Saidinejad is also a member\u2062 of the AAP and \u200dACEP\u200d committees on pediatric emergency medicine.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThat is not who we are as ER physicians. We \u2062are not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/graphic-sexual-content-assigned-to-texas-students-dissenting-parents-harassed-with-anti-christiandks\/\" title=\"Graphic Sexual Content Assigned To Texas Students; Dissenting Parents Harassed With Anti-Christian\u2026\u2018D**ks\u2019\u00a0\">mental health professionals<\/a>.\u2064 We cannot provide definitive \u2063care,\u201d Saidinejad said.<\/p>\n<p>About half a million children\u2063 with mental or behavioral health problems show up at emergency\u2062 rooms\u2064 each year, according to \u2064the joint paper. That\u200d number was \u200calready rising before the pandemic, but the pandemic exacerbated the crisis, the physician groups said.<\/p>\n<p>One\u2063 issue emergency rooms encounter is that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/physician-groups-beg-for-help-with-emergency-rooms-flooded-by-children-in-psychiatric-crisis\/\" title=\"Physician groups plead for aid as ERs overwhelmed by kids in mental health crisis.\">pediatric mental health crises tend<\/a> to \u2062be very complex\u200c and require much longer hospital stays.\u2063 The average pediatric mental health stay is 17 hours compared to an average \u200bfive hours for all emergency room stays, according to the \u2063paper.<\/p>\n<p>The pediatric mental emergency visits also drain \u201cresources that would have been needed to run the normal medical operations of\u200d the ER, so that increases of length\u2064 of stay for the\u200d other patients as well,\u201d Saidinejad said.<\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/onelink.to\/dwapp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-describedby=\"sk-tooltip-9096\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/onelink.to\/dwapp&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1692551179799000&#038;usg=AOvVaw149wVUFucE7CWxRq9-A4I-\">CLICK HERE \u2064TO GET THE \u200bDAILYWIRE+ APP<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Another issue is that children \u200dwho arrive at \u200bemergency rooms in crisis are less likely to get\u200c the follow-up care they need if they \u2064only go to an emergency room rather than a psychiatric crisis center or community\u200c mental\u2062 health center, according to Saidinejad.<\/p>\n<p>The physician groups are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/emergency-room-doctors-beg-help-treating-children-mental-health-illnes-rcna99951\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">calling<\/a> for\u2064 several measures to address the crisis.<\/p>\n<h3>Measures to Address the \u2064Crisis<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Community-based teams that\u200b could respond to children in crisis at school, \u200cin doctors\u2019 offices, and even at their homes.<\/li>\n<li>Placing pediatric mental health professionals in\u200c emergency departments.<\/li>\n<li>Supporting emergency department staff with information \u200dabout high-risk children, such as abuse victims and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/watch-gary-sinise-launches-new-initiative-with-home-depot-founders\/\" title=\"WATCH: Gary Sinise Launches New Initiative With Home Depot Founders\">post-traumatic stress disorder<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The country\u2019s mental health system needs to be \u2062expanded \u200bas well, the paper\u2019s\u2064 authors \u2062said.<\/p>\n<p>There is only\u2063 one mental health professional for every 124,000\u200b children, and as many as 55% of all counties\u2064 do not have even one psychiatric professional, Saidinejad <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/Health_News\/2023\/08\/17\/emergency-rooms-mental-health-children\/1861692214123\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Telehealth\u2064 for children\u2019s mental health could also help in treating children before they land in the emergency room, the\u2064 authors said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe in \u2062the ER are basically a safety net. We can\u2019t say no to \u2063anything.
