But now, components that may \u2063include \u2063lithium-ion batteries, tires and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/us-imports-of-auto-parts-face-scrutiny-under-law-on-chinese-forced-labor\/\" title=\"US auto parts imports under scrutiny for Chinese forced labor.\">major\u200b automobile raw\u200c materials \u200daluminum<\/a> \u2064and \u200csteel are increasingly subject\u200c to detentions at the border.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>    \u2063Increased inspection of products \u2063destined for \u2062auto assembly plants by U.S. Customs and Border Protection \u2064(CBP) could signal difficult times ahead for automakers \u200dwho \u2062will need solid \u200dproof that their \u2062supply\u2063 chains are \u2062free of links to a region\u2064 where the U.S. believes Chinese authorities have\u200d established labor camps\u2062 for Uyghurs and\u2064 other \u2062Muslim minority groups.<\/p>\n<p>Beijing denies \u2063any abuses.<\/p>\n<p>    More \u2062than a \u200dyear of\u200d enforcement of the Uyghur\u200c Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA) has already \u2062stymied development of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/report-bidens-push-to-expand-solar-energy-risks-fueling-chinas-humanitarian-crisis\/\" title=\"Report: Biden\u2019s push to expand solar energy risks fueling China\u2019s humanitarian crisis\">solar energy projects<\/a>\u2064 as detained panel \u2064shipments languish in\u2064 U.S. warehouses. Installations of\u2063 large solar energy \u200dfacilities for\u2064 utilities dropped 31% last year due to constrained panel \u2064supplies,\u200d according\u200b to the \u2062U.S. Solar Energy Industries Association \u2062trade group, \u2063which has\u200c said conditions have improved somewhat this year.<\/p>\n<p>    Both solar energy and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nissan-expects-38-full-year-profit-rise-on-stronger-sales-outlook\/\" title=\"Nissan predicts a 38% increase in annual profits due to improved sales prospects.\">battery-powered electric vehicles<\/a> are critical industries in the Biden administration\u2019s push\u200c to wean the U.S. from dependence on fossil fuels and \u200bto combat climate change.<\/p>\n<p>    \u200b When shipments \u2062are detained, CBP provides the\u200b importer with a\u2063 list of examples of products from previous reviews and \u200cthe\u2062 kind of documentation\u200b required to prove they\u2063 are not made with forced labor, CBP told Reuters. <\/p>\n<p>    That document, a recent version of which was obtained by Reuters through a public \u2062records request, \u2063was updated between April and June \u2063of this year to include batteries, tires, \u200caluminum and steel, a CBP spokesperson said. \u2063When the law was beginning to be enforced \u200blast year, the agency was primarily \u200bfocused\u2063 on the three commodities identified as\u200c high \u200cpriorities in the UFLPA statute: cotton, tomatoes and polysilicon, the raw material used\u2062 in solar panels.\u200b <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe timing of \u2063these changes does not reflect any specific changes\u200d in strategy or operations,\u201d a \u2063CBP spokesperson said in a statement, adding that the \u2064list of eight product types was \u201cnot exhaustive.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>    The\u2064 agency did not \u2064specifically\u200b respond to \u2063questions about \u2063increased \u200bscrutiny of automotive imports.\u200b It\u2063 said its focus \u201cis where there\u200c are \u2064high risks in U.S. supply chains.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>    In a \u200creport to Congress last month\u200b on UFLPA enforcement, CBP listed lithium-ion batteries, tires, \u201cand other automobile components\u201d among the \u201cpotential risk areas\u201d\u2062 it was monitoring.<\/p>\n<p>    The \u2062expanded\u200b focus is reflected in CBP \u2062data, which shows 31 automotive and\u2063 aerospace\u200b shipments have \u200dbeen\u200d detained under\u2062 UFLPA since February of this year. Detentions \u200cof base\u2064 metal shipments, which would include aluminum and steel, have also soared from about $1 million per month \u200bat the end of \u20632022 to more than $15 \u2062million\u2062 a month.