban.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/03\/07\/europe\/switzerland-referendum-face-covering-intl\/index.html\">CNN<\/a> reported that the two Swiss cantons of St. Gallen and Ticino \u201chave already introduced a ban on full facial coverings in the past, according to the Federal Government\u2019s website. In several other cantons full facial covering is currently only banned at protests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other countries in Europe have already enforced various forms of the ban, such as France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Denmark.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/03\/07\/europe\/switzerland-referendum-face-covering-intl\/index.html\">The Swiss Council of Religions<\/a>, which reportedly works on behalf of all the main religious communities in Switzerland, spoke out against the proposal, \u201cstressing that the human right to religious freedom also protects religious practices such as dress codes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2009, Swiss citizens voted in favor of another referendum with ties to Islam, banning the creation of minarets.
