Under Cover\u2019s leadership, the CLSC has expanded its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-grift-that-keeps-on-grifting\/\" title=\"The Grift That Keeps on Grifting\">pro bono work<\/a> using grants from the nonprofit, Equal Justice Wyoming Foundation (EJWF).<\/p>\n<p>The EJWF is part of <a href=\"https:\/\/equaljustice.wy.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Equal Justice Wyoming<\/a> (EJW), formerly the Wyoming Center for Legal Aid, a state-funded civil legal services program for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/pro-life-attorney-warns-of-californias-abortion-apocalypse-in-wave-of-new-legislation\/\" title=\"Pro-Life Attorney Warns of California\u2019s \u2018Abortion Apocalypse\u2019 in Wave of New Legislation\">low-income clients<\/a>. The Wyoming Supreme Court established EJW in 2011. EJW and\u2064 its grant-issuing arm, EJWF, are funded by revenues from increased \u2064court-filing fees, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/university-of-wyoming-law-students-offer-illegal-immigrants-free-help-with-obtaining-citizenship\/\" title=\"Wyoming law students aid undocumented immigrants in gaining citizenship for free.\">increased pro \u200dhac vice fees paid<\/a> by out-of-state attorneys, Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) funds, and Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) funds.<\/p>\n<p>CLSC\u200b received one EJW grant in 2019 for nearly $38,300, likely due to the EJW\u2019s \u2063self-reported years-long struggle to raise\u200c sufficient revenue for grants. However, the EJWF also issued over $155,000 in grants to the university for sponsored\u2062 legal services programming from 2016 to 2021 according to tax filings. For the 2023-24\u2063 grant cycle, EJWF and EJW have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.equaljusticewyomingfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/NOTICE_OF_REQUEST_FOR_PROPOSAL_FY2023-2024_FINAL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">issued<\/a> up to $1.8 million in grants.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside CLSC, the UW College of\u2063 Law Estate Planning Practicum participated, as well as two\u200c outside law firms: Traveling Immigration Attorney and\u200b Hirst-Applegate Immigrant Hope.<\/p>\n<p>Traveling Immigration Attorney is run by Nimsy Garcia, a UW College of Law alumna whose <a href=\"https:\/\/en.travelingimmigrationattorney.com\/sobre-m%C3%AD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">parents<\/a> were illegal immigrants. The other firm, Hirst-Applegate, first <a href=\"https:\/\/hirstapplegate.com\/hirst-applegate-adds-immigration-law-to-its-practice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">began<\/a> offering immigration law services last fall, well over a year into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/gop-lawmakers-condemn-biden-admin-over-border-crisis\/\" title=\"GOP lawmakers condemn Biden admin. over border crisis\">ongoing border crisis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Law student Ana Rodriguez came up with the idea to host the immigration clinic. Rodriguez <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyomingpublicmedia.org\/news\/2023-07-31\/a-day-of-free-workshops-will-help-community-members-with-immigration-questions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> Wyoming Public Media that the current justice system \u200bdoesn\u2019t work for all, namely minorities.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cMarginalized groups and people of color: the system\u2063 isn\u2019t built for them. The system is \u2063built to \u200doppress and marginalize them further and \u2064keep them out,\u201d said Rodriguez. \u201cAnd so I think that\u2019s a huge problem all throughout the country, but especially in Wyoming, with the lack of attorneys and\u200d the lack of resources.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Rodriguez worked as an immigration paralegal in Colorado in 2021 and previously volunteered as an American Immigration Council translator for \u2062detained\u2062 illegal immigrants, as\u200d well as a staffer for Casa\u200b de Paz Colorado, a halfway house for illegal immigrants leaving the Aurora, Colorado detention center.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/non-profit\/american-immigration-council\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Immigration Council<\/a> is a nonprofit organization that \u200dadvocates for granting automatic legal status to illegal immigrants. The \u200dnonprofit has worked closely with the Southern Poverty Law Center and \u2064receives\u2063 funding from major leftist dark money organizations such\u2063 as George Soros\u2019 Foundation to Promote Open Society and the Ford Foundation. Casa de Paz Colorado is\u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/app\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Detention-Watch-Network-2018-conference.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">affiliated<\/a> with the leftist immigration group, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/non-profit\/detention-watch-network\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Detention Watch Network<\/a>, which advocates for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casadepazcolorado.org\/resources\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abolishing<\/a> all \u2063immigration detention.<\/p>\n<p>According\u200c to \u2063Migration Policy Institute data, collected every \u206210 years, Wyoming\u2019s foreign-born immigrant population <a href=\"https:\/\/www.migrationpolicy.org\/data\/state-profiles\/state\/demographics\/WY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">doubled<\/a> from 1.7% in 1990 to 3.4% in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Wyoming doesn\u2019t have an immigration court. Denver, Colorado\u2019s immigration court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/eoir\/immigration-court-administrative-control-list#Denver\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">handles<\/a> Wyoming immigration cases. There are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/eoir\/immigration-court-administrative-control-list\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">70 immigration courts<\/a> across the remaining 28 states.<\/p>\n<p>The CLSC is planning to hold another clinic for illegal immigrants in late fall near an ICE Detention Center \u2063located in Casper, Wyoming. Although there were over 183,500 encounters last month, which is a decline from last July and July 2021, it is\u200b still over\u200c four times as many as July 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Customs and Border Protection (CBP)\u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbp.gov\/newsroom\/stats\/southwest-land-border-encounters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">updated<\/a> its southwest border encounters data on Friday.