<\/p>\n<p>CBP\u200b said it was\u200d not able to disclose \u200cadditional\u200c information related to enforcement activities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>AUTOMAKER EXPOSURE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Though the automotive detentions are small compared with the\u2063 more than $1 billion of solar\u200b panel imports \u2062that have stalled at the border, they \u2064have put the industry on alert, according to\u200d attorneys and supply-chain experts.<\/p>\n<p>    \u200c\u201cIt\u2019s a very complex supply\u200c chain and obviously a detention would be \u200dincredibly \u2063disruptive to an auto \u2062company,\u201d\u2062 said\u2064 Dan\u2062 Solomon, an attorney with Miller &#038; Chevalier who \u200dadvises manufacturers on potential forced-labor \u2062risks.<\/p>\n<p>    In May, Solomon spoke\u200d about UFLPA compliance at a private event for automotive\u2062 executives in Detroit.<\/p>\n<p>    \u201cWithout a doubt the\u2062 manufacturers are\u200d focused on it,\u201d he \u200dsaid.<\/p>\n<p>    \u200c The stepped-up\u200d focus on automakers follows a \u2063study by Britain\u2019s Sheffield \u200bHallam University\u2064 published in \u200cDecember that said \u2064nearly every major automaker has exposure to products made \u2064with forced labor in Xinjiang.<\/p>\n<p>    The report prompted a probe by U.S. Senate Finance Committee Chair Ron Wyden, \u200dwhich his spokesperson said is ongoing.<\/p>\n<p>    \u201cIt is appropriate for CBP to scrutinize imports in this space,\u201d\u2064 Wyden said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018REAL PERIL\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Of the 13 automakers and suppliers contacted by Reuters, four \u2013 Mercedes-Benz\u2063 USA, Volkswagen, Denso, Continental AG and ZF Friedrichshafen AG \u2013 said they had not \u2062had products detained under UFLPA.<\/p>\n<p>    \u201cUnder the UFLPA,\u200d we\u2019ve further increased\u200d our due diligence with global media \u200bscreening, risk analysis and \u2064supplier and buyer training on sustainability and human \u2063rights,\u201d\u2062 a \u200cVolkswagen spokesperson said in\u200b an \u2062email.<\/p>\n<p>A Continental spokesperson said by email the company \u201cis committed to human rights\u200b and respects and \u200bactively fosters those \u2063rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ford, Bosch, General Motors, \u2064Honda, \u200dToyota, Stellantis and Magna said \u2062in written statements that \u2062they were committed \u2063to ensuring their\u2064 supply chains were free of forced labor but did not respond to questions about detainments under UFLPA.<\/p>\n<p>Tesla\u2062 did not \u2064respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p>    The chief\u200c executive of\u2063 Exiger, a\u200d provider\u2063 of supply-chain management software,\u200d said the solar detentions are an indication of where auto component enforcement may be headed. <\/p>\n<p>    \u200b\u201cIf you\u2019re a car manufacturer and you have not started mapping your supply chains for the critical minerals and the \u2062parts \u2064of the sub-assemblies\u200c that are \u2062going through China and \u2063where they are getting their goods from, you are running a real peril as we\u200d go into the\u200c back half of the\u200b year,\u201d\u200b Exiger CEO Brandon Daniels said in \u2064an interview.<\/p>\n<p>  (Reporting by Nichola Groom in Los \u2063AngelesAdditional reporting by David \u2063Shepardson in Washington, Jan Schwartz in Hamburg and Daniel Leussink in TokyoEditing by Matthew Lewis)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oann.com\/uncategorized\/us-imports-of-auto\/attachment\/file-photo-u-s-treasury-secretary-janet-yellen-visits-china-2\/\"><\/a><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p><strong>Trump picks \u200bTucker over Fox, Elon blocks\u200b the block button and Rich Men North of\u2064 Richmond continues to dominate<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p><strong>One America\u2019s Jessamyn Dodd sits down \u2063with California Senate \u2064candidate Eric\u200d Early \u2062to discuss the rising\u200d crime in the \u200bstate.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p><strong>Prosecutors announce a major \u200dbreak in the \u200bmurder of\u200c Microsoft executive Jared\u200c Bridegan.
